MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — A Madison family is pleading for help for their 16-month-old baby girl. Charlotte Dalton has seizures almost daily, some lasting almost an hour. Now, her parents are trying to find a remedy that will help keep her calm, without the side effects of strong medication.
Baby Charlotte has been given Valium and Ativan, medications that have lasting and dangerous side effects. Her mother, Gena Dalton, is asking lawmakers to help them by passing a bill legalizing an oil from the cannabis plant. She believes it could be the answer to their prayers.
“My mouth just fell open when I’m hearing the amounts of Valium they pumped in her, when that wasn’t working and she’s still seizing 30 minutes later they start giving her Ativan, and for days she was just kind out of it, listless. It was heartbreaking,” said Dalton.
Dalton said Charlotte began having seizures when she was just a few months old. She was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a genetic disorder.
Right now, Charlotte’s ”rescue drugs” may be doing more harm than help.
“The side effects are horrendous,” said Dalton. “Some of the side effects — you have to monitor liver function or kidney function because the risk of organ failure is extremely high.”
Dalton is asking legislators to legalize oil from the cannabis plant so Charlotte can have a shot at a safer treatment for her seizures. The oil has extremely low levels of THC and no psychoactive effects. It’s just derived from the marijuana plant.
“There are families in Colorado who have children with similar epileptic seizures that are having great success with this medication and these are families that literally had no other hope,” said Dalton.
Dalton thinks the oil could be Charlotte’s saving grace.
“People in the general population might go, ‘you would really consider giving that to your child?’” she said. “But considering what we’re giving her now, the side effects are way less, there’s no addictive properties to it unlike Valium and Ativan, which are highly addictive.”
She said she’ll do whatever it takes.
“We don’t want to leave, but if it comes down to getting what we need for our daughter, we’ll move to Colorado, but we don’t want that,” she said.
She’s putting her faith in the hands of Alabama lawmakers like Rep. Mike Ball. Ball is working on a rough draft of a bill that will allow the cannabis oil, without legalizing medical marijuana.
“We hope this legislation gets passed, so we can be free from prosecution, we can try this out for our child, and hopefully it’ll work,” said Dalton.

I sympathize with the family, but that being said, I honestly believe that it doesn't matter one rat's ass what some mother thinks about the natural herbs that grow from the earth that we all share.
They should all be legal - a no-brainer - because the earth makes them.
Also because these bodies of ours are OURS, so it is up to us to decide what to put into them.
However, because the anti- drug zealots are always saying "think of the children", it may be that this is exactly the type of barely scientific, emotional argument needed to counter that.

How is the prohibition of treatment for this child, with a medication that shows great promise and little danger, is not an infringement of her rights, screams, in a just and rational mind, that there needs to be another amendment to the bill pf rights. Maybe we can get that done when we repeal the "patriot act" and take back all the rights it negated. On a side note when I looked back on the Bill of Rights I was kinda struck at the last amendment..

AMENDMENT XXVII
Originally proposed Sept. 25, 1789. Ratified May 7, 1992.

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of representatives shall have intervened.

WOW... I'm glad that they added this as it seems like such a paramount thing to protect. Little girls are prohibited the use of possibly life changing malediction, that have received positive conclusions from being tested on humans since biblical times, because of the lingering belief of decades worth of propaganda and lies, but worry not America the paycheck levels of the assclowns running this show are guaranteed.

An amendment to the Constitution needs a two thirds majority in both houses of Congress, then it needs to be ratified by 38 of the 50 states. In the current political climate, there's no way in hell that both houses and three fourths of the states will agree to anything of substance, especially something as politicized as drug laws.

Somehow we got to 27 amendments, but that was before we were so polarized (i.e. before Obama). Hell, government functioned better even during the Civil War!

Look, this country is seriously screwed. And we need the motherfuckers to stop arguing and start governing. Like look: their favorite word is jobs. Jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs. "Mister President, the American people need jobs." You hear that every single fucking day from members of Congress. But we don't even have a national employment service for regular people! Seriously, if right now I need help getting a job, the government will do exactly SQUAT for me. So what the fuck are they talking about?

If this was a little over 100 years ago shed prob get a cannabis tincture, there were no benzos or barbs...maybe everyone will start moving to wa and co then the gov will realize ppl could care less about laws and more about the care of their families...who wouldve thought that right??

edited for length

Executive order could stop DEA from going after cannabis users, DEA is executive branch. It is also an important medical and civil rights issue... Obama could justify ending marijuana prohibition and use "necessary and proper clause."

After that the whole scheduling system could be overhauled. No need for an amendment now. Put off that battle until the political climate changes.

In my state, we have families leaving for Colorado with their children with seizure disorders. We're attempting to implement a safety net clause in our bill so that if passes, these families will have a grace period where they won't face prosecution if they return to the state with their children and their children's medicine. Basically, a prescription in another state would give a family 30-90 days to register in mine.
