Police in Denver are using a nose telescope to tackle unacceptable odours from the recreational use of marijuana

As more cities in America legalise the drug, attention has switched to the pungent smell that wafts from the joint itself.

Denver has passed a new “odour ordinance” with a potential $2,000 (£1,247) fine for anyone found guilty of polluting the atmosphere.

The need to draw up standards emerged because of the confusion over the legal position of whether somebody smoking marijuana in their own home could be committing an environmental offence when the smell seeps into the street.

Under the new law an offence is committed if the odour is detectable when the smoke is mixed with seven times the volume of clean air.

The nose telescope – also known as an olfactometer – is the device used to measure the concentration of cannabis in the air.

Is the smell of weed burning really worse than tobacco? How can we know? Who decides?
Should tobacco users also be subject to fines? Is this due to anti-cannabis feelings that never left after Harry Ainslinger stoked them up almost a century ago?
Should the government really be spending time and money on measuring the concentration of cannabis smoke smell in the air, or instead get to work on those 5000 rape cases that are backlogged due to lack of time and money?

That makes no sense to me either... just no sense at all.
 
Another attempt to harass and abuse a harmless subculture. They ignore the fact that second hand tobacco smokes kills while second-hand weed smoke is on-par with city air in terms of harm. This is just a money-making scam for the police meant to appease the decrepit conservative voting block.
 
I would love to see the uproar if they used this thing in certain areas dominated by cultures with really smelly cuisine. I can smell my neighbours food a block away. Not that I would complain, nor would he complain about my garage leaking out weed smoke. There is a food rendering plant nearby that out stinks everyone anyway.
It would be the height of absurdity to be able to buy weed legally then go home and have to smoke it in the bathroom with the shower running while you blow it into the fan with a towel under the door like we did in the dorm room in university.

You know we had to initiate, gather the signatures, get the legislation on the ballot, and have it passed by the voting public to amend the constitution of Colorado in order to get you archaic laws which were based on propaganda and lies to be changed. This is just further evidence that you have lost touch with your duties to protect and serve the people of Colorado and have become an eyesore which is openly harassing and financially exploiting the people instead. Wonder what real cops who work homicide and bank robbery secretly think of your clownish shenanigans? They most shake their heads in shame at being associated with you crazy people. You actions just seem like a pathetic attempt to find something else to justify your man hours is I guess people get desperate when they are still trying to fight a battle that they lost.

This is obviously a huge problem.. complaints have doubled since last year for a whopping total of 16.. lol.. get a real job!!!!!

This is nothing more then a way cops in DENVER are trying to fuck over weed smokers.. Seriously a 2,000 dollar fine?!? wtf? They just want to take peoples money and fuck them over for NOTHING AT ALL! How do you guys not see this as total tyranical and un-ethical behavior by the gov't/cops?!?!? holy shit!!!!!!!! i can't be on this forum anymore i get too worked up and start getting too mad everytime i read this damn Drugs in the Media forum
 
What a joke, if one wanted to argue cannabis smoke was polluting the air then why do you need a fucking "nose telescope" to be able to sniff it out? If it is so offensive I really don't think that technology would be necessary. This is really just an outlandish tax on cannabis smokers, not that I would support this shit for tobacco but which has been proven to cause more harm as second hand smoke? As far as I am aware it would be tobacco.
