Two undercover Essex County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a suspected drug dealer Wednesday, sparking an angry response from area residents. The dead man, so far identified only as "Jose," becomes the 35th person to die in US domestic drug law enforcement operations so far this year.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, citing Essex County Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose, the deputies were doing a drug investigation and approached "Jose" in a building on North 9th Street. Ambrose said the man came out of the building with a loaded weapon, and both deputies opened fire, killing him.

Neighbors at the scene, who pelted the sheriff's office vehicle with rocks and debris, breaking at least one window, had a different version of events. Several of them told a Star-Ledger reporter that the deputies hit the man with their vehicle, then shot him as he lay on the ground. None of those interviewed would give their names, saying they feared retribution from the police.

"Why did you have to hit him with a car? Why'd you have to shoot him in the back?" people shouted over Ambrose as he spoke to reporters.

One neighbor who did identify himself, Jamar Smith, said he was a friend of the dead man and was on his way to his house when he heard the sound of a car crash followed by the loud bang of two gun shots. Smith and several others said one of the officers involved is well-known in the neighborhood for his aggressive policing and that they had had violent encounters with him, too.

^you would really think that would be the case right? But everyone knows what happens when you give someone power over someone, they abuse it. I was hoping to see they actually hit the cops but rising up and thowing rocks aint bad. Sell drugs =get shot by the police. My old guys car got shot once while he inside somewhere and the cops were chasing "an armed" suspec (assuming he had two arms) and they fired at the guy, happening to hit dudes windshield. You can bet it was never fixed and probably not had been reported. Struck the metal right where it meets the windshield, wouldnt have hit him but would have been scary as shit. The city cops here carry glocks in 40s&w with bonded hollow points. One center mass shot at the usual distance of a handgun shooting (few feet) is practically always lethal with those rounds. Im sure le everywhere carry similar tech hollow points but maybe sigs or smith and wesson...either way i wouldnt want to get shot with a .22 let alone a bullet that expands with razor sharp petals the diameter of a nickel larger rounds can expand to the size of a quarter.

I used to hate cops when I was a teenager, then as I got older I sort of figured that hell they're just people too... Some good, some bad. But unfortunately with all this latest shit I'm starting to revert to my old views. Welcome to the police state America, although it's hardly new. Just getting worse and worse.

Some many examples of how horrible police really are lately. Why as a community would we let any of these recent events continue to happen. And they will continue to happen until we stand up to the bull shit government we have in place.

38 lives lost to sensless violence that its practiacally created by our gonvernment. They are kiling there own citezens and violating our rights in disgusting ways for drugs when I should be able to freely decide what to put in my body.

over the past six months (and in reading this subforum daily) my faith in the american "justice" system has sadly been dwindling.

ill read one story "marijuana reform in **** state" that brings hope and freedom to the people; but is soon followed by dozens of others that speak in volumes about america fast paced becoming a police state, where human violation is heavily outweighing human rights and any forms of justice (police brutality, sexual violation on basis of drug suspicion, murder by police without legitimate and factual cause, the current health care issue etc).

the only thing about this article that made me smile was the revolt of the civilians in the neighborhood whom felt so passionately about the issue that they fought the law and exposed the truth. i hope that in this becoming a media issue, someone will have to be held accountable for this tragedy and senseless loss of life.

...kytnism...:|

Fuck... those are two VERY different stories. It's scary how mainstream audiences are completely oblivious to the kinds of psychopathic power abuses happening.

It's like... want to molest children? Become a priest. Want to abuse and kill people while getting away with it? Become a cop.

Why are police "above the law" .. it seems to me that they should be held to an even higher standard than the public instead of just being allowed to seemingly murder people all the time.

Wow I know right, I fucking hate this shit. A drug person vs a cop, just two people trying to do what they 'think' is right. If the druggie kills the cop, he is sent to prison for life, maybe executed. If the cop kills the druggie he gets a gold star and his name in the paper..... fucking sick

I feel like a lot of cops wanted to become a cop in the first place because of years of playing violent killing video games and they wanted to reenact it in real life.

My sister in law has her double masters in criminology and psychology. Apparently it's not a widely advertised fact that the police force and military attract a highly disproportionate number of borderline people. It's partially because of the personality testing process. They look for candidates with intelligence yet relatively inflexible personalities so that adherence to rules is more assured. Unfortunately, borderline people tend to fit the bill for this as well.

That plus the blue code of silence creates major power imbalances in enforcement and internal reporting.

Already is I'm afraid.

This thread made me think of this song by Fear Factory...

Invade and encompass to judge and dissect
Witness and persecute to serve and protect
To serve, and protect to serve
To serve, and protect to serve

Watchful and aware, contrain every movement
Admit the consequences, freedom's an illusion

Where is security governed through scrutiny?
Your privacy denied, organized and confined!
No place to hide!
No place to hide!

There is no place to hide
Plugged in your mind
Conformed design

To concede your rights
Concede your mind
Surrender to authority

"All must abide and all must adhere"
Future oppression becoming more clear
This is a warning so you must take heed
This coming vision is reality

Where is security governed through scrutiny?
Your privacy denied, organized and confined!
No place to hide
No place to hide...

the use of undercover officers should be severely restricted imho

cops should be required to be in uniform, and to identify themselves very clearly when serving warrants. if some random non-uniformed people break into your house, why wouldn't you attack them?

If I was a cop I would be very concerned how I treat people on a day to day basis. If we ever have a major drought where foodstuff becomes scarce and even bread, high priced and people hit the streets in numbers to acquire food. And until the Army is involved they will be the front line. Now a major city might have 5-10 thousand cops but the number of guns in those cities might be in the hundred thousands. I would want to be the good cop even though that might not help, neither will body armor when that amount of bullets fly.

American justice? What's that?...

Our justice system is & has been a joke, for a very long time. & to be perfectly honest, unless something drastic happens, it's never going to change. Until we the people stand up and demand/force something to change... It's all going to be the same shit, over and over again. It's sad, really...

I was going to say something similar to this. I read the article twice, just to make sure I wasn't missing something...

& no where in that article, does it state that the two undercover officers identified themselves as such when approaching the guy. & odds are, they had their guns drawn while walking towards him, and without identifying who they were, and with no visible badges or anything... I don't blame the guy for coming back at them with a loaded gun. But unlike the cops, he didn't come out shooting. He probably thought it was just two thugs coming to rob him or something.

...Wait, I guess the police are armed thugs coming to rob folks. Fuck. But you know what I mean.

They're the reason he's dead, for reasons other then them physically pulling the trigger. They approached him unannounced. If they would have identified themselves, I'd put money on betting that the outcome would have been completely different. He might not have fully complied, he might have kept his mouth shut and went to jail, but at least he'd still be alive. Like Kytnism said, it made me smile to see people lash out at the police for their wrong-doings. I just wish it would happen more often, because the more we stand up, the less (hopefully) this shit would happen. & I also wish someone would have recorded the whole thing going down.

Why? Because we don't have the facts of what really happened, other then there was a casualty. Because we have two separate stories; we have the polices version, and then we have the story that the neighbors witnessed. So it's a he said/she said story, where someones life was ended.

...fuck the police.

Police look for drugs from Jose in the ghetto, but never Chip in the Suburbs. I don't know the layout of Newark or anything, but if there is a nice affluent part this wont be it, it never is.

Some cops are good some cops are bad. It is the agenda they are meant to uphold that makes them all seem bad. They are scared. They know that people mistrust and dislike them. They want to come home safe to their families as well. I guess it all goes back to the saying "when slaying monsters be careful not to become one."

Many are monsters....with the ability to bring dire manipulations into ones life.
