amitryptline overdose?

Hey everyone...i'm new to the site so I apologize in advance if i'm not to thorough or if I break any rules.
So I recently watched my mother in law o.d on amitryptline. She was going crazy. Auditory hallucinations..visual hallucinations. What is this drug? And why does it do that? is there anyway to stop the hallucinations and calm them down? Any info at all will help.

Anyways, to answer your question, It is a tricyclic anti-depressant mainly used for pain associated with depression. I guess it would be possible to overdose on, but it is really sedating and would cause one respriatory depression and a bunch of sleep. Never really heard of anyone hallucinating from amitryptiline, unless it just doesn't mix well with their body, or if they were really on other drugs you did not know about.

Apparently death from amitryptaline overdose is one of the most terrifying, excruciatingly painful experiences one can endure. People OD as a cry for help only to suffer extreme pain.

If you're going to OD on a drug in order to express your emotional pain, at least do it with one that won't cause serious heart problems and kill you. At least with something like paracetamol (acetominophen), as long as you get medical attention straight away they can in most cases give an antidote and prevent any significant liver damage, but with tricyclic antidepressants you're fucked if you take over a certain amount.

To answer your question, it's an older antidepressant that has fallen out mainstream use in favor of the safer more modern SSRIs.

My mums also on this for acute anxiety (benzos are rarely prescribed now), and it's really good for that; I.also sometimes use it as a sleep aid. You said "overdose"-how many pills exactly are we talking about here? Cause if she took a massive overdose, maybe it would be a good idea to seek proffesional medical treatment....

If someone is ODing on amitriptyline get them to a hospital ASAP! Tricyclic anti-depressants especially amitriptyline are one of the most dangerous drugs to OD on. They cause cardiac problems in OD that can kill you weeks after the OD has already been treated. Amitriptyline is particularly cardiotoxic so the sooner you get to the ER the better.

Hey I used google and didn't really find anything that answered my question..well it did say it was a tricyclic but not much other info was given. But thanks for the input its appreciated.

I overdosed on Trazadone at age 19 and even a day later when they finally got me to wake up and speak in the hospital after slapping fuck out of me every 2 hours and making me drink orange juice cos my blood sugar was dangerously low, even though I was sobered up (a good bit anyway) , I had to stay in with a heart monitor on because there's something about the drug, the DR told me my heart was probably going to stop beating in the next 12 hours, I didn't want to fall asleep but couldn't help it because obv I was full of sleeping pills,

Luckily I woke up, and the Dr's kept going on about how Trazadone and Amitriptyline are hardly prescribed these days because of this sort of thing.

As my first post I am going to share a story.
I had an accidental overdose of amytriptyline about a year ago, I was very medicated for legitimate reasons and I was just in such a fog I kept taking more and then forgetting.
I woke up in ICU on a ventilator with a feeding tube up my nose.
I am so lucky to be alive today, so please, be very careful with these tri-cyclic antidepressants, they can cause severe heart problems up to days after you're out of the hospital from an overdose.
And as Artificial Emotion said, I cannot describe the pain and discomfort I felt before passing out.

Thanks everyone for your advice and experiences. I didn't end up taking my mother in law to the hospital she slept it off and woke up fine. But I'll definatly be
considering taking her next time she does that..thanks again..

Glad to hear your moms ok . You should get her to go to a doctor as soon as possible to get her heart checked out as even mild OD's on certain tricyclics can cause cardiac damage.

Am i like the only person here that get's a good reaction from tricyclics? I find amitriptyline to be far better for neuropathic pain then shitty gabapentin and Lyrica and amitriptyline and it has been only 1 of 2 anti-depressants that have helped my bipolar depression the other being bupropion. It also kicks ass as a sleep aid and is far better then seroquel that's for sure.

I find it keeps me awake, but for a good year I was taking amytriptyline for nerve pain and it helped to an extend. Gabapentin make me so sick I had to stop taking it after losing 15 pounds. Lyrics does absolutely nothing, I think it's garbage.
