COLOMBIAN police say they have arrested a Toronto woman who simulated pregnancy to try to smuggle cocaine.

Colonel Esteban Arias says 28-year-old Tabitha Leah Ritchie was stopped while trying to board an Air Canada flight in Bogota after an inspector noted that her belly was unusually cold and hard.

He says police discovered a false belly made of latex taped to her body and they found 2 kilograms of cocaine.

Police say Ms Ritchie arrived in Colombia on August 6 and he identified her as a social worker.

The Canadian Embassy did not respond to requests for details.

Colombian officials say 874 foreigners are held in the country's lockups, most on drug charges.

I think I've read about one of these stories before; only the one I read before involved a woman sneaking over 100k rolls over the canadian border in a fake baby suit.

Yeah, I recall at least one other attempt at smuggling this way, who knows how many have got away with it tho..

Pretty convincing I guess, apart from the fact she was flying out of Colombia, and it had been done many times before. oh and it was rock hard, and cold.

And in another article it said she was asked about her baby by a customs official or something and got really defensive and agro, or something like that.

would hot water bottles and or heat packs placed between the latex and drugs affect the quality of the drugs? and wouldnt mandatory xray screening have revealed the contents below the prosthetic regardlessly?

hypothetically, i cant help but contemplate/question if she may have had better chances of escaping the law by having a stroller mattress filled with the substance and a newborn baby resting inside (eliminating the body heat issue) and also who is then accountable for the possession of illicit substance (as a minor to that degree cannot be apprehended) and if it is also possible to claim negligence on the nature that the stroller was purchased and used while on vacation to cater for the needs of your infant during transit?

With all the media press about the girls flying out of Peru, foreigners were already being heavily searched and singled out.. this just made it even worse. Not a chance I would be convinced to fly out of any of them countries currently with anything like that on me.

man this is exactly like all those stories on "locked up abroad"

been watching it on netflix. hilarious. these cartel motherfuckers get these idiot prissy white girls to carry insane amounts of dope and coke across borders for like a hundred bucks or something.

"hey mamacita, you wanna go on a paid vacation to colombia for a few weeks? nice hotel, you stay. then maybe you bring back small package for my friend, okay?"

white girls are so goddamn dumb. and they get caught like every time, at least according to that TV show. makes me ashamed to be white.

If they were caught every time, it would not be worth risking more.

Apparently, some of the flights on the big coke routes are up to 60% smugglers, sometimes more.

It just seems like bad business moving product using such a risky method. Now, Pablo Escobar, he had the right idea; he constantly changed his methods and came up with some genius ways to move coke: he liquidized it, dyed it red, and filled wine bottles with it, for example.

And now all those methods are known about and sometimes get caught too, it's often in the customs news sites. Back then customs and border security and airports and docks were a bit more corrupt, so larger imports were able to make it in more I think too, so more and more mules were or are probably getting used to bring smaller amounts through en masse.

One of Australias largest ecstasy busts (if not the largest importation bust) was in large tins of peeled tomatoes -
