Ayahuasca Milkshake/Smoothie - Theory behind Nausea Reduction

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know the theory behind how the Ayahuasca Milkshake Tek reduces nausea??

I haven't tried it yet myself, but interested to hear from those who have.

My limited understanding was that the tannins would still be present if the root bark is simply blended.

Thanks in advance for you help!

I thought the nausea came from the huge dose of DMT interacting with your intestines, not any phytochemicals in the plant, per se. Nausea happens even with pharmahuasca, doesn't it?

Yeah you vomit your guts up even with moclobemide and oral DMT. It's nothing to do with tannins - that's just a figment of peoples imaginations. The nausea hits almost simultaneously when the DMT hits your system, very intense stimulation of the nausea receptors.

But it does vary with the persons sensitivity - some people don't get any nausea, some throw their guts up.

The best answer I ever found was "essence of lemon oil" which apparantly deactivates some nausea receptors. There's also a small chance that dissolving your DMT in coca-cola helps because it forms the less nauseating salt DMT phosphate but I always found that worked only intermittently.

There are actually 2 nauseas on Ayahuasca. And I talk from extensive experience both with traditional and home made brews and also pharmahuasca. Ayahuasca even without any DMT can make you puke. Its a revolting beverage and the tannins are probably the culprit. Interestingly, my own brews with harmala were worse than the traditional brew with caapi. As a side note the traditional beverage (not made by me) is much more benign to my bowels and the sickness one feels fades away in a matter of minutes

That said, pharmahuasca also produces nausea as has been said. And definitely DMT is probably the cause. Yet, in my experience, that nausea is much more light, manifests later during the trip, and slowly goes away. Differently from Aya, after one takes pharmahuasca, one feels fine, but 15-20 minutes after the intake the nausea starts.

One other thing that I cannot quite explain although this has been confirmed by many people and it is definitely not placebo. Freebase DMT is MUCH more nausea prone than salted DMT

In my case, I cannot stand the taste of my own beverages, but I can handle well some pharma (moclobemide + DMT salted). The nausea is quite mild and bearable

Ginger fools. Ginger snaps blended into the milkshake would add flavor and thickness I bet. But ginger root is more potent unless you have organic cookies. Also, the lemon oil works well for nausea whenever, and so does peppermint oil. Essential oils of these types can be applied to your stomach directly, as well as on your wrists and behind your ears in order to preempt the nausea, if you don't have the cooking blends.

On another note, does changa hit bad nausea for you guys?
And does anyone know any herbs that are naturally anti-nausea? Preferably one that's also an MAOI? Lol.

Don't overdo the lemon oil if you're ingesting it, I've found that it can add a weird and unpleasant edginess to the trip. 1-2 drops diluted in a glass of water should be enough. (I've seen advice elsewhere that recommends up to 10 drops, that's why I'm mentioning this)

I've heard several reports that adding 3 seeds of Datura are good at preventing nausea, and have been used in Ayahuasca ceremonies, and Datura itself has been used in small dosages in several Aya traditional recipes. This said, please note that datura seeds are known deliriants, and people have died from eating them. Although 3 seeds should be a safe dosage (they are tiny), everyone reacts differently.

The anti nausea effect is most probably caused by the scopolamine (an anticholinergic) present in the seeds.

If you can get you're hands on buscopan it would be better than datura.
It's butylscopolamine, and the butyl group prevents it from crossing the blood brain barrier

Is that for any rational reason tho? I didn't think the native indians who used ayahuasca were concerned about vomiting or shitting because they think that's part of the experience. Plus they believe that violent shitting and vomiting helps if you are riddled with worms like most of them are.

Hi Ismene

Both my statements are not related. I know that several people were using datura (the 3 seeds) for nausea reduction. Also, and unrelated, I remarked that traditional beverages occasionally used datura (leaves, I would assume) as an "add on", so it was not unheard. See here, for example.

and finally, vomiting or shitting is not part of the experience :) I mean, if you puke it is OK, and it is understandable, but it is better if you do not! I've been in many traditional ceremonies (Santo Daime) and only the "rookies" puke! I actually never did vomit with the Daime, and I had almost "heroic" Ayahuasca dosages!

Yeah but I'm just wondering if they're adding the datura as an aid to reducing nausea or because the witch in the neighbouring village said it cures you of tapeworm or something. They arn't using ayahuasca solely to trip are they - often the DMT content in shamanic brews is barely present. They're taking it as some religious event - like you get christians who collapse when the preacher taps them on the shoulder and says "You're healed son!".
