Since British doctors refuse to prescribe anything to help you sleep "because they are addictive" that forces the dseperate insomniac to find his own OTC sleep aids IMO. I believe it has been established that the Z drugs are indeed addictive and should therefor be avoided, or only taken for short periods. As they seem to have a cross tolerance for benzos they are uselesas for me anyway as i have blown out my tolerance theshold for the hypnotic effects of benzos by massive and extended over indulgence.

I occasionally add a pregabalin on top of a selection of anti histamines as that makes a big difference, but again im very careful with pregabalin, which can also be physically addictive. See I have learnt my lesson about addictive drugs and do not want to be picking up any new ones ?

First of all are any-histamines addictive ? (i think not)
At what level of dose do they become dangerous ?

Last night i took 2 phenergans, 2 Hydroxyzine hydrochlorides, 1 mirtazapine, and 1 pregabalin. I also waited until i was actually feeling tired and sleepy (5am). I slept until 5pm though i did wake up 2 or 3 times during the night craving either chocolate bars, a hit on thr bong, or a smoke (nicotine)

Looking back now that lot was ridicululously overkill. Ive just discovered to my joy that i do infact have a brand new packet of 56 phenergans, so tonight i will probably take 1 or 2 phenergan, 1 or 2 hydroxyzines, 1 mirtaz. I think i can afford to vut out the pregabalin. I didnt need that old faithfull, and he can be saved for other occasions. (i will take a total of 3 anti histamines and my mirtazapine). I think that should be about right.

Can we build up a list of safe anti histamines that can be obtained easily off the internet ?

I seem to be able to tolerate a mixture of 6 different pills, but i was knocked out for 12 hours so i dare say my dosing was execcive.

Ill start the ball rolling with

phenergan
hydroxyzine
promethazine (i dont think i ever used it for sleep - is it effective ?, i just bought it to mix with codeine)Diphenhydramine

any more for any more ?? Do we need any more different ones ? Do people build up tolerances to indicvidual ones or a cross tolerance to the whole class of druyg ? Tolerance issues are the main reason im interested in acquiring an extensive selection, so i can keep them histamines on constant rotate; with a different one for ever one of the night. Im just joking now and being silly. As someone else said I do love having a bathroom cabinet that looks like a pharmacists. Sadly my cabinet isnt big enough to hold all my totally legal pharms.....I guess really ive already got more than enough, but im always interested in lkearning about new ones. Some are much more expensive than others for example.

What about Gravol/Dimehydrinate for example, which i also ordered ? I belive someone said these were mixed with another ingredient to prevent drowsiness which makes them useless for my purpose.

The word addictive can mean different things. I occasionally take the antihistamine diphenhydramine for sleep. I don't think it's compulsively addictive, and you might say it doesn't have withdrawal symptoms like benzos... but if you count insomnia as a withdrawal symptom then you might well say it does. It builds a fairly rapid tolerance followed by a dependence on it to get to sleep and insomnia if you stop using it.

Valerian/hops (e.g. "kalms sleep")an work but they're nothing like as potent as benzos or even diphenhydramine. I don't know if tolerance develops, they are so "lightweight" that the tolerance would probably be lightweight too.

I doubt you will get any benefit from doing them in truth.

I have had bad insomnia and tried using them(Nytol is basically an anti-histamine), they do not work and if they do then you are NOT a true insomniac. :)

Sominex which is promethazine is OK. But when I get bad insomnia it does fuck all. And if it does work it only lasts three days the the very most.

You could just end up very drowsy which I actually quite enjoy, especially with a beer or two :D

I feel for you! Remember when I had real bad insomnia couple of years ago, not nice. Due to getting off bupe and Valium, but with time it got much better.

Hope it improves soon! <3

Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (boots over the counter as Sleepeaze). Yeah if you have been up all night caning stims then forget it but for those nights when you simply cannot sleep then they work. Not something to abuse - or take too many at once - mix with alcohol etc

What about 5HTP ? Valerian / Chamomile tea?

Phenergan is promethazine, isn't it? 40 mg. knocks me out, but leaves me feeling "woolly-headed" on waking. Diphenhydramine (Benylin, Nytol) works if I take 100 mg. and doesn't have the same severity hangover.

I have not found an OTC product containing doxylamine on its own; it's usually in a liquid product with paracetamol as a dose-limiter.

Valerian (Kalms) does work, but you have to take loads of it. I had a mate who bought a load "raw" from a herbalist.

The fake benzo merchants must be laughing all the way to the bank .....

Dear lord taking too much Nytol is fucking horrible. I didn't know if you take too much you get serious delirium. I was imaging spiders all over the place, at times on my legs, thought I could hear voices.

Christ that was a horrible time. 8o

doxylamine is also used for insomnia. Are they safe to use? It depends on how much you take/with what are you mixing them.
I knew people that had serious sleep pattern problems and they were helped by melatonin+5htp before sleeping (as someone else suggested). But they won't probably help with rebound insomnia after benzo cessation...

The ones I took were the herbal ones.

Iirc there's two varieties.
Sounds like you took the heavier duty version.

The active ingredient in Nytol is diphenhydramine. It's an antichollinergic which is why it produces delerium in overdose. I've taken 200mg and had no unpleasant effects, normal dose is 50mg.

I've just taken 50mg now actually as it's an anti-emetic too, I was feeling pukey, something to do with the weekend opioid indulgence I reckon.

Piriton is my favourite - chlorophenimine maleate I think - leaves you with a clearer head than diphen. Allegedly an SNRI antidepressant too.

I remember taking shedloads of Nytol and getting to sleep whilst amped on speedy coke many moons ago.
Must be a pretty good sleep aid.

That as maybe, but I think it is the exception as oppose to the rule. :) Anything that is sold o/c in the uk as a 'sleep' aid must be on the whole pish.

Lucky you if it worked. :)

Nah, that's not the case at all. The sedating antihistamines really do work, sometimes too well. I've been late for work on more than one occasion due to diphenhydramine still being in my system the following morning.

Even the herbal ones help a little. I tend not to use them though as they always give me a heavy feeling in my chest.

The concentrated valerian tablets are very effective, i just need 2 of them, my etizolams, and my mirtazapine (which by itself has only the mildest of sedative properties, well, on a 15mg dose anyway. Gonna see about getting the dose upped. Might not need so much of all this other stuff then. 8)

Best bet is valium, Nytol is absolute dog shit. its good for potentiating opiates but for sleep you're having a laugh.

i dont blame you for not having read all my OP as it was so long, but i have blown out / burnt out any chance of receving hypnotic effects from benzos by building a heavy and sustained tolerance. They still work for anxiety though, which quite frankly im amazed at. Plus with my new meds Mirtazapine also making me feel calm, i defiinately feel for the first time that its achievable for me to quit benzos.

Before hand i had resigned myself do being an addict for life.
