mushrooms from scratch

just a side note, im not saying this is going to spawn any psychodelic shroom or anything with psilocybin or psilocin but.. its a start i guess..

anyways, i thought i'd throw together a little experiment and mimic the outside mushroom friendly environment..

This soil contains brown rice flower, coffee grounds, store bought manure, wood chips and rye flour..

i through this stuff in a bowl and made some nice soil out of it, planted it inside my little terrarium and a few other things in cups went inside..
Turned on the light to mimic the sun and produce heat(which would also make the air kinda moist since the dirt was watered a few times..

well after about three days there's a pretty nice layer of mycelium forming at the top and also a little buttom mushroom that randomly appeared!

So i got the environment right, im hoping adding some psilocybin shroom spores would make something happen, what do you guys think?

this is a separate experiment i was doing... this is basicly the same soil mixture as above but i layered some pieces of bread at the bottom, it helped boost mycelium growth

If you're wondering im not planning on growing mushrooms to eat, i just have a general interest in fungi.. i just thought for the people who do grow magic mushrooms for experimenting with this method..
 
Just wondering how do you sterilise it psy? If it's not sterilised then you're just going to be swamped by the dreaded green/yellow lurgy.
 
Your pictures look thin and wispy, a sign of cobweb mold and not mycelium (but it is hard to tell from pictures alone). The fact there's moss growing in there is not a good sign (unless you introduced them yourself).

Sterilization is not essential (I've proven this with my own experiments) but it is highly recommended during colonization.

"mushroom friendly environment" is very specific for each mushroom temperatures, humidity, aeration,sterilization. It's a lot more complicated then some dirt in your 75deg house. I would suggest getting a mushroom growing book.
 
BL isn't the place for Mushroom cultivation, I would bring this over to the shroomery, im not saying its not welcome, but pointless this is a harm reduction site, shroomery is for cultivation. You just will get wayyyy more feedback over there and it makes BL look like a site that it isn't

I must say your title is funny tho, it made me think of going to the grocery store and getting flour and eggs to make mushrooms from scratch!

OP; while I appreciate experimentation, why are you trying to reinvent the wheel?

Your substrate is largely correct, but I gotta ask if you've sterilized anything? There's nothing really wrong with your setup, but why not try what works and has been demonstrated to have good yield?

I.e., innoculate a substrate > spawn > case > fruit.

You don't need anything other than a minimal amount of light to induce pinning, and usually (not always) Perlite to keep the humidity above 90%.

I am curious as well, why not just stick with sterile / proven methods???
 
I moved on to another experiment with mushrooms but to answer the questions, no, nothing was sterilized, no spores were added (other then moss spores which I added myself) after about four days small fruit body's of your everyday inactive mushrooms that grow in saburban grass after rain.. Weird. Well I don't have any picture as proof but I'm going to try a new experiment this time using a few different spore prints from a few different species (all are active) ill report in with a new thread later

Any Mushroom cultivator is a friend of mine, but F-THAT the PF tek and Spawning to coir takes up enough of my time, I cant imagine trying to recreate the game entirely, have you watched RRs vids? This would actually be kind of a cool post for the cultivation section on shroomery you would get hella responses good and bad. It sounds fun non the less go for it, come on over to the shroomery tho BL isn't the place for cultivation, if you are a member at the shroomery PM me your user name or when you get one, Ill watch your experiments

Ive been wanting to sign up at the shroomery for a while now.. But..for what ever damn reason im IP banned from signing up at that site.. ive never signed up there before haha im pretty confused but oh well.
 
It's better then my fist "experiment". When I was 13yrs old I ordered a south american cubensis spore print, then got some cow chips, got them wet, sprinkled the spores on them and put them in a dark room. Waited.... nothing.. bummer.

After that I read some books, 5 years later I had my own place and successfully grew some south American cubensis.

It's a hit or miss, trying to recreat the outdoor mushroom friendly environment can be a bitch, but when done right, it can be really cool and cheap!

OP; this is what a very low tech mushroom growing setup is yielding. Once my brf (brown rice flour) cakes are colonized, they're fairly resistant to contamination. This cake is in the finishing stages of a second flush. Cakes are producing from 1-4 g dried per cake per flush. Basically I only worry about contaminants during innoculation and colonization. Once a cake is in the fruiting chamber, it's all about humidity and air exchange and minimal exposure to light.
