According to a news release from Brown University, tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, while heavy imbibing ranks as the third leading cause of preventable death. However, the taxing of cigarettes is widely considered one of the best ways to reduce smoking. Due to the fact that smoking and drinking typically take place at the same time, a new study has looked into cigarette taxation and discovered that tax hikes deter heavy drinking among at-risk groups.

According to Sherry McKee, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, smoking and heavy imbibing take place at the same time at extremely high rates. Furthermore, tobacco has been demonstrated to raise the risk for heavy and troublesome drinking. Smokers imbibe more often and more heavily than non-smokers. The researchers noted that the co-occurrence of smoking and imbibing is of significant concern for clinicians due to evidence that health impacts exponentially increase with co-occurrence compared to singular abuse of alcohol and tobacco.

The researchers analyzed data collected through personal interviews with 21,473 alcohol drinkers as part of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. They examined whether hikes in cigarette taxes between Waves I and Waves II were linked with decreases in quantity and frequency of alcohol use. These examinations were completed by gender, dangerous drinking status, age, and income group, and were also adjusted for demographics, baseline alcohol consumption, and alcohol cost.

“We hypothesized that the public health benefits of cigarette taxes would extend beyond smoking to reduce alcohol consumption,” noted McKee. “Results suggest that increases in cigarette taxes were associated with reductions in alcohol consumption over time among male smokers. The protective effects were most pronounced among subgroups who are most at risk for adverse alcohol-related consequences, including male heavy drinkers, young adults, and those with the lowest income.”

According to Christopher W. Kahler, McKee’s colleague and professor and chair of the department of behavioral and social sciences at Brown School of Public Health, the results reveal that if states raise taxes on cigarettes, they are likely to reduce smoking and affect heavy drinking rates among men, especially those in the lower income bracket

I call bullshit. Now you can't smoke in pubs and clubs here, having a smoke outside actually slows down the drinking

What are you bibble-babbling about? Its an article saying that smokers are statistically higher to drinking a lot more and binge while they do it. So therefore if they raise the prices of cigs and smokers stop smoking or smoke much less then they will also change their drinking behavior, understand ya wallaby? lol :)... we over here in the USA smoke inside bars still, its aloud, except for places like NYC (but i wouldn't consider NYC American) YEE HAAA!!!!!!. where do you people live where you can't smoke inside a BAR?!?

Perhaps you should do it more quietly. They go outside and huddle on the curb like the degenerates they are.

raising the price of cigs won't make people drink less it will just make them drink less at bars which are already overpriced. More people just pregame and show up to bars already highly intoxicated. What do you think they're doing every 20 mins or so while the pregame is going on? Smoking a cig

waste of an article is a waste, and trying to say there is a set in stone cause and effect to anything morality related let alone something as spur of the moment and regret filled as binge drinking is just fucking stupid in my opinion and really makes me wonder why these universities and their bullshit studies are even looked at for possible answers, let alone something to finish wiping my ass with after a night of binge drinking and cig smoking comes back to haunt me in the morning. I got something brown for this brown study
