[MEGA]Community Growing advice, tips, tricks, & experiences Part 5 (2012-2013)

If you are growing from seed you cannot really give an accurate CBD (or THC) percentage. Any breeder that does is being disingenuous.

The only way to get consistent CBD and THC levels is to grow from clone so it is a genetic copy and with the same environment, since environment can alter THC and CBD levels.

If you are not going for something like a 1:1 THC:CBD strain then concentrating on the CBD levels as an indicator of how useful the strain is likely to be medically is a bit of distraction. You really need to just concentrate on strains that real people have said they find useful for their medical conditions. Remember, the medical properties come from a whole plethora of different components of the cannabis plant, from aromatic terpenes to THC itself.
 
If you are growing outside as a guerilla grow, I would get a small DC pump and run with a solar panel. These small air pumps that pump bubbles through air stones use very little power so you won't need to spend too much on very expensive kit.

If you wanted a really cool setup you could get power from a lead acid battery being trickle charged by the solar panel. I think you may need to use an invertor. I'm not that knowledgable about electrical stuff so you may want to do your own research.

If your looking for a high cbd strain but still like your thc look into GDP crosses on attitude as they tend to carry great cannabinoid ratios. As for a plant staying under 6 ft... it is possible through training an topping. But, it really depends on your hole or pot size. I use 6 ft fencing but, my plants tend to close in around 8-12+ ft by the end of flower.... And I train my girls the entire 5-6 month season.

What exactly are you looking for in the strain? What condition is it assisting? I wil. try and aid you in choosing proper genetics.

Will do. I'm feeling a lot better now, thanks. I have a feeling my nausea/vomiting was probably more likely because of eating some undercooked chicken rather than my tick bite, but I'm going to continue taking antibiotics anyway just in case.
 
As AE said "grand daddy purple". I am not a huge fan of GDP for personal reasons but, I am in a very* rare few. Most people love GDP, new smokers to seasoned smokers. For me many strains do not get me high.
I use cannabis of all varieties for two main reasons. Medical reasons and the enjoyment of the buzz. GDP is great medically but, I can not get a buzz of it due to tolerance (as with many strains). Back in the day when I was starting to grow and smoke I had a low tolerance of course. GDP was always a strain with great flavor, rich, colorful (its a beauty for sure) and had a great stone.

I have grown GDP with high levels. ~24%+ thc, .78% cbd, ~1% cbn. So THC levels are not the issue. Then I grew another cut of it in the past that was higher cbd ratio. I believe that batch was ~8% cbd/ 9% thc which was a great ratio for pain relief.

This,is probably the most sought after cbd heavy strain, that still has high thc (in california). That is something that didn't change in the various medical marijuana collectives I worked for in the past. Common conditions for people that tend to go for GDP is migranes, epilepsy, cramps, nausea, gastro conditions (great appetite stimulation), pain, anxiety etc.. It is definitely one of the better all around strains.

This was always a strain I recommended for patients coming into the shop with severe or terminal conditions. Definitely is one of the better pain relief strains made ever and it has been around for a long while. Even for the cuts that are not high cbd or near 1/1 ratios. The high thc and somewhat low cbd have always done magic for patients with pain, then the newer 1/1 ratio cuts are great for people who don't want a buzz.

AE- I just went out to the garden to snap some new pics as the grow so fast the one from last weekend is "outdated". Getting uploaded when I get done with all the garden work. I was going to say in our last PM that it sounds like food poisoning rather than lymes or tick related. Definitely good that your looking up.
Though, I wouldn't discredit it until you get your blood work back . Regardless, the amoxicilin will take care of it. Within a little bit of taking the antibiotics I was feeling much better. The worst was before my blood came back from the lab.
 
It's actually quite funny looking back on it. I insisted on my mate driving me to the hospital but I ended shitting and puking on the journey. I tried puking out the window as the car was moving but we were on the highway and it went absolutely everywhere. God knows what the other people on the road were thinking. Why I didn't carry a bucket with me I do not know.

8% CBD? Is that right? Not 0.8%? If it's 8% that's really high. I never knew that was possible in that strain.

There's on rush with the pics. Just whenever you get round to it, I don't mind.

I didn't think GDP was typically an outdoor strain? I seem to recall reading it is a pretty average yielder as well.

This person has arthritis and is also waiting to go get some testing done to see if they have cancer, good few weeks before the tests yet so I don't really know when that will come back. Fingers crossed they don't have cancer but I figure if the diagnosis comes back in a few months it would be better to be prepared medicinally. Since I only have space for two plants and this person doesn't definately have (or even that likely, just a concern you know) cancer, I don't want to be growing some super high CBD strain that is mainly good for cancer but no good for me to get a buzz off. I would just like to grow out a medium height indica plant with good potency, good yield and that is medicinally effective for arthritis and cancer treatment (both in terms of having value in inhibiting cancer cell growth and also alleviating symptoms associated with cannabis treatment like nausea and lack of appetite), it seems like the seeds would have to be relatively stable as well, since I only can put up two plants I don't really want a strain with much phenotype variation, which is why I have not opted for DP Blueberry as it seems perfect for me otherwise, that is part of the reason I initially selected White Russian as Serious Seeds seems to have a reputation for extremely stable genetics.

The Bubblelicious looks decent but I am pretty sure it mostly comes out sativa dominant, which is a bit of a pain. It is kind of annoying that most sites will advertise shit recreationally but offer little insight into their medicinal benefits like that isn't important. It seems like the connoisseur seed market is really aimed at the indoor grower who has the ability to grow out heaps of variations of the one strain and select what they like and if you are a small scal outdoor grower then you are shit out of luck, which is unfortunate. I am half starting to wonder if there is really any strain out there that will meet my needs as a seed, or if no matter what strain I get there is a reasonable chance that due to genetic variation it wont serve my purposes as well as I had hoped.

Worst case I could grow out some bagseed and let the trichomes go like 50% amber right? That would then be good for cancer and arthritis or is it not that simple? I have like 20 seeds from weed that mates grew out last year, 5 are guarantee'd indica's, the rest were indica's but the plant was pollenated by an unknown male so I suppose that could of turned it the other way. I was going to use these for a seperate guerrilla grow and only drop my money on a few seeds for a higher quality backyard/medicinal grow but I am almost beginning to wonder if I am almost as well to grow out what I have and just try time my harvest to meet my needs. Although, given the limited space I must admit feminised seeds still do seem like the better option.

I should add that this is my first grow, I have done extensive reading over the years as well as had many friends who grew out plants in their backyards which I lended a hand but wasn't really any part mine. So any strain reccomendations would have to be suitable for a relatively novice grower.

You heard it right AE I said 8%! awesome cut to make concentrates!

Drugmentor- No GDP is a great indoor strain and i have experience with it insidee. But, it goes great outside as well. Look on attitude seed bank. By far the best international shipping seedband online. Great specials, reliablility, and not to mention all the great strains from thebest breeders. Also their site contains much better descriptions with medical information often.

If you want a buzz+medical benifits GDP is the best all around strain imo. I would also recommend using seed from a respectable breeder rather than bag seed. Though bag seed can be alright.
 
You got any backup suggestions man? It doesn't seem like I can get those feminized from the seedbank (Attitude) I want right now (not being picky, my country has notoriously strict customs and my finances necessitate a pick n mix option).

Hey Living, I found out that the Thai Fantasy Max autos I'm growing are more akin to a super auto like super cali haze and are not based on ruderalis at all. I planted my seeds on the 25th May and they've only just started to show vague signs that they are just about to start flowering, 65 days after they finished germinating. If they were planted earlier - perhaps in March - and given much larger pots (say ~50L) they would get huge. They certainly outgrew their 19L fabric pots fairly rapidly.

I'll have to reserve judgement until harvest but I'm quietly confident based on other peoples' reviews of this strain. I seem to get the impression Kannabia are underrated. Their auto Hobbit does really well outdoors too I have beeen led to believe.

Good shit AE. I will see how yours comes out this season! After lot's and lot's of thinking and discussing with the lady, autos just are not worth it for us. I like to keep my plant numbers down even though legally I can have just under 100 and most people in this and the two other emerald triangle counties have a few hundred plants to a few thousand. Commonly, in the thousands. People mostly looking for quick cash. But, I enjoy caring for my girls and being very very attentive. You just can't do that with those numbers.
I also prefer very large yielding plants (depending on strain and hole/pot upwards of ten lbs) then having a few oz on hundreds of plants. Anyway, adding auto's to the garden just brings my plant numbers up a bunch. I would need many dozens of auto's, to make it even worth giving a spot in the garden. If I needed to increase my plant numbers for any reason, I would benefit from more 300-400 gallon pots then small autos. I think next year I will go back to light deprivation on a few girls to have some early harvest. Light dep comes out very early here. It's been out for over a month.

Let me see whats up with fem GDP seeds and i will get back to you. It's not such an issue to have reg. seeds. If you don't mind reg seeds there are some awesome crosses with GDP as well. You get more for the money and you can germ all them and then instantly force flower inside for short period of time. You should see pistils pretty fast that way. It will revert back to veg with little problems. You may have a 2 week shutdown period where the roots are getting adjusted.
 
Hey AE, thanks for the suggestion, I am not sure what seedbank you are referring to but I am pretty set on Attitude for the record they have with Aus customs as well as the Pick'N'Mix option.

The reason I am set on feminised seeds is because I have VERY limited space to grow, I am going to be growing like 2 plants, I don't have space for the 4 or 5 neccessary to pretty much guarantee 2 females and for that reason non fem seeds are not something I really want to consider. I know fem seeds can have their drawbacks and in an ideal world I would be growing a fair bit more under less discrete conditions but right now fem just works for my situation.

Some of your last post suggests you think I am doing this indoor? This is an outdoor grow man, I am in Australia our season is just starting up in the next month or so. I have no access to any indoor set up, I am growing strictly outdoor this year. If I had access to an indoor set up then I would just run Blueberry and find a nice pheno or two and I would be totally set but unfortunately I am not so fortunate/solvent.

I have some concerns about GDP, I know you are a very experienced grower Livinginthealps and I don't doubt that GDP is a very good medical and recreational strain, infact, it is one that has appealed to me for a long time. I have never smoked it but it has a repuation as a very stony/narcotic/couch lock strain and that is essentially what I look for in a daily strain. However, it seems to me that it has been bred for indoor growing mainly, and while it is possible to get good results with it outdoor this is probably more easily achieved by an experienced grower (which I am not, this is my very first grow). I would also go out on a limb and guess that GDP is likely a bit mold susceptible, I am going to be growing these two plants in the corner of a yard, surrounded by other plants (and fence on two sides) to conceal it. The spot also only really gets like 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, for this reason I worry I might suffer mold issues since it does seem like a bit of an ideal circumstance for it, I know that any plant can cop mold but it seems to me that a squat and very densely budded plant would fare worse in this scenario than others. I have also read that GDP yields pretty shitty, something I would almost definately experience being my first time and with limited sunlight, I always assumed that its quality would mostly make up for it but some of your comments about it not being the most potent strain/that you can't get high off it make me think twice about that. Ideally I would think there would be some high potency, medically useful indica strain that was bred to be grown outdoors and yields atleast average, if not a bit better? I would always of thought so anyway, but I must say it is seeming increasingly like almost all the good heavy indica's were bred to be grown indoors which kinda sucks...

I understand your concerns DM. I gotta say that your probably thinking out your first strain a little too much. Your going to obviously run into problems since it is your first time. But, your right GDP does better inside probably. Though, I have seen GDP and GDP crosses outside before. As for mold, don't worry too much unless you live in a humid/wet place. Indica vs sativa, stretched or squat doesn't matter. I will say certain strains are pretty much completely resistant towards mold and poor growing conditions. If that is a factor, I would look at other fem. strains. I have a purple alien outside that is doing very awesome . Very short right now probably 4 ft compared to 6 like the others. But the tightest internodal spacing I have ever seen. I cant grab the main stalk of the plant at all or I will snap off branches. It is very squat and gonna be a great smoke. I can recommend that as well due to the ease of growth this season. Let me think about what would work for you outside. I will take in ease of growing, mold resistant, pest and plague. I will get back to you today. I'll make sre it is in stock dude. GDP is a high thc strain it just doesn't cut it for me and it never really has. But, its medicinal properties are undeniable. Just because I have the most ridiculous tolerance and can't get stoned, doesn't mean you can't either. You WILL get high lol

I know I am putting a lot of thought into it, and it might seem like more than necessary. I should explain, I have never done any kind of gardening at all, I am allowed to have 2 plants in an area that is currently wide open and requires me to plant a bunch of plants and shit in the next month or two to grow with my weed (all in all a MAJOR pain in the ass for me), I have no criminal record so am obviously risking that and I am also risking my place of residence by taking the chance that I wont be able to cover up the weed totally. (I really am doing it with homeowners permission, but they are VERY serious about plausible deniability on their part) Furthermore, someone close to me might be rather sick with an often fatal ailment which I am becoming increasingly convinced that cannabis is incredibly helpful for and may even help cure. When you consider all these factors it is pretty damn important to me that I get it right, and particularly in regards to being able to help this person that is close to me and also for the specifics of the effects that I personally look for in cannabis these are not things that I can just plant any plant and get the best results, ESPECIALLY not with only space for two plants and a budget that wouldn't allow for many more regardless (negating the guerilla option). I could definately be described as lazy but when I commit to something I do tend to go at it 110% and obsess.

I would really just love it if someone could suggest to me an easy to grow indica that has good medical properties (particularly for cancer, but also arthritis and anxiety if possible, cancer being by far the most important) and a strong couchlock stone, not much variance in qualitative effects of the phenotypes, that is actually meant to be grown outdoors and will yield atleast average and hopefully a little better without becoming a large plant. I know that is pretty specific but at the same time, with the thousands of strains out there I would of thought there would be more than enough that fit my needs exactly, but it seems like the more research I do and the more strains I look into the more questions I have. I was really kinda hoping somebody experienced could just say grow this, it will meet your medical and recreational needs, wont be hard to grow and Bob's your uncle, but it seems this was wishful thinking... I looked up that Purple Alien and it isn't on Attitude either unfortunately...

If you have the space, you should have no problem hiding two plants.

What I will suggest is on attitude scroll your mouse over the words "pick n' mix" and see which strains on the list are available. Pick n' mix allows you to get individual seeds. That way you don't need the entire pack. I suggest you getting 8-10 female seeds even if you plan on only germinating two of them. It is good to have around, so you don't need to order again. Besides, you get LOT'S of freebies and extra seeds from attitude. Especially, when you order a few different brands seeds.
