Norway's Green Party has proposed setting up a government agency to grow and sell cannabis, as it rolls out its manifesto ahead of this September's election. The party has called for "state-controlled production and sale of cannabis", as well as decriminalisation of harder drugs.

"Current policies are clearly not working," the party's spokesperson Hanna Marcussen, told Aftenposten newspaper.

"Today marijuana is sold openly along the Aker River in Oslo without anyone managing to restrict access. It is time that someone takes on this difficult debate."

Full Story

The snowball continues to gain momentum. I'm really pleased with the sheer amount of stories such as this that have been cropping up this year.

It's a great place but I wouldn't expect the Norwegian state to start selling weed anytime soon, they don't even let people buy Strepsils or beer on Sunday.

plus the article should read "today something resembling marijuana is sold openly along the Aker River in Oslo"

Unfortunately, the Norwegian Green Party doesn't have anybody in parliament.

All I can say is that it's nice to see a political party buck the trend by not only placing it in their manifesto, but shouting about it too. Bravery from Politicians is rare, so this is refreshing.

They're a very small party, but they're growing for sure. I've seen them mentioned a couple of times in the big newspapers here the last couple of weeks. I'm excited to see how many votes they'll get.

It's no problem to get drugs in Norway, especially in Oslo. When walking through the streets of Oslo, there's a lot of black guys standing around corners saying "hey my friend, want some Columbian? Columbian cocaine.", etc. In smaller towns, the police uses way too much resources on busting people for smoking cannabis. All it does is make young people get criminal records - but it doesn't really stop anyone from doing drugs. I don't know anyone who has stopped using drugs/smoking weed after getting caught. It's really stupid, because they're not getting anywhere, except for with their detection statistics, which raises with each drug bust. 1 teenager caught smoking weed equals 1 rapist getting proved guilty, but they don't have to use as much resources on the rapist. I feel I've gone way off-topic now.

There's also the political party DLF, The Liberals, who wants all drugs to be legalized. But they're even a smaller party than the Green Party.
