Canada - Justin Trudeau wants to legalize marijuana

im with purplekush1, downers rule, letting go into bliss of warmth and forgetting all worries beats jaw clenching and immune system issues etc
ya man downers ftw! cocaine is ok only because it isnt as edgy as amps . It just gets old to be tweaked out and shit...especially when you have tooth problems afterwards and all. The only thing stimulants are good for is the weight loss that accompins them. Opiate euphoria is way more pleasant than stimulant euhporia imo

The problem is we don't really have a marijuana problem in this country. Addicts and users are generally not incarcerated, the persecution is fully focused on dealers and suppliers who have no qualms about being profit-seeking criminals. I can't imagine what Trudeau is hoping to accomplish with this statement, but I'm worried because he did say some smart things that I agree with.

You need the dealers and suppliers for the addicts and users to exist. These people cannot be decoupled from each other. If you use a drug and dismiss your dealer as somehow morally below you, you are a hypocrite.

You've missed the point, which is that this "let's legalize it" statement is not going to win more votes than it will lose. Regardless, it's not hypocritical to recognize the divide between users and dealers. Even the law makes the difference between the two clear: buying drugs is not a felony charge, selling them is. It's also a fallacy to think that users and dealers could not be decoupled. While a dealer depends on users for profit, a user who gets his drugs from other avenues (eg. growing pot, prescription drugs paid for by insurer) does not need a dealer.

That touches upon one of the goals of legalization; to remove the criminal dealer from the equation and allow the product to be sold at corner stores by merchants who already run their business legally. If and when that happens, I think it's far more likely the current dealers will look for other criminal opportunities rather than open up their own corner stores to sell what they've always sold, but legally for less profit.

Obviously the user and criminal dealers can be decoupled if there is an alternative. But I am talking about currently illegal drugs here, where the only way to get a drug is (1) manufacture it yourself or (2) buy it from someone who is not legally allowed to sell it. Since only a tiny fraction of users will do the former, the use of illegal drugs depends on the latter. Therefore, unless you think that using an illegal drug is inherently wrong, it doesn't make sense to consider the provision of said illegal drug to be inherently wrong either.
