"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Pope Francis has criticised drug legalisation plans in Latin America during the inauguration of a clinic for drug addicts in Rio de Janeiro.

The roots of drug abuse should be tackled, he said on the third day of his visit to Brazil.

Uruguay is close to allowing the legal sale of marijuana, with other countries pondering similar liberalisation.

Earlier, the Argentine-born pontiff celebrated the first Mass of his trip, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida.

He warned tens of thousands of faithful against the "passing idols" of money, power and pleasure.

After the visit to Aparecida, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, the pope flew back to Rio de Janeiro.

At the inauguration of a drug rehabilitation clinic at the Sao Francisco hospital, he hugged former addicts and heard their stories.

'Dealers of death'
"It is necessary to tackle the problems which are at the root of drug abuse, promoting more justice, educating the youth with the values that live in society, standing by those who face hardship and giving them hope for the future," he said.

Pope Francis also warned against plans to legalise drugs in Latin America and condemned drug-traffickers.

"How many dealers of death there are that follow the logic of power and money at any cost! The scourge of drug-trafficking, that favours violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death, requires of society as a whole an act of courage," he said.

Leaders in Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and others have spoken for softer stances on drugs policy.

In Uruguay, a project decriminalising marijuana sale is set to be voted in Congress next week.

You wont to tackle something? How about you tackle the paedophiles you have in your church that have abused and hurt so many people and all their families and hide behind your religion. Who could take anything you or your church says seriously is beyond me, your religion should be banned and criminalised more than any drug imo. Scumbags.

I was always under the impression that "the Pope smokes dope". No?

I mean, I remember David Letterman's top 10 things that Manuel Noriega had to do before he went to prison. One of them was send the Pope a few extra kilo's.

That sounds exactly like the church to me. The fact they pay no taxes is just the icing on the cake.

How can such a harmful organisation that is world renowned for its systematic abuse of children, since the beginning of recorded time - which, by the way, corresponds to some religeon's beginnings not be considered a terrorist organisation? Does that mean that hurting children isn't terrorism? Who is affected by what these priests preach? Just the children? The family of the children? The community when the church hides it and either keeps the priest on or sends him to another community to terrori.. I mean, to teach?

Obviously the whole close our eyes and ears and say "la la la" works for the church and the government that the church helps to keep in place, or get elected, all the while science proves evolution is real and all of the bible is a work of fiction, much like Ron Hubbard's ideas which made him and all of his followers rich - after he said that religeon was the way to get rich. Even though gravity is just a "theory", we can't have this whole evolution "theroy", this is religeon folks!

I think you guys are being a bit harsh on Christianity. If all of Christs followers were striving to take on the qualities of Jesus (a saintly person yes?) then it would all be all rite, there's bad eggs in all sects of religion and its like a good proportion of people are stupid or lying to themselves.

I totally agree that power corrupts, or the people who make it into positions of power in a church, tend to hold onto archaic ideas but that doesn't really mean Christianity should be banned, there are some people who do get a lot from the community of church and there is something sacred about a space where people with positive vibrations pray or meditate each week.

On a side note if 10% of priests (could be wrong on that figure), are affiliated with child sex abuse then there does need to be some external investigation and sackings...

^people are being harsh on Catholicism, not Christianity.

There's probably no such thing as Christianity in today's world. Original Christianity focused on gnosis, charity and (for lack of a better term) superpowers. 1st century Christians literally went around the world feeding the poor, healing the sick, studying mysteries and publicly performing miracles. That, at least, is the claim.

i could replace catholicism with christianity in that post really, people with fucked up ideas are everywhere, the institution isn't really to blame, people have negative and positive experiences with catholicism. you could have an article talking about the motivations of the media corporations analogous to the catholic church (small stretch i guess), or politics in almost every country.

He should mind his own fucking business and crawl back into whatever hole he came out of.

Of course he's against drug legalization. People who do drugs will question the Church koolaid and start thinking for themselves. Can't have that.

Isn't it funny how all of the big organizations and governments who are against drugs are also into their own kind of public mind control?

I used to think Christianity was a bizarre death-cross-worshiping sect, and therefore that essentially all Christians were weak fools, clinging to tradition, maybe even mentally ill.
I kinda still do, but I have now met several Christians who were really very loving and intelligent people.
So I have realized that there are exceptions to every rule.

If you read the Bible, it's also got a lot to do with cool powers like being able to make paralytics walk, being able to materialize food and wine, bringing dead people back to life, speaking perfect Ukranian with no lessons, accurately predicting the future, etc. The thing is, the New Testament writers realized that witnessing these things was necessary to bring new people over into the faith.

And part of the promise was, join us and you too will be able to do these things!

But in the absence of miracles, you have to pretty much be born into a family that tells you about these things at a very impressionable age.

Regardless of this, everyone is expected to live the way Christians want you to live. And this is a problem for me. It's no longer whether or not I believe what you're saying; it's whether or not I live in a place where you've influenced the laws that govern my behavior.

That is unacceptable. Preach all you want to me, but don't send men with guns to force me to live in a way acceptable to you.

Good luck when it happens in areas that are 100 percent Catholic. When the police/judge/jurors all catholic. My uncle was molested by a priest in the 1950's and the RCMP threatened to kick his ass if ever made the accusation again. Finding someone external to investigate is going to mean bringing in investigators of other faiths or no faith. In places like South America that's not possible.
The Catholic church has done as little as possible to address this issue. Half hearted apologies but no telling priests they can marry. Even the Boy Scouts seem more sincere in their attempts to rid their organization of these monsters.
Drug dealers have never hurt anyone I know, in fact there are a lot of people getting wasted to erase the memory of what these priests did to them.

I got a chuckle. I love it when you're funny. Maybe you need to get out of the lounge mindset when you're not posting in the lounge, maybe not though, it does suit you.
