The Birth of a Police State: UK Police to be Granted Sweeping New Powers

it's a funny old world. i remember back in the day going to some big demo to do with the bnp book store, it didn't get much publicity even though there were 10s of thousands of people there. a few people turn up in birmingham on saturday edl and counter edl people and there was just loads of little news reports on it. i remember the days of the criminal justice bill too. i just think people like their comfort as so many of the old sayings go about the folks coming to love their slavery and all that. it's a bit of a snitchers society and facebook can be used as the thought police. i have other stuff to say but I can't get it straight at the moment.

Right, so now you partially agree? I never said 'quick, everyone panic!', I merely posted something I'd read, which could turn into an issue. I'm not the sort of person that spreads mental shit, all over Facebook. Just stuff that's relevant to people. This is relevant to people, and you really are naive, if you believe this is just to control groups of kids.
 
I agreed with a general comment about an increase in surveillance.
I do not agree that this legislation marks some turning point and its purpose is to prevent protest.


Your the naive one if you think protest achieve anything or worry the powers that be in the first place. How many marched against Iraq ? Did they listen ? Did they fuck

what about the poll tax? wouldn't it be nice if the world wasn't ran by anyone, let alone these bad bastards that do run everything. What the hell is it all about eh? but why are people so daft? i wonder what it's like to be a watcher of cctv. must be pretty boring. What is there to be gained from controlling people or telling on people? I'm not into either controlling others or telling on others. When i was at primary school I couldn't believe the sort of things people would would tell the teachers about you. are they born that way or conditioned that way?
In south africa wasn't there some ruling on no meetings and a meeting being 2 or more people being in the same place at the same time/ How i hate th if you have nothing to hide brigade.

Basically they're bringing in the porn ban. Easily switched up to block websites that are organising protest, encouraging dissent etc. They're bringing in this fucking asbo mk 2 thing. They can easily use that to stop any (legitimate) public protests. It's so fucking obvious what the underlying plan here is and it's got fuck all to do with porn or terrorists.


I saw some mention about how it would be a good thing as it could have easily stopped the recent EDL marches/gatherings. Bullshit. It could have easily stopped them. Yes. It shouldn't though. The EDL are fucking abhorrent and total fuckwits, but if they want to stand on the street and wave their flags they've got every right to. As soon as we start saying it's OK to bust up an EDL "protest" then it rapidly becomes OK to bust up a political protest of any view that the government of the day don't agree with.

John major made scrapped the poll tax, but it was thatcher that introduced it. I imagine if it had been his idea we'd still be paying it now.

The world needs to be run by someone because by n large people are arseholes. When law and order breaks down we don't end up with Glastonbury, we end up with Somalia. Most people recognize this. Obviously we are controlled by greedy, evil psychopaths. But thats because a greedy, psychopathic nature is what it takes to rise to the top of the pile, weather its the top of a society like ours or a worker's paradise like china

Thats not what i said. I was using the EDL as an example of how the right to protest is part of our society, even if the protesters are meatheads and it causes hassle / time / money

And the vast majority of people will at some point feel trodden on, that society is inherently unfair and the people at the top are power hungry, greedy, selfish ass clowns. Throughout history people who have been pushed too far will object and fight back, big time.

I don't remember saying that protests achieve anything. Can you tell me where I did? I was more bothered about people getting chucked in cells, for attending raves, etc. That was my main concern. The title of the thread is the title of the article, if you didn't notice. I didn't come up with it.

The criminal justice act was created 10 years ago....you're a bit late to change that i'm afraid.
I remember hearing that was the end of freedom but illegal raves still take place. Some credit the criminal justice act with the birth of club culture [ but thats not really relevent...i suppose ]

I'm not trying to change anything... People don't really get thrown in the cells, for simply turning up to an event, do they? They'd need a lot of cells. It's normally when people start fighting with the police, or the police start fighting with them. However, this new act will mean they can be a bit more 'hands on', know what I mean?
 
Not really TBH.
I think in theory you can get banged up for being within half a mile of a rave or something silly.

As i mentioned earlier i have seen the police turn a blind eye, but yeah i guess they can and do bust raves. So many factors, maybe if its small they CBA, or maybe if its too big they can't deal with the numbers, as you say.

Its right to be skeptical as the screws are tightened, I just dont see this legislation as anything new or anything i havent seen before. My objections were more with the general tone of the blog thing you linked and being told that "you people are fucked" as someone else said, not at anything you said....think it just got a bit heated....as these conversations often do
 
Have to say PTCH's and Pontifex's words ring truest with me...It is unsettling to see our government try to pass an enabling act-type law.

Time will tell as to how 'Nazi'-ish the government and police behave once this bill gets passed (if at all).
 
in combination with the new surveilance powers act they are planning, plus the exposure of GCHQ mass spying on the internet backbones and data sharing scam with france/usa/australia/newzealand going on anyway, the government is clearly not planning on turning this country into a liberal paradise.
