Researchers at Granada University in Spain said drinking beer after strenuous physical activity can be beneficial for the body.

The scientists said their study found beer can help dehydrated people retain liquid better than water alone, The Telegraph, a Biritsh newspaper, reported Friday.

Professor Manuel Garzon, who led the study, said the bubbles in beer can help quench thirst and the carbohydrates in the beverage can help make up for burned calories.

The study involved a group of students asked to perform strenuous activities at a temperature of about 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Half of the students were given a pint of beer after their exercise and half were given a pint of water. Garzon said the hydration affect on the beer drinkers was "slightly better" than the sober group.

Wow i love me some beer just had a session of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but damn does it make me thirsty afterwards. If I dont drink a bunch of water or gatorade after a session i'll get a hangover the next day.

I actually tried this yesterday due to this article.
After my 12 km (7 mile) bike ride in 38 degree C (100 F) heat index, I had a beer.
Nothing in my stomach for hours, and I actually got fairly drunk, and lost all energy.
I didn't get the usual energy after exercise. I had a chance to spend some time with my daughter, but I was too tired to do much of anything at all. I felt like I wasted the chance, and my evening, and hated it.

Maybe just a pint of beer might have been beneficial to that group. I've went on benders where I drank nothing but beer.
Seemed like I just got more thirsty and drank more beer. Made me bloated and grumpy too. :?

^ Maybe one but the overall effects of large amounts of alcohol is dehydration. Trust me I'm 49 with a looong history of beer drinking. There is nothing beneficial to beer as being hydrating.

As an alcholic I understand what your saying about the dehydration. It's usually the only hangover symptom I get.

But for some reason I still think that that one ice cold bud light is more refreshing than a glass of water after a long bike ride or mowing the yard. Almost as good as some sweet tea.

An additional study is now indicated, comparing low alcohol beer with the regular product, to discover if it's the bubbles or the alcohol responsible for the effect.
