Man Dies After Winning Beer Drinking Contest In Spain

Joaquín Alcaraz Gracia claimed the title of beer drinking champ during a festival in Spain Wednesday, but his victory was short-lived. The 45-year-old man died after the beer drinking contest, during which he reportedly consumed six liters of brew (about 12.5 pints) in 20 minutes.

According to local reports, Gracia won the drinking festival's top prize and hoisted his trophy into the air. But the event, held in the Gea y Truyols district of Murcia, took a tragic turn soon after when Gracia began to vomit and didn't stop.

At that time, witnesses called emergency services, believing Gracia was suffering from alcohol poisoning. Seated in a chair, Gracia was held upright while bystanders waited for medical personnel. Observers noted to local media that the heavyset man appeared to nod off.

By the time the medical team arrived, Gracia was reportedly in cardiac arrest. The 45-year-old was rushed to a local hospital, but passed away shortly after his arrival Wednesday night.

Though Gracia's alcohol consumption is believed to be a factor in his death, officials have not confirmed his specific cause of death. In fact, Mayor José Manuel Gracia walked back the official tally of how much Gracia drank, telling local newspaper La Verdad the winner consumed two to three liters during the contest.

Under the rules of the drinking competition, contestants must drink as many liter-glasses of beer as possible in the 20-minute time span.

The beer drinking contest is part of the area's annual festival, which has been held for more than 15 years. However, following the death, future festival plans have been suspended, La Nueva España notes.

A winner is him, eh? It's a wonder we've lasted this long as a species with prime examples of human idiocy as this.

I think that drinking competitions or drug taking competitions are just stupid and get people killed, sick or mentally sick.

Not to mention that it isn't so much of a contest of one's ability to hold their liquor, but rather one's ability to consume large amounts of liquid in general, since it was all consumed in 20 minutes.

Might as well have provided them with de-alcoholised beer and nobody would have died.

The fucker died after only 12 and a half pints? Okay i could see a teenager with no tolerance dying from that but someone entering a drinking contest would have to be a light weight to die from that. I've drank alot more then that and survived (a 26oz bottle of bourbon in about half a hour is my record) and so have many others i've known.

Fucking wimp :p

Hell yeah, I guzzle fifths of vodka.

Tolerance does play a part.

Ah Vodka my nemesis. I could never drink Vodka straight and it is one liquor that has a tendency to make me violent for some reason. Probably because i tend to down it and black out and loose all common sense. The last time i drank straight vodka i ended up getting brought home by a cop cause i laid the boots to a well hated bouncer at the local bar here. Thankfully no charges where laid cause they could have gotten me on assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon (i tried to skull him open with a bottle but someone stopped me thank fuck) and probably a few other dandies.

Fucking vodka :p . Gimme whiskey or Rum anyday over that shit.
