Over one billion dollars’ worth of heroin each year – that is the deadly fallout Pakistan gets from the blooming narcotics industry that provides the main cash crop in devastated Afghanistan. Locals say heroin is cheaper than food.

It’s thought Pakistan has more than four million drug addicts, but less than 80 dedicated drug rehab clinics.

As RT’s Lucy Kafanov reports from Karachi, those heroin addicts don’t even bother hiding their habit. For many this is a deadly path.

Local young man Abdullah spent two weeks looking for his father, a heroin addict, eventually finding him in Karachi’s largest morgue.

While help for drug addicts is in short supply, there is no shortage of heroin on the streets of Karachi.

Afghanistan is the world’s largest producer of opium – heroin’s main ingredient – and accounts for 90 per cent of the global supply. Roughly 40 per cent of it is smuggled through Pakistan.

Opium production is up for the third year in a row, and predicted to grow more. When NATO leaves in 2014, there are fears the floodgates will open for the spread of the deadly harvest.

If it was legal to grow opium, smoke opium, snort or shoot heroin, you would give the farmers in Afghantistan a way to make money without the need for the Taliban.

True, the war on drugs is pointless. legalization could help the global economy, its beyond me why they dont do it.
 
lol, fears that the floodgates will open when NATO leaves, wasn't it only after NATO arrived that production jumped up something insane like 40 times what it was before?

I agree, me too.

Imagine a world where heroin wasn't (in my country) a normal (average) weeks wage for less than 3 grams.

Now, we could all buy food AND heroin. Just because it isn't illegal, profits aren't going to organised crime and those who are addicted can attempt to get their lives together before they even attempt quitting.
 
/\ I don't think so. I believe that for a long time I have heard that it was so hard for farmers there because they made practically nothing if they grew food crops but much, much more (I don't remember the numbers) if the grew poppies. This was well before the war.

Yes, that's true. I agree, but I don't see your point. If your point is the fact the CIA worked with the contras and most likely, with the Taliban, then yes, I agree that should be stopped. What better way than legalizing the growing of, using of and distribution of poppies?

The farmers are currently selling their poppies to the Taliban, because there are no other crops that will keep their families alive.

Imagine if they sold their poppies to a medical company instead of the Taliban. If it was legal, the Taliban wouldn't need to be involved.

Edit - I mean, try to imagine living in that situation... "I'm sorry sir but you do not have enough rupees to buy this WonderBread, but for that amount I give you 2 grams of heroin! Thank you, come again!"
 
This is what happens when you give people politically incorrect situations to live in...

They try to escape from it. Even knowing they are poisoning themselves and everyone around them, they have no fucking choice.

It’s the only way you can survive... Live starving and unhappy or die high..

And you damn sure know which one I’m choosing ;)
