"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
From Jay-Z to Madonna and Miley Cyrus, dance music's move into the mainstream has seen more and more references to the drug in song lyrics

Not long into Jay-Z's new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, the rapper delivers an emphatic statement: "I don't pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford." The Molly in question is the latest, purportedly purified version of MDMA – aka ecstasy – its new moniker derived from the word "molecule". Tom Ford being a fashion label, the proposition is that one either uses MDMA or wears an expensive black tuxedo. It is a false dichotomy, of course, but it does illustrate American popular music's recent conflict of interest with the drug.

Molly's ascent to the mainstream lexicon has roughly coincided with the ascent of Skrillex and the clumsily named electronic dance music (EDM) to the top of the US dance music charts. It has become ubiquitous not just at clubs and festivals but on television commercials, in sports arenas and anywhere else requiring euphoric builds and monstrous crescendos. Madonna, through her powers of appropriation, named her 2012 album MDNA, and, on stage at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami that same year, asked the crowd: "Has anyone seen Molly?" She was roundly condemned for encouraging drug use and later claimed it was simply a song about a girl named Molly. But the die was cast. EDM was encroaching on hip-hop's two-decade dominance of pop music, dragging club and rave culture and MDMA along with it. In many cases, hip-hop opened the door.

Over the past year, zeitgeisty rappers such as Danny Brown and A$AP Rocky have increasingly made music with EDM artists, actively bridging the sounds and cultures between rap and dance, and Molly has emerged as the lyrical signifier of this relationship. Popular Southern rapper 2 Chainz has referenced it on multiple songs, including chart-topping hits Beez in the Trap by Nicki Minaj and G.O.O.D. Music's Mercy with Kanye West. But it was a newcomer from Atlanta, Trinidad James, whose celebration of Molly's benefits (libidinous behaviour) and downfalls (sweating) seemed to push the drug into the mainstream. His Molly song, All Gold Everything, went from self-produced free mixtape standout all the way to the Billboard top 40 in June 2012, and shortly thereafter led to a multi-million dollar deal with Def Jam Records NBA star LeBron James was caught on camera rapping along to the song's most famous lyric ("popped a Molly, I'm sweatin'") during a warmup. The video went viral. Another video, "Popped a Molly I'm Sweating For 6 Minutes", which is that same lyric looped for that amount of time, has had 2m views on YouTube. (Ironically, if you watch at least 10 seconds of those six minutes, an advertisement for Magna Carta Holy Grail is likely to pop up on your screen.)

Controversially, Rick Ross rapped on the remix of Rocko's U.O.E.N.O: "Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it. I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it." It was a lyric whose sentiment is not all that uncommon in rap these days, in that it posed the male rapper as the supplier, his anonymous female companion as the vessel, and Molly as the automatic gateway to sexual gratification. Ross was very quickly provoked forced to apologise for his insinuation that it was perfectly acceptable to dose the unknowing and have sex with the unconsenting, all in the name of Molly.

However, all of this molly-popping and subsequent finger-wagging has not been limited to Jay-Z's penthouse recording studio. A recent article in the New York Times, titled "Molly: Pure, but Not So Simple", quotes numerous doctors on the dangers of Molly, its increasing impurity and the horrible A&E cases they have seen because of added impurities such as bath salts and methamphetamine.

All I saw was a bunch of pop stars who can't write music clinging to something people this is "cool"

I mean great for pure MDMA lord knows we need more of that, but this leads to irresponsible use. Why can't they just sing about crack like the good old days.

the only rappers stated in this article i consider make music and not shit are danny brown and a$ap rocky. They bring new sounds to the movement, and actually are able to rap. 2chainz,Trinidad james suck. Nicki minaj is up there iwth bieber on the piedestal of the greatest failures music has seen. Bitch got ass implants and thinks shes all that, with lyrics such as bobodoum da yaya super bass :! just replaying that song in my head makes me cringe. She has the nerve to call herself a rapper on top of that? Common.

Is it actually short for molecule because that's is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of.

I definitely have been noticing in the past couple of years that the "top 40" has been sounding increasingly electronic. Not that I mind. I'd listen to electronic over hip hop any day of the week. And man does it sound good when rolling. I'm glad more ppl have had a chance to try molly. The therapeutic potential it has IME is enormous.

If the ''molly'' people were taking was MDMA maybe yes. But a good part of the young people ''poppin molly'' after hearing it from a trinidad james song are popping meth,2c-x,Mdma analogues, a mixture of those, other shady ass rcs. Oh yeah and pipes, i saw molly reports that were pipes+caffeine. Methylone is more and more present too. Tbh MDMA is a very destructive drug. WHy can i do meth, coke, opiates, dissociatives once aor twice a month and be perfectly fine, but take mdma every month and there is gonna to be eventually negative changes present. Not to mention you overdo it youre in for months and months of fucking hell. No drug has ever fucked me up that badly in such a short amount of time. I was 16, im 19 now and some of the changes are still present. And it was teste molly btw, wish i wouldbve continued testing my pills because it wouldve spared a very bad experience that changed me permanently i fear.

That may be true. Or, it might not be so. With the way some of these celebs tour the planet with their little entourages - I'm sure they have better access and more connections than I do (and I used to be a massive etard with many good sources).

In other words, they, or one of their errand boys might know where to get the good stuff. And they are probably aware that "this" area is dry as hell and full of RCs, pipes, etc. Also, they might know "this other area" is a hot spot for actual mdma. These hot spots really do exist, and I would talk about them in more detail, but obviously I can't be naming sources. Just know that there are spots where you're all but guaranteed to receive ecstasy pills with nothing but high purity mdma in them at a very good price.

Tbh MDMA is a very destructive drug.

That's your opinion, and I'd wager it's mostly influenced by negative past personal experiences with possibly bunk and/or dirty pills.

That's not to say that I think MDMA is completely safe, because I sure don't.

WHy can i do meth, coke, opiates, dissociatives once aor twice a month and be perfectly fine, but take mdma every month and there is gonna to be eventually negative changes present. Not to mention you overdo it youre in for months and months of fucking hell.

I dunno. Why can I do all the MDMA I want and feel okay about a day after the "Tuesday Blues", yet, using meth now always results in a panic attack, or smoking weed now makes me extremely paranoid and borderline delirious?

Here's what I do know: We all react very differently to drugs, particularly the psychotropic variety. On top of that, there are several other factors at play when (for example) you have a bad experience while rolling, or when I start to experience an incoming panic attack after smoking some meth or weed.

No drug has ever fucked me up that badly in such a short amount of time. I was 16, im 19 now and some of the changes are still present. And it was teste molly btw, wish i wouldbve continued testing my pills because it wouldve spared a very bad experience that changed me permanently i fear.

You're not the only one. Read below (if you want) how an ecstasy pill brought me to the brink of suicide, how it took me nearly two years to find a way to manage the negative long term changes.

------(copied from another thread)-------

Back in late spring 2005 - June 7th to be exact - I bought some pills (meth bombs) off a shady dealer and ate one. I'd say it was the biggest mistake of my life.

I began having some very scary symptoms. Long story short, I thought I was having a heart attack. Thankfully I was wrong according to the test results/doctor who treated me. It was diagnosed as my first ever panic attack. I believe they game me Ativan (Lorazepam) to calm me down and kept watch for a few hours, then I was discharged. I actually felt pretty good at this point, but tired (most likely from the benzo, and also I was coming down).

Since it was late, I decided to go to sleep. The next morning, I will never forget. I woke up 12 hours later.

As I tried to get out of bed, I noticed the following symptoms:
- intense brain fog
- difficulty thinking/focusing
- short-term memory issues
- my extremities were tingling at random
- felt like I was carrying something really heavy on my shoulders
- muscles began to ache like I had the flu
- felt depressed, but also anxious
- odd headache/dizziness

As time went by, the symptoms did not improve. Days turned into weeks, months, years.

October 5th, 2005 (4 months later) - I saw a shrink for the first time as the symptoms weren't improving. I was honest with him about everything, every detail, because I was desperate to get back to feeling normal.

For the next 12 months, I was a lab rat. I lost count how many different psychiatric medications - consisting of every non-addictive class other than MAOIs - I was put on. I had been on several different SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, Neuroleptics, and some other atypical ones such as Trazodone.

Then I was put a combination of Wellbutrin XL 300mg OD + Xanax 0.5mg TID exactly a year after first seeing him. About a week after I started taking this combo, I began to notice the symptoms lessening in intensity and severity. By the beginning of the following year (2007) I was back to normal.

So it took me 19 months to get back to feeling normal (by way of a band-aid effect from Rx drugs).

Later that year in mid July, I rolled again for the first time since the previous devastatingly bad trip. I was really worried the symptoms would come back, but they didn't, at all.

Nowadays, I never roll anymore without testing my pills/powder. I was a fool to not bother with it back in 2005 and it nearly permanently ruined my life.

---------------------------------------

Now I dunno what that pill did to you, but I bet you're wishing you could go back in time and undo taking it, just like I've wished over and over that I could go back to June 6th, 2005 and not have bought those damn meth bombs.

This might be a dumb question, but have you tried to seek medical attention for what happened to you at the age of 16? If you have and all tests came back normal, have you tried to do some research regarding your symptoms?

I'm sincerely sorry to hear about this because I've been there, still somewhat there (some mild residual effects from time to time 8 years later). I was literally mocked by doctors because they couldn't find any objective medical evidence (medical imaging, blood tests, etc. all came back normal), and a couple of them actually said to me that they were convinced that I was malingering.

I really do hope that in time you will recover. I mean that. Feel free to PM me if you ever need someone to talk to about your health in relation to what happened when you were 16.

I offer you this because I remember when I was in a similar position back in late 2005 to late 2006 and how everyone who I told about how I was feeling could not relate. I remember being told over and over again that "no I've never felt those symptoms before, don't know what you mean." And it was incredibly depressing that there was no one there who (even partly) what I was going through at a time when I needed that support. And I've told others (and I'll tell you the same) - no one should have to live like that, or rather to suffer like that. So again, if you ever are feeling really shitty due to what happened to you 3 years ago and you really need someone to talk to about it, someone who may be able to related - I'll be here if you need me.

im not pleased at all that molly is mainstream now. its the end of an era now molly will be laced with all sorts of bullshit chems just like pressed caps are now. dont get me wrong i knew molly was cut with inert compounds but 3 or four years prior id buy mdma and new it was just that mdma not once did i buy it back then was it ever something else. i bought molly because i wanted the mdma experience not pressed caps and now it looks like that's going down the tube

I used to love the pills I got back in 2000. Seriously potent and amazing experiences. I tried molly two years ago...or so called molly a few times. It was very inconsistent. Its funny that it is becoming so mainstream. I used to hear a lot of the younger cooks and servers talking about it at work in such a rever ant manner. I wish they could all try just one of the thumbs up pills, or star of Davids I used to get to go partying.

Oh they def though, i know what youre talking about. What i meant is the kids listenin and going to theyre shows prob dont have those kinds of contacts, and are probably poppin all kinds of shit. All ofthis would all be easier if MDMA was legal. And honestly i think it shouldnt be used by immature youngsters like i was at 16 because it doesnt end up well.
I tested my pills most of the time, but even with non adulterated mdma i always had this depressive and angry feeling for days after....Dude im in the same boat with weed and meth. I used to smoke loads of weed, now a puff makes go into a panic state that lasts for days. FUcking sucks. And meth last time i did some i ate half my friends xanax stash in an attempt to bing down the anxietylol. Only stim tht works for me is coke at the moment...

I will respond to that last part of your message in a PM if you dont mind to not derail the thread too much. Thank you for bringing it up, its nice to share experiences with somebody who has been in the same boat as you. I aprreciate it

I find that good, pure 84% molly is actually making a comeback of recent, just not in the form of pills. Been seeing some quality shards in the past year or so. Marquis testing went to dark purple-near black awfully quick. Just gotta know where to look.

From 2006 to 2011 was dry as hell though (2009 being the worst year on record).

This article is so sad, bring back the floods of lsd. Much better than this crap.

To each his own. The only time I enjoyed LSD was when I was candyflipping.

unfortunately i know OF (i dont know these people personally, i just have people telling yeah people are actually trying to be their own pill maker and its just like what, theyre 16, etc) some people who try to make their own pills and sell it. and yes theyre young, teenagers, where i live the rave and "event" lifestyle is prominent so lots of kids are popping pills they get from well, anywhere. i will say..a death has occured (fake 2c-i) as recently and its very tragic. :( the only people i know who im positive of getting actual molly (even then its still questionable), are the young adults (ages 20-25) probably why some people are getting all these upsetting symptoms that go away, most doctors dont really study these drugs and know their exact effects, nor will they know what do with tainted pills, because there are so many different possibilities dealing with tainted substances. but hopefully anyone who has dealt with a bad pill or experience will be able to get their good health back.

also, i keep reading mdma is considered a neurotoxin, is that true?

I agree, it fucking sucks. Smoking a bowl after work used to be my way of unwinding. I ended up switching to opioids, and my body is now physically dependent on the shit.

And meth last time i did some i ate half my friends xanax stash in an attempt to bing down the anxietylol. Only stim tht works for me is coke at the moment...

Funny you mention that because I'm the same way, sort of. I can't do meth anymore either, but blow, methylphenidate and low dose dextroamphetamine is okay.

I will respond to that last part of your message in a PM if you dont mind to not derail the thread too much. Thank you for bringing it up, its nice to share experiences with somebody who has been in the same boat as you. I aprreciate it

Anytime :)

also, i keep reading mdma is considered a neurotoxin, is that true?

Depends on who you ask.

I believe that it can be under the right conditions, such as:

- Popping several in one night in an attempt to chase the high.
- Using too frequently (not allowing the depleted serotonin enough time to regenerate).
- Dancing in a hot/humid environment without taking breaks.
- Mixing with other serotonergic or dopaminergic drugs, such as MDA, meth, etc.

That's all that comes to mind for now.

Did you know that ethanol (booze) is a neurotoxin?
