The deaths of seven young people in the west of Scotland are linked to a batch of fake ecstasy drugs, Police Scotland has confirmed.

An 18-year-old woman from Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire died on Tuesday morning after taking the tablets.

Six others from Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Ayrshire have died during the past two months after taking pills with a Rolex crown stamped on them.

It is understood the pills contain a dangerous chemical called PMA.

It is known to cause extremely high temperatures, hallucinations and convulsions.

This is so crazy.

Everyone who knows where these pills are coming from should band together and sniff out the main source. I still think there's something more sinister afoot than profit-seeking.
 
No top dealers are going to want these pills anywhere near them now, after the deaths the Police just go up the supply chain. They will be gone soon enough, no more will come in but I think the ones all ready here will cause some damage.

There was also PMA green apples around Ireland causing deaths.


A Europol report into drugs is linking the PMA to coming from Eastern european crime syndicates. It resulted in the arrest of several chemists (All from Poland) who were producing the drug in 2000.
 
If only there was a way to make sure people were getting the purest stuff possible by putting in some kind of regulation...

I can't really see why any illicit chemist would be producing PMA. It isn't like its far easier to make than MDMA, and it's known to be toxic, often lethally so. Why would the illicit chemist, motivated by profit, make something that kills their customers. Most people selling a product like to have repeat customers, killing off your clientele is bad business. This might be getting into conspiracy theory territory, but it reminds me of when the US government distributed toxic alcohol during prohibition: http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/02/27/2040251/us-government-poisoned-alcohol-during-prohibition I wouldn't be too shocked if this was happening again. The only people I can see benefiting from the distribution of PMA laced pills is those who profit from the demonization and prohibition of drugs: police, the DEA/FBI/ATF, pharmaceutical companies, alcohol & tobacco companies, scaremongering politicians, private prisons, lawyers who try and defend drug cases, even the rehabilitation/treatment industry.

How would they profit from it in a different continent?

Anyway, this is the Europol report about the PMA coming from Polish and Lithuanian gangs, PMA is also produced when a BMK substitute is used (precursor) for producing amphetamines, and PMA/PMMA is the outcome.

Sorry, replace DEA/ATF/FBI with the UK and other european countries' drug enforcement agencies. All countries law enforcement agencies have their budgets filled with funds for enforcing prohibition. Also, that's interesting that there is an actual chemistry-based reason for PMA production, but I still don't see how making a drug that kills its users is good for business. I'm not saying that this wasn't just some scumbag chemist who was out to make a buck selling dangerous pills, but it just seems fishy to me. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but as you can see from the article I linked, there is a precedent for governments purposely tainting substances to enforce prohibition. I'm probably wrong, but whenever I see cases of seemingly unnecessarily dangerous cuts making the rounds this historical precedent from alcohol prohibition springs to mind.

Are the PMA/PMMA tests good enough to trust my life to? The outbreak in Canada seems to be over, I haven't been following any test results, just based on people here not dying anymore. The black market has historically self regulated when the cops show more interest in their trade after a few deaths. Here I am sure the cops just told the gangsters to find the source and stop it. Eastern European crime groups may be greedy enough to just not care. Any sort of gentleman's agreements that the law had with traditional organized crime is probably ignored by the new kids on the block.
PMA is terrifying it made me quit MDMA.
