Lovely if shatteringly exhaustiung hike in the Lake District today, i forgot im not very fit these days and walked for miles and miles, and then had to go all the way back again. Doh ! Took loads of pics, this is one of may faves. Hadnt been fond of the LD until today, my own fault id just done the famous walks that are packed with hundreds of people which defeats the object of going to the countryside for me. Found an off the beaten path route and just went wherever the raod took me. I got this far.

Hi all!

Not been around for probably nearing a year, maybe more! How is everyone?

Hi Glitched! How are you? There have been a few changes since you were here last. Unfortunately there have been some deaths recently :\ Some members have just pissed off to do other things (Spade for example), and we have some lovely new members too.

you shouldnt add meat of any sort to compost, attracts rats and pests

im sure you have some posh coffee knocking about. save the used grounds and utilise them for a good alternative source of nitrogen. compost down first, wont take long to breakdown

I don't add meat or fish to our compost.

i BURY big boxes of fish waste, guts, heads and skeletons in different spots round the allotment. Same with seaweed, i don't add it to the compost, just bury sacks of it, the more mussel shells attached the better. My mate did bury some fish waste too shallow a couple of years ago and some animal had dug it up and scattered it round neighbouring alllotments the next day.

Of course I have posh coffee knocking around. We use the coffee grounds on all our flowers and herbs in pots at the house, they make a reasonable effective slug repellant.

Takes about 12 months to break down completely.

I've recently just added loads of fish head and guts to my composter AND about a foot underneath where I planted my leeks. What else are the mice gonna eat, hrm? [edit] and that's in a domestic garden and not on an allotment.
