Im hooked on codein! All started when i popped my back, doc gave me 30/500 co codamol. 9 months later my back is ok, but can i the hell stop the codein!

I still get regular repeat scripts, for the 30/500 just getting really worried about my liver. Any help? im taking 10/15 tablets a day.:?

Yeah, definitely look into cold water extraction or your liver's going to end up in such a state that the addiction will be the least of your worries.

Anyway, since codeine is the weakest commonly available opiate/opioid there is, you really only have 2 options with respect to giving up, both of which will just require some straight-up willpower. You can either taper off and avoid the negative effects you might experience from withdrawal or you can just go cold turkey. There aren't any fancy replacement options or anything for coming off of codeine.

Personally, I did massive codeine and dihydrocodeine cold water extractions (CWEs) every day for a year and I don't think I ever really got strongly physiologically addicted, although I did feel a psychological need to keep taking the drug. Fortunately, I couldn't obtain the huge amount of tablets I needed to keep up with my sky high tolerance so I was naturally forced out of it (plus, I'd started to hate the high by that point; it began to just make me feel extremely irritable with no euphoria whatsoever). Either way, the withdrawal I experienced was minimal -- just be glad it's not tramadol, hell of a drug to withdraw from as far as prescription drugs go.

Good luck. :)

Your prob like the rest of us who think your in control, won't happen to me, it's just codeine. Trust me STOP abusing opiates with this opiate, do not move on to other family members such as hydro, Oxy. Once hooked on opiates/opioids you will suffer greatly from times in which you have no access to them(which will happen), and you will start spending all your money on maintaining.

Please don't end up like me.

Ahhh, good ol' codeine: wait until a half gram of the stuff won't even make you itchy so you look elsewhere - "I'm not addicted to codeine, so morphine won't be a problem (insert list of drugs) ------> soul-wrenching opiate addiction).

To be fair to him though, he's quite wise to admit that he's addicted at this stage. There is hope for this one!

I was being prescribed Tylenol 3s pretty consistently for several months. got to the point were I couldn't feel anything even if I took 8 or 9 at a time. CWE's tasted so nasty I threw up once and wasted it all. I went to my Dr and said that the T3s weren't working anymore, thinking he would up me to hydro or oxy. WRONG. be put me on NSAIDS. now I have nada and feel like total hell. so the point of my story is to 2nd the statement that startedhydro made. you will one day not be able to get them!!! and it will suck. so taper down while you still can get them.

You do know codeine is metabolized to morphine, right?? And at the dosage you are taking in it, it's basically like taking morphine. Take it from me, stop. At least you can't IV codeine...

Thanks for your comments, totally naive about all this, i just thought "it's only cocodamol" did not know it turns into morphine! im really in shit here! doc has also given me diazapam, as i thought i was anxious, and yea i was because i had run out of co cods, took some and that feeling that all is well returned.

Yeah it isn't going to be a cakewalk...but you have only been using for nine months. You are standing on a fence right now. One side is a beautiful garden followed by a desert...the other side is your yard. Dude just stay in your yard. Yeah the garden is really nice at first but once you hit that desert..its really freaking hard to go back to just standing in your yard again..

Manboychef.............thank you.............what a way to put it! freaking spot on dude!

As they have all said, try and stop now.
9 months is 9 months, don't make the mistake I did and turned it into 9 years.

Try taking 1000mg Paracetamol/APAP and 400mg Ibuprofen as a dose instead of the codeine.
It'll will surprise you at it's effectiveness, you just have to keep reminding yourself that you thought "hey this does help the pain without any codeine".
The last sentence is key.

Try it and good luck.

I'm on SMT because I didn't take the advice when I was at the crossroads you are at now. I've lost so much...well I can't say lost, more like I gave it away, to this addiction. Its been a year of solid therapy and hard work for me to stay straight.try everything to stop the pain without narcotic opiates. I know you have the strength within you.
