This always shocks me too... Though it shouldn't by now! There are good people being paid to do good work that is routinely contra-legislated.

Terrible news indeed for khat users, producers and retailers and also a sad day for civil liberties in the UK. Tried khat many years ago with some Somali friends and had a wonderfully enjoyable experience.
Does anybody know whether this ban has to be ratified by parliament, or does Teresa May have dictatorial powers in this arena. Proponents of the ban say that it was an election pledge by the Tories - but the Tories are not in government alone - they're in coalition with the slightly less reactionary Liberal Democrats. Is there still time to oppose this ban? If it does not need to be ratified by parliament, when does it come into effect.

The 'coalition' means nothing, the Lib Dems are nothing more than puppets. This will be banned and that's that. As for when I think the vile bitch mentioned as soon as possible. Probably sometime this month.
Hearing this shit makes me angry so much. Protecting vulnerable communities etc blah blah blah. If they were so concerned about people and my welfare then what the fuck are they doing on a Saturday night, where there is a high percentage of me and thousands of people being/are being assaulted by some drunken twat. Concern for people's welfare right enough.
What next on front? Tea? Coffee? Actually is there not talk of banning energy drinks with caffeinie in them? May as well just ban everything.

you could always move to Yemen or Ethiopia
I long dreamed of travelling to Yemen. I read up on it widely and was in contact with the author Kevin Rushby for some time who has written a book on qat and the Yemen (Eating the flowers of paradise). Alas, chance seemed missed for now. Girlfriend was never keen, has a thing about Islams treatment of women, and now the country seems to have split back into a three or four way civil war again. Everyone owns an AK-47 even when they're not fighting so it's an, er, interesting place. But it's stunningly beautiful, look at pictures of Sana'a. And the whole country is based around the consumption of qat. I would love to go.
And funny you should mention Ethiopia. I have only recently discovered its not the barren landscape of Bob Geldof and Live Aid but one of the plushest, greenest, most beautiful places in Africa. It has mountains, greenery, desert, the lot. And meant to be as friendly as fuck. I met a single woman once travelling round the world. We swapped favourite places. Hers was Ethiopia. At the time, it did not compute. It does now. I was wrong. Yeah, love to go to Ethiopia.
And as the place we were heading has just been hit by a 6.1 earthquake (western Sumatra) then maybe, just maybe, Ethiopia is a possibility.

The Newsnight bit I watched on legal hoghs last night was predictably shit, but made some good points.
This was aparticularly shit one though....
One govt official came on screen to say that some of these new legal highs had killed (mephedrone was included as a killer, giving the example of a user , of other drugs too, who topped himself), and others had caused a "number of" hospital admissions so they had to be banned.
A" number of" hospital admissions? A handful of deaths, many of which were unproven to be as a direct result of the drug being blamed.?
How can they sit there and claim the MoDA is about protecting people from harm while just completely ignoring the alcohol and tobacco situation, hospitals overflowing with people suffering through using those drugs.
I know anyone readingthis probably already thinks the same and has probably stated it here before too, but it really fucks me off.
And the fact it is so rarely questioned that the MoDA is supposedly based on relative harms caused by various drugs.

Anyone know how long khat seeds remain viable for? Got some hanging about somewhere actually, this thread just reminded me. Clean forgot about those. Time to get planting methinks.
Not so sure I'd fancy khat in situ (that is, in the midst of somalia/yemen/ethiopia, etc.)...the thought of doing a moderately strong amphetamine-like stimulant whilst slowly baking to death in an oven (or whilst peg-legging it from bloodthirsty pirates
) isn't all that tempting.
I quite fancy some AMT actually, at the moment, but I'm putting it off for that reason...its just sunny (haha) northwest england, and I'm still sweating fucking bullets in this damn heat. Too much right now...wait for night time methinks, I'd just about die, if I got twacked in the middle east, at least, if my experience of a turkish climate in summer is anything to go by.
As for theresa may....what the fuck is her problem? she seems to get off on jackbooting on people's freedom. Sourfaced old bitch needs tying to a tree and shooting at dawn IMHO.
