Khat to be banned

The herbal stimulant drug khat is to be banned, the BBC understands.

The decision goes against the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), the government's official advisory body.

So something I have been doing for 20 years, causing harm to nobody and paying my taxes along the way, is now to be illegal. Theresa May has criminalized another plant.

Khat has been a major part of my life. My current relationship, 19 years strong, was started on a khat session. But for the Somalis, Yemenis et al this is 400 years of culture down the pan. It is no exaggeration to say that khat plays a more important role in their whole daily lives than coffee or tea does to us.

I'm so angry I can't think to type.

The only way to change things is to shoot those who arrange things.
 
There's a large Somali community a few blocks from me, i asked around in all their shops, but just drew blanks. I'll never know what ive missed, unless i try the thingemejig internet place where they sell everything..

A hundred or so Somalis were involved in a riot in Moss Side a couple of years ago. If the police start raiding them for Khat all hell is gonna break loose there.

Don't bother with plush avenues. Khat has to be super fresh. Not lost in cyberspace. Anyone selling khat on SR is ripping people off.
 
No and if you could it wouldn't be the same as khat. Khat is far more than cathinone. Many of its psycho-active properties are yet to be identified.

Hey SHM (hope you still love me) - You can chew coca leaves and get a high / you can mess around with it and get a different high - your still high from coca leaves? Is one version 'better' than the other?
 
People already equate khat (erroneously) with simple cathinone. 'Cat'. And I can assure you there is an incredible qualitative difference between khat and Cat.

A coke analogy isn't the same, you are only messing with one fundamental psycho-active substance. (Khat has many). But besides that, yes pure cocaine hydrochloride is an infinitely greater version of coke than coca tea. You'll never get it that way around with khat. You cannot tamper with the khat plant in any 'artificial' way and improve it.

Khat or qat, is Arabic for wonderful btw. And it's wonderful in many different ways. Know of any other stimulant that can produce a classic opiate nod (when brewed as a tea)? How does it do that eh? And if science doesn't know (it doesn't) then how are you to replicate it?

I've never tried Khat but this really makes my blood boil. What fucking harm has this plant caused anyone?
 
They can't even get their story straight.

The UK's decision to (ban khat) is based on security and international considerations,

The Home Office said the ban was intended to "protect vulnerable members of our communities" and would be brought in at the "earliest possible opportunity".

I'm certainly not saying Khat is a simple methcathione at all. If I was to think about my post in more depth then I should have said - the experience you get from pure Khat can not be replicated. From that - the experience you can get from Khat after an alcohol extraction is still really pleasant :).

Paan - is the other one, red globs of spit all over the place - maybe with a bit of tweaking people could make it a bit more 'non user' friendly' ?
 
I don't think there is any methcathinone is khat is there? I thought cathinone was the main substance involved along with cathine.

I thought methcathinone was a human intervention.
