Nth Ireland - Drug link probed after eight deaths - Ecstasy

Police are investigating whether eight sudden deaths in Northern Ireland are linked to drugs.

The fatalities happened in Greater Belfast and the North West area and involved victims aged in their 20s and 30s.

Police warned people to be particularly careful if they are offered green-coloured tablets with a logo of a crown or castle on them. Unmarked white pills, which have not yet been tested but may be ecstasy, could also be involved in the deaths along with alcohol, the region's chief medical officer said.

Owen O'Neill, a drugs and alcohol expert from the Public Health Agency, said: "It is absolutely tragic for the families concerned."

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said: "We are looking at eight sudden deaths, seven of which are in the Greater Belfast area and one is in the North West area, however it should be noted that we cannot confirm at this stage that all are drugs-related."

She warned people not to take controlled drugs or prescription medications which are not intended for them and not to mix them with alcohol. "The consequences of ignoring this advice are very dangerous and potentially life-threatening," she said.

Chief medical officer Dr Michael McBride has written to various health professionals alerting them to the deaths.

His letter said while officials did not have any information on what the substance is, or whether it is actually related to the incidents, they would refer clinicians and managers to a previous alert about Paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA), a Class A drug.

"It should be noted that PMA is a stimulant drug similar to ecstasy, but these particular tablets do not have the same effect or take effect as quickly as an ecstasy tablet," he said.

"Users may believe they have taken a 'weak' ecstasy tablet, when they have actually taken a tablet containing this highly toxic substance. They may then be tempted to take more tablets to achieve the desired effect, increasing the risk of a potentially fatal overdose".

8 people dead from pills in the North of Ireland

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-23110140

A police investigation in to the sudden deaths of eight people in Northern Ireland has prompted safety calls by drug addiction workers.

Those who died were all in their 20s and 30s, and police are investigating whether the deaths are linked to drugs.

The chief medical officer said those who took the green-coloured tablets may have believed they were taking ecstasy.

Staff who work with addicts have appealed to people to safely dispose of any tablets they are suspicious of.

The deaths have all occurred recently, with seven taking place in Belfast and one in the north west of Northern Ireland.

'Absolutely distraught'
The police have advised people to be particularly careful if they are offered green-coloured tablets with a crown or castle logo on them.

Officers are waiting for the results of forensic tests.

A number of community workers have told the BBC many of the deaths have taken place in unionist areas, including several in east Belfast.

Michael Copeland, an Ulster Unionist representative in east Belfast, said his daughter personally knew two of the young men who had died recently.

"She would have known them through school and through going to the places young people go - the clubs, bars and discos - and she was absolutely distraught because neither of them were people she would have associated with the drugs scene or with taking drugs.

He added: "It poses very serious questions for those involved in this illegal trade, who make quite a lot of money from what I imagine, and for those who are charged by society with making sure that they don't do it, i.e., the police, the justice agencies and a whole raft of other people."

Makes me wanna throw up when I read about so many deaths, all young adults, all thanks to some greedy scumbag(s) who couldn't care less if it means easy blood money.

There's no question in my mind that PMA adulterated pills have caused far more harm to "ecstasy's" already fragile and controversial reputation than anything else that's been found in them.

No single drug linked to eight deaths

Belfast Telegraph

By Michael McHugh – 05 July 2013

No single killer drug was responsible for the deaths of eight people in Northern Ireland over the last four weeks, police have said. As investigations continue, the PSNI revealed that three people have been arrested and questioned over the deaths. They were detained in Belfast and the north west over a four-week period recently and have been released pending further inquiries but investigators are not making any connection between the deaths or between the arrests. Detective Chief Superintendent Roy McComb said: "There is no consistent individual drug that we are finding linking any of these deaths, no single bad pill out there killing people." People aged mainly in their 20s and 30s died and the PSNI is still awaiting the results of forensics tests.

Separately, the force has issued an alert about ecstasy tablets laced with a bulking chemical which can prove even more deadly because it could encourage abusers to take extra pills in the mistaken belief that they are weak.

How can the police even think that these deaths aren't linked...come on, every single person that died took the same tablets! How more conclusive can it be.

The tablets were tested and found with PMA and PMMA.

Saying the deaths aren't linked will make some (Stupid) people think the drugs are OK to take. It is plain and clear that these tabs killed each person - More are in hospital in a critical condition, a 10th death is suspected to be attributed to these but it isn't confirmed.

When I finally got to my partner was going to phone a abulance to take me to hospital because my body went into convuisions all night. I can't remember I thing' but I know now someone was looking out for that night with what I found out today with all these terrible deaths. Wonder if they tested them? Why people eat 6 pills is beyond me. If they were pma you'd probably be dead. There are loads of different chemicals and combinations that could make you ill.

You can order your own reagent test kits, make sure they have a reaction for pma. Everyone who uses mdxx or speed should have a test kit I rekon, stupid not to when there are so many dodgy pills.

Just seen the news on TV today, they said "at least 2 deaths were caused by ecstasy tablets" - Anyone with a brain knows that all these people died from the PMA / PMMA tablets - It's not a coincidence that they all died after taking the same tablets.

I don't know, but I have read in the Sunday World (Newspaper in Northern Ireland) that some of the UVF and UDA dealers have left the country because of this.

You a Derry man too Jackeh :) You in the city or county? Small world :)
