I’m ashamed of the fact that I’ve stuck my dick in a piss cup hundreds of times. I get tested for every drug under the sun, including alcohol, and foolishly, I still take pride in passing 99 percent of them over the past eight years—thought the hits I took on the few occasions I failed were real bad. The saddest part of those failures is the tests are laughably easy to beat. They’re completely fuckin’ worthless if you ask me. They’re just another money-making racket.

Turns out drug testing—which doesn’t effect just convicts but also your average working schlub who has to pee in a cup to get an $8-an-hour stockboy gig—is a multi-billion industry and is increasingly affecting everyday folks’ lives. Around 84 percent of American employers test their employees, but oddly enough, you won’t catch any bankers, traders, or hedge-fund fuckers getting randomly tested even though they’re the ones most likely to sniff rails and then do some dumb shit that ruins people’s lives. (You hear the one about the Washington Mutual manager who snorted meth daily?) The way I figure, it’s only a matter of time before drug testing becomes routine in schools too. Actually, the first piss test I actually failed was in prep school—I was kicked out as a result of smoking weed. Seems like a pretty harsh penalty, but that’s the rules, I guess. That was 1997, and I imagine this practice has become more frequent in the past 15 years.

It seems like they always pick on the people who are already down when it comes to intrusive nonsense like mandatory drug testing, so the criminals got it first. It’s becoming more apparent to me that this is a big fuckin’ hustle. These tests are all beatable. If you really want to catch someone, just give them a hair test every couple of months. You can’t beat that shit. But it’s part of the racket. They want to hit us with a test at least once a week so they can make that money from Medicaid.

It turns out one company even got busted recently for unnecessary drug testing, a scam that is obvious to even a fuckin’ duck. It’s a win-win for everyone except the taxpayer. These scumbag pharma companies manufacture these tests for next to nothing and make dumb money off them by charging Medicaid. By the way, none of us convicts actually pay to get tested for drugs. We’re all broke, so the government picks up the tab. I’m sure once the testing spreads to other sectors, somehow the taxpayers will get stuck with the bill under the presumption that testing the public is for the greater good.

I took my first drug test in 1981 and didn't even realize I took one. I thought I was taking a physical for the job. The morning of I did a small line of coke took one hit off a roach and ate a piece of bacon. My thought was "my blood sugar is gonna be crazy haha". I found out later that I failed a drug test and I didn't even know what the HR person was talking about. A few months later I read in High Times that this new "drug test" was going on and we should resist it or they could start testing for health conditions that could preclude us from getting jobs too. How prophetic!! High Times magazine called it in 1981.

I remember when I was on probation they would watch you piss through a mirror. I remember looking in the mirror and seeing the officer looking directly at me staring hard.

I said to him "you like that don't you bitch?" Its a good thing he was not my PO. My PO that time was a woman and she laughed about it when the other officer finally told her about what I said and told me not to do that again to which I reply "I think that man is a faggot." Once again she laughed.

I think its really degrading to pee in a cup, especially when you have a college education. Are they hiring you or your piss?

If the only way you can tell whether someone is using drugs is to test their urine, then it doesn't matter that they're using drugs.

I had been going to this therapist for a few months in a counseling center that also has a psychiatrist available. My mom caught wind of me using drugs again so she called the therapist to tell her. First of all I was not happy with her talking to my mother since that's a breach in confidentiality, but she defended herself by saying that she was only listening. I told her that listening still confirmed that I was a patient there which was information that I didn't want anybody to know. Anyway, she piss tested me and I passed, but she still felt the need to tell the psychiatrist and recommend that he lowered my valium dose due to my 'drug abuse.' When she told him her reasoning he pretty much laughed at her.

A few weeks later I went into my appointment and she acted all cool for the first 15 minutes, then bombarded me with questions about my drug use, saying she knew I used again that week because she spoke to my mother. I told her my mom's crazy and I was getting tired of having to deal with this. The thing with most places like this is that most people are mandated to go there, but I was going there voluntarily. She seemed to have forgotten that, and was telling me I needed to give another urine sample. She walked me over to the doctor since he was the only male there, and I told her that I didn't have to piss yet and it takes me a while to go and that I had work soon (all true) and when she got testy with me I basically told her I didn't have time for this shit anymore.

She then demanded that I show up a few days later, but I decided not to since neither of us trusted one another anymore so there was no point to my therapy sessions. She called me up to tell me I missed my appointment and I told her that's because I'm no longer seeking treatment through that facility. It was such nonsense being drug tested because my mom called them up saying I was using drugs. It wasn't even a substance abuse treatment specialist or anything, just regular therapy. When the guy there drug tested me he was saying not to worry and just relax and go, and I was like yea no shit, I don't even have to do this and if I fail and you guys try to give me shit about it I'm just not coming back. I past though and apparently that wasn't good enough for them, so I just saw the doctor for one last time and went elsewhere.

What a joke that was. Imagine going to a therapist on your own and having them drug test you because someone called them up saying they found a few morphine pills in your pack of cigarettes. But they're so used to people being court mandated to go there that they feel like they can force you to do things because of the consequences, but I didn't have any consequences. I explained that it was my time I was paying for, and that I went there to deal with certain issues, and even if I was using drugs that it wasn't something I was wishing to discuss. I spent a month going back and forth with the therapist about drug use, then I finally told her that the sessions were hurting me more than helping me, so to leave me be. She still tried to get the last word in by telling the psychiatrist there that my mom said I was still using, but he still wrote me my usual scripts after I told him I wasn't using.

It was a bizarre situation, voluntarily going to a therapist and being treated like a criminal or something. She was saying that if I failed the drug test she was going to refer me to substance abuse counseling, and I just told her I wasn't going to go. When I refused the second test and she told me I had to go to substance abuse counseling I stuck to my guns and just walked out, and went down the block to another therapist to start off fresh.

I'm still contemplating following up with at least a formal complaint about her divulging personal information to my mother when I told her not to speak to her and that I'm an adult so she has no right to. Even though she claimed to have just listened to her I told her I didn't even want her doing that, but my mother told me stuff that only my therapist knew so she definitely did more than just listen. So much for confidentiality.

^ This world is so wrong. I really, really hope it is somewhat fixed for my children's sake.

I read so much about America, and the more I do, the more I hate it. I'm sorry if this offends you or anyone else, but seriously. What has happened to the country that once used to have a constitution?

Its pretty much created a crack epidemic where I live. No one smokes weed because it's so easy to test for. I know a guy who works in the oilfield whose boss said he was concerned he wasn't smoking enough crack. Binge drinking and crack don't make the work place safer than weed would. And smoking weed on your free time is no one's business but yours. It doesn't effect safety, smoking weed or doing drugs at home after work.

That was an aggregious violation of HIPAA laws and you can get that office fined quite heftily if you were to follow through.

We need to weed-out these people. I'd wager dollars to donuts she was on more drugs than you had been at the time.

Yeah tommyboy you shpuld have sued the shit out of that place. I am going to school to be a social worker and she broke rules we learned in the intro class.

I am not familiar with the regulations over with you guys, but it raises they question what is it about Addiction Treatment that we often encounter these types of incidents.

Even for professions like psychotherapists here in Ireland addiction services have the lowest educational requirements of all other services, yes they have to be accredited or licenced but only to minimum requirements. I have encountered that attitude of I only listened I did not say or confirm anything, you would not see it in any other services.

What is it about addiction treatment that whilst there are some great professionals out there, it also attracts those who seem to live for a sense of having power over someone.

You are correct, and my theory is that many (most?) addiction professionals are former drug users who joined AA/NA and were transformed into bigots (drug prejudice being just as pernicious as racial prejudice) who consider drug users "powerless" and therefore bereft of human agency.

If you own a dog, you recognize that you have power over the dog because you consider its species beneath you. The same is generally true for the recovery culture.

(generally true, not always true)

In my experience yes there is something to that point. I'm a health care professional and my work does involve working alongside treatment staff in certain cases, and some of my friends work in addiction treatment. I know the type you mention and over here in Ireland we see a lot of that with what I call NA Nazi's. It worked for them so it has to work for everyone.

Thankfully because of the way treatment is organised over here, those type of people generally don't work in the methadone services as MMT goes against the principles of recovery.

I know a few people who work in treatment and they have a history of addiction, however, the difference is they keep that to themselves. They don't use it as a selling point in trying to establish a relationship or show that they are knowledgeable on the issue of addiction.

However, there are worst things than the recovering professional, there is the moral crusader who believes that it is a matter of education. People just need to learn certain skills so that they can live without drugs, sadly these new skills always seem to fit in with their moral viewpoints and do not allow people to be subjective. Live just does not work that way.

Anyway that was a bit of a ramble, I hope it makes some sense!!!

When I was younger my parents put me in counseling for my reckless use of pot....hehe. yep very reckless. He told me I could talk freely. So I did the first few times...my parents used what I said in counseling against me in arguments. I realized he was telling them everything that was said in the office. Needless to say I just started telling him what he wanted to hear in the counseling. Its a sha,me as I found talking to someone at that point very helpful.
