solid dosing

Greetings,

This is my first post - I hope I meet the local standards.

Suppose someone has
  • some powdered chemical that is dosed in the milligram range
  • a "milligram" scale that measures to .001, but is really only accurate to within a couple milligrams (so isn't really adequate for measuing single dry doses)
  • propylene glycol

This system allows from pretty accurate liquid dosing - just weigh the powder in bulk, dissolve at a fixed ratio, and measure liquid doses. You can even do so into a gel cap for immediate consumption if you dislike the PG taste, but the PG will eventually dissolve the capsule.

I'm looking for a longer-term more portable dosing scheme. Here are two ideas I've seen or dreamt up.
  • dissolve in a volatile liquid instead of PG, then measure doses and let the solvent dry. This leaves the chemical on some medium that your carry, stuff into a gel camp, etc.
  • find a bulking agent that works with PG in the sense that you can combine the dosed PG with the agent and stuff the result in to a pill. Of course, the agent has to be benign and the PG should somehow not dissolve the capsule.

I'm open to comments on these ideas or, better, other more brilliant ideas to sole the problem.

Synopsis: Have potent powdered chemical, need small consistent doses in pill-ish form.

All comments are greatly welcomed!

maybe you could take a liquid dose and pipette it onto a sugar cube or a cracker or something? maybe use a syringe to suck out the contents of a tussin cough gel and re-inject them with a liquid dose? lol. one problem is, i don't think there is a PEG out there volatile enough to evaporate at anything near room temperature. look at the BP of ethylene glycol itself. are there any volatile solvents in which your compound is even soluble in? i mean, i'm taking your question to basically be, how to manufacture [benzo?] pills at home with nothing more than a dime store milligram scale (i love mine) and a jury-rigged volumetric flask? pharmaceutical companies have figured it out but obviously they have a lot more money to spend on equipment. why not just keep the solution for home use and pick up a few strips of etilaam for when you're on the go?

have u tried adding gelatin powder to the caps before dropping in the propylene glycol/ mix?

Nope. My fear is that the GP will dissolve the gelatin powder before proceeding to do so to the capsule, but perhaps it depends on the amount of powdered stuff one adds.

Interesting idea though, thanks.

I rather like the tussin idea, but it seems a bit of a waste (though do they sell empty liqui-gel-style caps somewhere? - I cound't find them).

I had thought of putting it on food, but I like the idea of it being in pill form so as not to be as tempting to random people (depends on the circumstances, I suppose:) ). A dosed blotter stuffed into a pill is one thing that came to mind.

Speaking of blotter and the volatility issues you raised, I could always use a more volatile solvent such as an alcohol if I let it all evaporate from the the medium. I just happen to have PG around to do the volumetric measuring, so I wondered what my options were there.
