Questions about peyote

Hi. I'm considering trying peyote at some point but I'm confused about the cactus. Am I right in thinking that you buy a cactus and then peyote buttons grow from it? Or is the peyote button the cactus itself? I know that you'd need to eat between 6 -12 buttons. If the button is the cactus, that seems like quite a large volume (unless the cacti are smaller than I'm imagining). I've heard that peyote's very expensive which would make sense if each button was a cactus. As you can probably tell, I'm pretty confused.

If you look at the anatomy of this cactus, the portion that grows above ground is basically the button, but they can form clusters. It is like a guy digging himself entirely into the ground with only his face surfacing. And you only eat the buttons (his face, lol) yes, the portion above ground, not the relatively massive root. Most goodies are just under the waxy and transparent top skin layer (epidermis), in the green endodermis / cambrium (not sure about the correct name). But the flesh also contains alkaloids, just less.

Growing these takes like 10 years or more... imagine keeping a plant (even though it is a cactus) alive for that long and staying interested and patient! Surely a nice pet project, but if you really want to try cactus, it is more realistic to try and find faster growing column cactuses that contain similar alkaloids. Like San Pedro, Peruvian Torch or Bridgesii.

Okay. The button itself is the cactus. This generally means that yes, you will be eating a lot of seriously foul-tasting, slimy mess. Thus the buttons are usually dried. However, if you can source live buttons, please try to ensure they are not wild-harvested, as peyote is now endangered from over-harvesting in the wild. Also, if you can only get live and not dried, please read up on safe methods of dessication. Otherwise you may get mold growing on it, which could be poisonous

EDIT: oops, preempted!

Hmmm.. It seems very expensive and almost too much trouble. I may just try to get hold of some mescaline instead if possible.
