Atlantis wasn’t built in a day: The web’s newest black market has $520,800 in sales and counting

Atlantis, the third largest and newest black market on the deep web, has more than doubled business in the past six weeks. Three months after launch, they’ve processed a total of $520,800 worth of orders. The founders, vendors and customers would like much, much more.

If the online drug trade is theater, Silk Road is standing center stage. The web’s most successful and well known black market is making millions of dollars worth of sales every month while the media spotlight keeps the public’s attention on it.

Black Market Reloaded is off in the relative shade of stage right, growing steadily, processing around one million dollars in sales per month and obviously happy to not be paid quite so much attention as Silk Road is.

With few exceptions, the stage looked basically this way for nearly two years until the recent emergence of a new player.

Atlantis Marketplace‘s March 2013 entrance was dramatic. The announcement that a new black market had been launched was made on numerous forums, notably including Silk Road’s newbie subforum.

The tone often veered toward antagonistic. Silk Road user masterblaster wrote this about Atlantis:

Faster,
Cheaper,
Functional
Stable

So long road, we wont miss your 2 minutes page loads and frequent crashes. Hey, why are you all reading this, is the road down again?

Some users wondered if Atlantis had astroturfed support on Silk Road’s forums. Others wondered if Atlantis could compete with the giants already on stage. Most troubling of all, many wondered if Atlantis was a sleek new honeypot created by law enforcement with the goal of of luring customers and vendors to their undoing.

Bluelight, I love you dearly, I do, but if you're going to copy and paste my entire article and hotlink my images and put it on your site, put the url up top or something. I need those clicks, darling, I need em bad. I'd like it if someone read this article to easily be able to read another thing I wrote and then maybe become a fan and then I can pay to eat sandwiches and things of that nature. Ad money! Making a living. That sort of thing.

A truncated url at the bottom of the entire thing just doesn't get the same attention from readers.

Glad you liked the article though!

If you think about it, getting drugs from websites like these is safer then getting them off the streets. You know what your getting if get your gear from a trusted vendor. If it was legal i believe this would be a convenient and safe way to purchase drugs.

Yeah as the article asks this question -

The big question is, just how much of the world’s drug trade can shift to the internet?

It makes you wonder how the shift will be in the future, as more and more people use these kinds of sites. What are there, 3 now? With massive profits and all sorts of drugs all over the world. Yeah maybe alot of the drugs are more expensive, but you are getting it delivered and the prices might go down in the future as more and more people use them for selling and buying drugs.

very well written article

I can't tell if I should be flattered or offended to be an uber-geek =D.

You beat me to it! People have been doing this online for a long time. Even in the pre web newsgroups days stuff was being sold online. Long before bitcoins people used to pay with western union, or blank money order or e-gold whatever that was. There were lots of people who swore by hushmail, but the company just handed over e-mails when the cops asked, I am sure their encryption was great though. There are people who have been doing this 15 years and don't even want new customers.
If anything the deep web way is an improvement IMO, as long as bitcoins don't fail. The one thing I will say is it remains easy to be a legit vendor for a period time and then go bad. Stop sending stuff out at the height of your popularity and rip off everyone, it takes about two weeks until people notice orders are not showing up, I have seen people who were legit just cash out like a retirement plan. Be very careful online. In just watching the game over many years I have heard of very very few customers getting busted though, that could change with all the new attention SR has brought.

I wrote something about that a little while ago called The freest: The beginnings of online drug culture. If you know a lot about that time period, you should read it and let me know what you think. There are large gaps in my knowledge and I'd love to chat about it!

Great article thx for posting. Ill even click thru, just to help the writer get a sandwich or whatever:-)

If anyone asks...

I did not write that I agree that I think it's probably safer to buy online nowadays. Nor did I say anything about the fact that it's quite easy to get started.

I was not here. And I'm not smiling.

Good day
