Vermont has become the 17th state to get rid of criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a measure into law Thursday.

The law replaces criminal penalties with civil fines similar to a traffic ticket for possession of up to an ounce of marijuana or five grams of hashish.

The law also treats possession of such amounts of marijuana by people under age 21 the same as underage possession of alcohol, including referral to court diversion for a first offense, potential civil penalties and/or license suspension, and criminal penalties for a third violation.

Previously, possession of up to 2 ounces of marijuana was punishable by a six- to 24-month jail term.

Way to go VT! So nice to see this progress. What I wonder is not when this state or that state will do such n such but what about our federal govt. They can be so pig headed sometimes. Like imagine,IMAGINE if IFIF IF it is a big IF i know, all fifty...one? States decrim pot but the stupid pig headed feds dont pay no attention to it? How ass backwards would that be? Well sorry for the rant but back to VT its great news really. I always considered it a liberal state anyway, mostly, except for the cows. All those damn conservative cows:-) i mean cmon like benn jerrys is from there right? :-):-):-)

If all 50 states decriminalize marijuana then that means the republicans have come up with some ingenious plan to make money out of it, which would mean that the president would eventually feel financially compelled to decriminalize it at a federal level as well.

I'll never forget Hilary Clinton's answer to the question whether she thinks street drugs will be legalized: "No, there's too much money in it."

Don't get me wrong - I'd love to open an opium den over here. I just don't see it happening anytime soon due to this stupid, futile "war".

In America progress is always a slow process. But every state we get is a huge victory. Even a small state like Vermont is going to influence neighboring states when nearby states notice how much money VT. is going to save.

Some states in the northeast already have decriminalization and it isn't changing a whole lot for people in NYC, etc. - just saying.
