A new poll has apparently discovered that the average festival goer would rather spend time taking drugs, having sex and drinking than watching bands perform live.

The poll, run by MSN, quizzed 2,000 people about their festival habits and opinions and found that a quarter of them had slept with a stranger at a festival while 21% had taken drugs and 13% had been in a fight.

Non-musical merrymaking at festivals apparently spans the generations, with 9% of middle-aged (aged 45-54) people quizzed admitting to using drugs at a festival, a fifth confessing to drinking heavily and 10% saying they'd slept with someone they met on site. Only 45% of people polled said they went to festivals for the music.

Overall, 47% of the 2,000 people polled admitted to having done something they would "never consider doing outside of the music festival environment" while at a festival. Other reasons for attending festivals cited by those quizzed included the atmosphere, socialising with friends and the opportunity to escape from everyday life.

In response to the poll, George McKay, Professor of Cultural Studies at Salford University, said: "Festivals are deeply rooted in the carnival tradition, which is to invert everyday expectations of normal behaviour. Historically, carnivals would have a 'lord of misrule' who oversaw the revelries and subversion of the ordinary rules of life. Music festivals continue to be places where we can escape reality and subvert the rules - whatever age we happen to be."

Financially, the average spend at UK festivals among the 2,000 people polled was £423. However, 60% of young people (aged 18-24) quizzed said that festivals are too expensive for them.

This doesn't surprise me. Last year at Bonnaroo, it seemed like partying was the only reason why a great deal of those kids went to the festivals. I don't think I will be going back even though I shared a great time tripping with a new friend during the Foster the People Concert and then the Radiohead concert. That night was the highlight of my summer. The LSD was great, but I was there to see the music more than to take drugs.

If you ask guys if they'd rather have sex with a stranger or watch a band play, most will say sex. Take the sex out and the results may be a bit more balanced.

Better question is would you rather have sex with a stranger or take your favorite drug.

I hate Phish, but I would probably go to a Phish show for the drugs. I don't think I could take 3 days of jam bands though.

The thing is you still hear the music going on at these festivals no matter, am I right?

I have never been to one. Would like to but I'm just not great at leaving my security bubble. Health complicated.

The responses to this poll are so incredibly ugly to me. It's reasons like this that festivals, especially EDM ones are so completely saturated with a bunch of idiots who get into trouble...because they're only there to get fucked up.

The music and acts are what drew me into these things, and are still the reason that I go. I'm not the type to buy a ticket several months in advance because of atmosphere. I'll wait for a lineup and see if the crazy price I'm going to spend on a ticket is even worth it.

In 2009 I spent $90 on a 2-day pass to EDC. This year, $350 for 3 days on top of having to drive to shit-hole Vegas?! I passed!

Not surprising... just go to a "rave", festival, or any event and you will quickly realize that. From the ptots, to the bros, to the adults who come and have no idea what the scene is about (not all adults but almost every problem I had was from a drunk adult who couldn't even name one edm artist...now true older people who really are into the music/scene are some of the best people i met...shit my rave family is full of them...I'm like the youngest >.>), ect... however, its not everyone and it sure as hell isn't me. Sometimes I get fucked up, but I'll still be dancing my hardest. I even went to starscape sober one year and danced the whole 16 hour event with some breaks... everyone kept asking me for molly because they really thought I was high... nah high on the music man.

That's pretty much the only reason I'd go to one...

But the music would a nice in the background

Personally, I don't think the sex with random strangers is mutually exclusive either. But a condom is a must.
