Amsterdam - Coffeeshop Etiquette

Hi Peeps,

I'm going to Amsterdam for a long weekend tomorrow. I'm not a huge smoker myself due to my anxiety, which cannabis seems to either alleviate or agitate. However, we're going in a group of 7 so I'm sure we'll delve into a coffeeshop sooner or later.

I'd really hate to be seen as rude so apart from the obvious, is there specific any etiquette to follow? I've been to Holland a few times before and they're always lovely people. But yeah, I just don't want to do anything that would be really frowned upon that I might not think twice about?!

Also any other tips about coffeeshops in general would be good to know, general do's/don'ts and hints & tips!

Don't just buy weed buy some other stuff at the coffee shop otherwise it seems kinda rude

You see, I was told this advice before and last time I wanked in the corner under my coat I got taken out back (to which I thought I was being taken to the VIP room) but they then proceeded to kick me out the back door? No idea if he had just got out the wrong side of bed or anything but that was the first and last time I tried it.
 
The coffeeshop staff I've encountered in Amsterdam were in most cases the most rude people I've ever met, just there itching to get your money and free a few tables for more cattle to come in and get milked. Seriously it felt like bar staff in the most touristy areas of France and Italy. Rude beyond belief.

Why? It's not like your not buying anything is it? You've just spent 10 euro, whats wrong with not getting a drink if you dont fancy one? If you just walked in and sat there smoking weed you've bought elsewhere without buying a drink I could understand, but I'd be annoyed if a coffeeshop owner had a problem with that.

Like Kenny said though, in a lot of the shops I just found the staff generally rude, especially the ones in the RLD. Noticeable exceptions for de kroon and Popeyes.
 
are you surprised they are rude, when they have a constant flow of dickhead tourists from all over the globe going through their doors every day.

Amsterdam is the last place in the world I would go to in order to get stoned.

See this is what I find a bit grey. If we've gone in and chucked 10eu each at them for a gram, so 70eu, would you really be expecting to buy anything else for the sake of it? It's somewhat comparable getting a round in at the pub, you go there to drink, then feeling obliged to buy a packet of nuts?

I just hate to be seen as a typical rude/ignorant foreigner so I'd like to abide by the norm etiquettes. If it is what it is, then fair enough :)

Obviously I wouldn't take my own weed in, light up and walk out. Kinda like taking a 4pack of beer to your local pub and watching Sky Sports on a Sunday :P

I would say that as long as you're buying something, you should be welcome. I'll often take my own weed and only buy a hot chocolate or toastie, and the nice coffeeshops are fine with that. Don't think there's much else to think of in the way of etiquette.. oh, maybe photography (especially flash) would be frowned on, as would talking loudly on your mobile, I guess. I recommend Dampkring, if you can get a table. Their toasties are amazing.
 
I'm guessing most of the people with bad experiences here have not been to the best of coffeeshops while in Amsterdam (places like the Bulldog, Grasshopper, Dampkring, Rokerij). These shops are proper tourist traps and I avoid them at all costs. If you're willing to venture out of the city centre and try some of the smaller, less-known (and cheaper) coffeeshops you may find a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Quote you on that, unfortunately the people I was with never wanted to leave the RLD so we went to the worst coffeeshops, only decent one was full of Americans but at least the staff there was nice. I want to go there on my own once and enjoy it properly.
 
I can quite believe that. I only passed through Amsterdam when I spent a long weekend in the Netherlands and didn't go to any of the coffeeshops there. Went to a few in Haarlem where I was staying though and they were all pretty friendly and chilled. Few if any tourists. Never bought owt but weed. I did tend to smoke whilst out and about more than in coffeeshops which got me a few disapproving looks from locals. Particularly older folk. Younger folk seemed not to mind and I got chatting with a few randomers here and there over a shared spliff or two. Being bollocked in Dutch by two coppers for suspected vagrancy whilst puffing on a massive, stinking weed spliff was kinda fun for novelty value too :D

Would love to go visit again one day but would avoid the touristy coffeeshops like the plague.

Ya. Have read about that place, Brimz. Saw a documentary about it too. Looks right up my street %)

Sadly, I can barely afford to travel to the next town let alone Denmark. But is on my ToGo list for when I become fabulously wealthy. Or just less skint.

I'm still annoyed that I went to Copenhagen and didn't get around to going there.. blah. Has anyone visited Maastricht for weedy purposes? Am being tempted by cheapo flights to Brussels and they seem to still be serving tourists there.

And I don't think you can lump Dampkring in with Bulldog, Rockerij and Grasshopper. It's much less touristy than those 3, I guess partly because the location is a bit out of the way. But yes, visit the 'touristy' ones and expect grumpy service and crap weed.
