NEW: DMT Found in the Pineal Gland of Live Rats

Post on 05/23/2013 by CRF
We’re excited to announce the acceptance for publication of a paper documenting the presence of DMT in the pineal glands of live rodents. The paper will appear in the journal Biomedical Chromatography and describes experiments that took place in Dr. Jimo Borjigin’s laboratory at the University of Michigan, where samples were collected. These samples were analyzed in Dr. Steven Barker’s laboratory at Louisiana State University, using methods that funding from the Cottonwood Research Foundation helped develop.

The pineal gland has been an object of great interest regarding consciousness for thousands of years, and a pineal source of DMT would help support a role for this enigmatic gland in unusual states of consciousness. Research at the University of Wisconsin has recently demonstrated the presence of the DMT-synthesizing enzyme as well as activity of the gene responsible for the enzyme in pineal (and retina). Our new data now establish that the enzyme actively produces DMT in the pineal.

The next step is to determine the presence of DMT in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid that bathes the brain and pineal. CSF is a possible route for pineal-synthesized DMT to effect changes in brain function. Successfully establishing DMT’s presence in this gland adds another link in the chain between the pineal and consciousness and opens new avenues for research.

We thank those who have already donated to our advancement of the research in this field. We hope the recent developments will encourage you to donate to Cottonwood again, or for the first time, in order to continue this fascinating and intriguing line of research. When donating, please make sure you select “Pineal Project” as the specific project.

YES! Some science involved with DMT.
I strongly believe its in every living mammal...at least.

Great post its awesome to actually see some solid proof that it is found in the 3rd eye. After reading the spirit molecule I fully believe it is present in most if not all living organisms and its produced in said gland. I think ill go smoke some now:)

Given the simplicity of the molecule and the ubiquity of its precursor and synthesizing enzymes, it is plausible that dmt may exist in at least trace amounts in all living organisms. The concentration of dmt would be the important thing to look at.

The important thing was that it existed in the pineal gland in rats, not that it existed in rats. But, I agree, we should look at the relative concentrations of it in mammals.

I'm pretty sure that all cells have the mechanism for synthesis(l-tryptophan, aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, and amine N-methyltransferase), but it would likely only be in tiny trace amounts unless there was a specific pathway for it, which seems to be what they discovered in this study. It didn't say how much dmt they found, so I will await more info. This is a promising new finding for the hypothesis that dmt acts as a meaningful neurotransmitter.

I think it's been proven that DMT is present at very trace levels in whole brain; this does not suprise me but it also doesn't validate any of the "3rd eye" DMT-released-during-mystical-experiences mumbo-jumbo either, unless DMT is found at truly ridiculously high concentrations. Even then, it may be a totally different story in primate or human brains.

This. If I had a dollar for every time I read a Youtube comment like "dood, dmt is released when you are born and when you die and every night when you sleep and I know it's true cause I read it on the internet"...

Speculation is fine, but admit it when you do it or this kind of thing will happen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAdPZuZ5GXE This is a great lecture about dmt pharmacology showing that dmt meets all the requirements for being able to function as a neurotransmitter. This doesn't mean that it does, but that it is certainly possible.

Thanks for that necessary nuance. The amount of unfounded claims on the origin and function of DMT in human brains is baffling and frankly, quite annoying. This research - while interesting - doesn't seem to really add anything fundamental about why DMT is found in so many living creatures. Research like this might get us closer to an answer, of course, but until we've learned much more, it'd be helpful if we could hold off on speculation of the third kind...
