Hello im a everyday user of iv heroin and i ALWAYS use fresh needles and im very sanitary. I have an injection sight that is slightly more red then usual and had a small small pus bubble around it. I popped the pus bubble, cleaned it with an alcohol pad and then put an antibiotic cream on it and then a bandaid. It does not hurt, and is not swollen at all. I wanted to know is this the beggining of an abcess or could it just be a skin infection that got some dirt in it after an injection. I know 9/10 answers will be go to the hospital but id rather not have the junkie note on my record and i will if it gets worse but i want to note that this injection site is at least 3-5 days old and is not swollen and does not hurt at all. Any help would be appreciated. As i noted i always use clean and new equiptment and am very careful with my IVing. Thank you.

If it gets any worse or deeper...

Guess what? GO TO THE HOSPITAL...

Or... lose a chunk of your arm, sepsis, or amputation... You make the ultimate choice.

As i said, im obviously going to go to the hospital if it gets worse, but my main question is thre any way to identify an abcess.

A red pussing injection site is usually a pretty good indication...

It definitely sounds infected. If you don't get it treated, you could end up with serious issues.

Does an infection mean a definate abcess or, as i said could it just be some dirt that got into an open wound that can be treated with antibiotic cream?

No it doesn't mean a definite abscess, but it's usually a pretty good indicator. Either way, it's infected and the type of antibiotic and other specific treatment guidelines vary. That's the doctors job.

Self diagnosing and self medicating like that is not a good idea. It takes 2 seconds to see the doctor and it's all confidential. That's what there job is.

It wasnt pussing like a popped pimple, it was a tiny amount of pus under thin skin which. Basically wiped off with the alchohol pad. I feel like i am scaring myself, but id rather be safe then sorry. Te thing is i have a family doctor and cant have my mother visit him next month and theyll have an interesting convo.. It doesnt look serious but im going to get penicillin tommorow and am definately going to keep an eye on it.. If it gets worse within 3 days im going to the hospital. If anyone can reccomend good otc antibiotics id appreciate it.

the injection site was red, but wasnt hot at all barely had pus, was not swollen, does not hurt, and hasnt increased in size in the past few days

We're not doctors and like I said, taking random antibiotics is not a good idea.

Closing this as the only advice to give has been given. Seek medical attention.
