What a couple of cuties! I wish I could see them IRL--I bet they are both characters.
Yeah, they really are. I wish you could see them, I know you'd like them. The bird takes a long time to get to know, he usually doesn't warm up to people unless they really put in the time and effort. You also can't act scared of him - if you do, he will try to bite you or chase you every time you get close to him.
I acted scared the first time I tried to get him to come to me (as the people I got him from sold him to me), and he tried to bite. The big beak is intimidating. I tried again and acted really calm, moving slow and steady and he came to me with no trouble. Unfortunately, my mom is the only other person who can have anything to do with him. Everyone else is scared of him. He has only bit someone bad once - that was my dad. Baby wanted his cap and pulled it off, and my dad was trying to take it away from him. Both my mother and I told him to let the bird have it, but he did not listen and got a big hole bit in his hand. Now my dad is afraid of him.
For whatever reason, he went right up to my brother's ex-girlfriend and climbed on her shoulder. I did not want to let him because I thought he might bite her, but she insisted. He probably sensed that she was friendly and not afraid. He did start pulling her hairclip and hair, so I had to get him off.
He doesn't like my brother though. He knocked him off the top of the door with a broom twice the last time he was here and he gets angry and kicks things around in the floor if the bird is in his way - my brother is staying at my house again and he should try to tolerate the presence of my bird - he doesn't go after my brother unless he goes into the bird's territory. He climbed up the couch right beside my brother and did not bother him, but my brother got pissed off and gave me some mean looks and grumbling and then walked away after 15-20 seconds because I did not move the bird. I'm not going to do something for someone when they are being rude to me like that - he could have asked nicely and I would have done it.
My raccoon likes everyone and very quickly warms up to new people. He is a little wary at first but usually will cautiously approach a new person pretty fast - within 10 minutes or so. He is really playful. He does bite when he is playing, but not hard - usually nothing more than minor discomfort from it. He will bite harder if you take something from him and don't get your hand out of the way or if you try to take him to his room when he wants to stay out, but at worst it just barely punctures the skin and bleeds a few drops. He did bite really hard 3 times when he was 6-8 months old, leaving big bruised lumps and small holes on my arms. He hasn't bit anyone that hard since.
He will open anything that has a handle on it and opens latches. He can also open containers with lids. If the lid is screwed on, it has to be loose for him to unscrew it. He can turn lights on and off and turn the water on in the sinks. The most interesting thing I have seen him do is push a box or bucket against the wall to reach something. I did show him how a few times before he figured that out. He can walk on two legs, but not very far. He uses his hands in a similar way to humans, picking things up. The bird can also use his foot to pick things up. They like little kids toys that have buttons to push to make sound. Lucky (the coon) will try to open your mouth with his hands and will stick his mouth in yours if he gets the chance. He also will gently rub his paws against your face. This can hurt though, because the claws are usually sharp.
Only family members and one friend (actually, my only human friend) know about Lucky. A stupid law was passed - it is okay for fur farms to keep them in horrible conditions and murder them for their skin and for hunters to kill and trappers to trap them in their torture devices, but it is no longer legal to keep them as pets. I think that is really fucked up. I'll have to get a hunting or trapping license so I can legally have a live raccoon. I won't actually hunt or trap anything though.
I'll write a blog post some time about my pets to give more info. I'll try to get some video and put that online so you can see them in action. It may be a while, but I'll do it when I am up to it and I'll post links here.
