I was just reading in the Media section at BL & I came across these reports about the new ACMD head talking about the Legal Highs market in the UK, & referring to both the Benzo Furans & to some powerful new Psychedelic compounds which I presume are the NBOMe's. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another one of those new, temporary banning orders in the near future...

This I would not mind... Not that like prohibition. I doubt they will be as sought after, though. Which in the case of these drugs I would celebrate.

even dodgier drugs.

Dunno, might spark up new compounds that are closer to LSD or Mescaline analogues (apart from the 3 that are available now) or something? That's with a whole bunch of optimism though

I suppose making nbomes illegal is going to leave us with crap being sold as lsd but they're still far easier to synth and going to be stashed for years.

I've popped this over to EADD where it fits better. I'm not surprised to see him conceal the name of the NBOMes, media exposure has done bad things in the past.

As I said in the DiTM thread, it's odd that he flat-out rejects the NZ model, as I feel like I've seen him praise it before, but he's not all bad. The NBOMes are an absolute blight because of our drug culture and the way that people can obtain them so easily.

So NBOMes will be illegal in the UK. And... How will that change anything? If I wanted to buy NBOMes I'd be buying 'em from overseas vendors anyway. If I were so minded I could easily buy a few grammes from the Continent (or plenty other places), lay some blotter and make an absolute fortune selling "acid". Obviously I would never do that but the kinda scumbags who do are hardly gonna give a toss about legality are they? Not when most supply (specifically powder) comes from overseas anyway. Might help curb the chancers buying NBOMe blotter from UK vendors and selling it on as "acid" but will make no difference to anybody who has the wherewithal to wait an extra day or two for delivery and lay their own blotter. Which I'm assuming most scammers will be doing anyway really.

Stooopid. As ever. Stooooopid and utterly pointless.

'imitate the effects of 1960s-style LSD psychedelics'...

Because LSD was a different substance in other decades yeah? 8)

'LSD, which once fuelled the 1960s psychedelic era but has been out of popularity for more than 30 years.'

So LSD hasn't been popular since the '60s? Hmmm...

Actually, I hadn't really thought of that. Most people won't touch the NBOMes because of the 2C-X contamination, and they will still be very available, so the unscrupulous folks selling them as LSD are unlikely to be stopped by this.

I only hope that they don't take off like they have in the US. Normally I like being in the "secret club" of drug users, where most can handle their shit like the general population probably couldn't, but it seems like the NBOMes are catching even the initiated off their guard.

A friend of mine had a very serious (fortunately non-fatal due to medical intervention) seizure after unknowingly combining an NMOMe that he presumed was acid, with MDMA. At the hospital they said 7 people have died recently doing something similar. Prohibition seems unlikely to solve this, but it certainly seems true that these are not substances to be taken lightly. Not that any drug is to be 'taken lightly.' But you know what I mean.

I scoffed at someone in the Media forum who reckoned acids popularity waned in the 80's, a time-line which I pointed out coincided surprisingly with the advent of acid house & raving.

It's popularity may well have been waning everywhere else in the developed world but there can be little doubt that LSD (as well as Ecstacy of course!) played a huge part in the late 80's rise of UK rave.

Aye ismene you're probably right according to this graph:

707px-LSD_annual_new_use_USA_1967-2008.png

Although it did seem to drop quite harshly during the 80's.. it seems to massively spike for 2000 but then quickly massively drop again (but still only to about the same level as 1967)..

Although keeping in mind this is estimated first time use

^Hmmm... that's US data, I'm not sure how applicable it is over here. Their drug culture is a bit different from ours, isn't it? According to that MixMag survey LSD and psychs generally are far more popular over there :\

Presuming those data are precise, that huge trough between 2001-2003 is very interesting! I wonder what happened in 2000/2001 (if anything) to cause it.

Do you think it was the NBOME? Reason being the snuff caps are quite popular around here and I know people who often take a fair amount of them and mix with other drugs mainly coke/mdma.

I always felt the US had NBOMEs about more. It's only recently I've found NBOME blotter sold on the street whereas before it was only the US side of BL I was seeing missold blotter.
