Opioids Nothing but negative effects from hydrocodone after 3 year absence. Why?

I did a 5-6 year tour with hydrocodone from 2004-2010. I was doing 30-40 mgs. a day and never once missed a day. For the first 4 years, it was nothing short of spectacular. But the last year and a half I took it it was not good at all. The great effects turned into a more depressing, non-talkative, irritable, jaw clenching, headachy buzz with absolutely no euphoria.

And that brings me to today. It's been nearly 3 years since I've taken any painkillers. Never once over that 3 years have I taken even one pill. So just yesterday I just took one 10 mg. hydrocodone and was thinking I would be in for one hell of an old school ride again. I figured it would be like my very first time again. I was very wrong. In fact, it was awful. Just like the end of my 6 year run..it was depressing, irritable, non-talkative, headachy and so on with absolutely no euphoria.

Can anyone explain this to me? Don't get me wrong, I'm never wanting to get back on painkillers again. I'm just surprised that after such a long break that I was unable to experience any positive effects.

consider yourself lucky you could keep that going for 4 years, especially at such a low dose. Opiates make me pretty irritable too, i still get euphoria and pleasant effects but the side effects certainly ruin it. Once you've passed that honey moon stage with opiates, i don't really think there's any way of going back.

After 2-3 years, i've had enough and after getting myself through PAWS i'm just not going back, unless someone hands me an infinite supply of opiates or something or if heroin is legalized...still the side effects, especially opiate irritability often ruin the experience unless i plan on nodding out all day myself.
 
You did not take enough...

You can take enough to irritate you but not get high...

You can’t stay on a stable high dose forever.

That’s what happened during your glory days.

I will consider myself lucky. That bad experience put to sleep any notions I had of ever going back again. And just like you, the PAWS that I experienced for 2 + years was absolute hell. The restless leg syndrome was exhausting. I don't think I had one full nights sleep the entire 2 years.

After a three year break you still don't think I took enough with the 10 mgs? I would have thought 5 mgs. would have done the trick.

Using opiate for an extended time leads to a permanent change in lower level tolerance...

So You would have at least needed up to 20 to 25 mgs...

You essentially prolonged withdrawal for all that time you were using.

I'm sure cutting it back in the last year of my run to 20 mgs. per day didn't help either? Talking about prolonging the withdrawal...
