Even though it's very unlikely that Voyager 1 will ever be discovered in quite a few lifetimes, and that Stephen Hawking said something along the lines that we should stay quiet as the likelihood of a civilisation being one of peace was naive, what are your favourite pieces of music from...
Voyager's Golden Record?

I'd have to go with:

Jaat Kahan Ho by Surshri Kesar Bai Kerkar

Flowing Streams

Tchenhoukoumen, percussion Senegal (This is fucking brilliant)

And last, but by no means least...

Cranes in their nest by Goro Yamaguchi

It's quite a collection of music, and I very much doubt that - if today - we were to send a tin can past our solar system, hoping that it would reach an intelligent new race, very little would have changed from the lineup .... But I fucking bet justin beebwarr would be on there :A

I've never listened to it but will. I do like the alleged reason for not including any Bach though...

Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - a composer so great that when it was suggested that his music be included on the Voyager 1 space probe as evidence to alien life-forms of human intelligence, a colleague of Carl Sagan allegedly objected - “that would just be showing off”.

Good thread... music and space flight in the same place!

Probably the Chinese piano music - flowing streams.

Or maybe johnny b Goode... But probably because it reminds me of back to the future!

"Flowing Streams" is beautiful and so simplistic in it's nature - I love music like that :)

Hahaha! I thought to myself when listening to it: "Oh jeebus what have we done!"
But then I thought of the recent music sent into the vastness of space-time and though that it would never be listened to or would be distorted by space-time so that it may actually be interesting!
As this version of justin bieber's "U Smile" slowed down 800% has such beauty!
Never thought I'd say that, but trust me - It's a beautiful ~36mins piece and, for something beautiful to come out of his arsehole for a mouth, I'm well impressed =D

monstanoodle - i vaguely recall reading of hawking saying that - and it suprised me at the time. i presume he's alluding to the fact they may be warlike? this is highly unlikely. any advanced civilisation would be based around science and more than likely abide by a similarly advanced code of ethics.. similar to how scientists in our society would hold to a strict non-interference policy on the subjects of their studies. of course, having a predisposition of indifference is no guarentee of our safety - they may be sufficiently advanced to pay no more mind to wiping us out as we would to throwing out mouldy bread, but this is the less likely possibility

sure makes you think though 8o

hopefully theyll be suitably dalek-like to be defeated by use of the household staircase alone :D

Wow. That really is very nice indeed, Monsta 8(

Have never actually heard anything by Bieber. Gotta say I don't get what all the hate is for if it's all as good as that =D
I know!
It was a piss-take on DSF years back, but I've found it beautiful and almost like a meditation aid of sorts :)
I've never listened to the "original" myself as it would likely just spoil it all for me :(

Aye I get what yer saying BHM, but there are so many variables to consider:
Do they need resources and - if so - would they wish to trade or just take?
Our Sciences have created the most destructive force that we know of.
Their planet(s), akin to ours, may be "dying" and a new settlement is needed.

But yes, they may be very peaceful and just like us, wishing to contact another intelligently occupied planet :) One can hope!

And you forget - Daleks can fly now ;) Hehe

hm.. i guess youre right in that the variables are legion. but the examples you offered (i accept, just off the top of your head) are unlikely

the reasons? well, a sufficiently advanced civilisation would be adept at extracting resources (or rather components thereof) from uninhabited planets/moons/etc. aside from being less hassle generally, theyre also (as far as we know) far more numerous than worlds suitable for at least carbon-based life. even a stage II civilisation (one whom extracts resource from its entire solar system) would be unlikely to have need to attack a populated world, stage III's (those who extract resource from their entire galaxy & presumably the most likely to visit) thus, would be even less likely to anti-matter-bomb our asses.. infact, we would likely hold little interest for such beings whatsoever

i agree tho, contrary to film lore.. if aliens advanced enough to traverse space did wish us harm - we, will smith and all - wouldnt stand a fuckin chance

flying daleks? boo!

What BHM said. Why take resources from a populated planet when there are so many other options? If nothing else we make for an interesting zoo.

Also, The Kardashev Scale

NSFW:
Every 311 trillion 40 billion years
I manifest, un-manifest, then reappear
This time around I'm 15 billion years old
From a place in the multiverse where reference points are zero
The only gods in this bitch are us
We are the species in the labs creating shit from dust
I can build a whole universe in C++
Delete the source code, in a repetitive series of cycles
You believe in virgin birth
Why can't you believe that I hack into the internet of a another universe's Earth?
Spit with reckless abandon
Describe my span the distance sandwiched between stars and exo-planets
Be prepared when you step into duel
Is life the rule of thumb or the exception to the rule?
Seems like an awful waste of space if it just is
We still believe pages from when they wre just making this shit up
And so we're clear that your thoughts are private class functions
In case the programming analogies haven't sunk in
I'll take you as far back as you can take it
Back when the space we currently occupy was ancient
Everything you ever knew of only happened on this one planet
Found out you evolved and jumped into a panic
For real witness the birth of homo sapiens offspring
Cyborgs destined to roam the stars like star scream
If God can be self-caused, so can the universe
Ya'll can't think anything yourself, you need a ruler first
My lyrics behave like particles and waves
Every field theory untitled on one page
Dogmatic faith is dying or dead already
The last remaining are telling us to get our weapons ready
Because I doubt they are going down without a fight
Them in the future is us in the dark without a light
You don't want me to tell you what battle's like
Life and death data relayed over globally positioned satellites
You don't know when it's going down so you travel light
It's easy to send troops if you believe in afterlife
If I have to erupt, you'll see the flash at night
Half the time I have half the mind to try to stab the mic
Human beings open sourced running updates
You might be living a simulation, define the substrate
You might as well adopt extropian principles
I always asked why until I was sent to the principal's
The likelihood of what they're trying to sell is miniscule
It's minimal, I just try to inform you in general
The counter arguments I hear are just pitiful
They just give us something else to reticule
Lyrically I'm sinning too
Yeah that's what they say
Name any other emcees whose lyrics they debate
Turn it up, what the neighbors gonna say?
Before you listen to Grey, tuck your faith safe away in a safe
Because I'm coming for it
You gave your allegiance in exchange and got nothing for it
That's why it's so abhorrent
At first they knew they had to break the African women
She in-turn would break the African younglings
The result, we had to latch on to something
Keep the body, take the mind
Like soldiers training breaking slaves in ancient times
Let's take a journey up the Kardashev scale
United type 2 resources building Dyson spheres
And I won't live to see it but it's nice to hear
Everybody who would have had the right to be there
That's why you frightened and scared
Your obsolete beliefs will die with you
And your grandchildren will simply outgrow the God issue
No longer taboo to touch religion
The only thing we need left is an uprising in Muslim women

Now those are lyrics %)

a zoo yes, advanced monkeys. including one super-advanced, helpful, visually impaired one

id totally sell your arses down the river for a cute three titted-zero mouth'd alien chick and a matter replicator or two... with the anti-drug controls turned off, naturally

whoa there marms.. deep breaths, put down the lipstick. unfortunately my vision is 20/20, thus my ruggedly handsome, chiseled, almost adonis-like features ..are devoid of the occular addendum that makes you go all gooey

though i could feasibly borrow & thus, initially see more clearly your particular extremely sexy-secretary-esque, veritably voluptuous visage of womanliness (yes im serious) ..i fear it would result in diminishing returns for my unprescribed-ability to glimpse such daily, dazzling-beauty as yours

im also concerned that, having experienced the full, raw, through-the-night, primal, heights-you-never-thought-possible, passion-laden, sweat-soaked, animalistic act of physical bhm love.. youll never be quite fully satisfied with mere mortal men again

alas, seems i must remain as now, only a twice-weekly object of your hushed, most private fantasies. but hey.. in time, my vision may naturally decline - in which case, i'll come rock your fucking world <3

However did I ever miss this post?

What happened to BHM? does he even post anymore?
