EADD Fishing thread

I don't see how it's possible to know one way or the other whether or not a creature without language (as we know it) feels pain. The only reason I have to think that other humans feel pain is the fact that I feel pain and they tell me they feel pain, and as they're similar to me, I believe them. Maybe just the similarity is enough without them screaming in agony.

Observing neurons responding to stimuli says nothing about the animal's subjective experience.

I have no idea if fish feel pain or not.

They are food.

If they are going to be eaten I'll kill them as quickly as possible. If they are not, I'll do what I can to return them unharmed, even if they're still upset.

I think that's a fair and pragmatic approach, you murdering bastard.

Yeah, I mean, my aim is to kill as many as possible.

But I assume they suffer some level of discomfort, and I try to minimise it.

But it doesn't bother me, causing discomfort to fish. They're just fish. Ten a penny. Like miners.

You should dam off the river section you're fishing and spike it with a knock-out dose of benzos. Then just wade through, picking them up and bagging them. They'll suffocate, but painlessly. And dinner will bemroe fnu.

Oh wait you're a Sea Angler.

I don't really fish rivers.

Spent an afternoon in eastern Turkey once "fishing" with some Kurds using some sort of massive car battery and wire loop set up.

Just stunned the fish long enough for you to grab them, if you were quick, so giving you the opportunity to select the larger specimens. (they took everything, big and small :( )

lol mephedrone fishfood baits.

true story - wd40 is a useful bait enhancer.

I lubricate my shaver with WD40 so I often smell of it. Beats Lynx Africa. Actually I wash after so that's a lie. Interesting story there, BHM, never knew that.

It's probably not very healthy, I know...

Dogs yelping and howling in pain are pretty easy to understand ?

Of course a fish feels pain or they would regularly kill/maim themselves on sharp rocks or thorns, etc.

True, I would call that a kind of language and I'm pretty confident dogs feel pain! Even without the yelping, they are fairly complex beings which have striking similarities to humans. I'm as sure they feel pain as I'm sure humans do.

Of course a fish feels pain or they would regularly kill/maim themselves on sharp rocks or thorns, etc.

That goes for any moving creature. Do worms feel pain? Amoebae? They all avoid dangerous elements in their environment. Probably. And they might feel pain, I freely admit.

I'm not saying fish don't feel pain, I'm just saying it's not obvious one way or the other. No I'm not, I'm saying it's impossible to tell.

I try to only eat fish that I catch myself. Even this is not perfect, and we can catch undersized fish whose swim bladders blow as they surface so they can't be returned alive. I take these fish to a local otter sanctuary.

We also try to return any fish alive who are obviously full of roe. Same goes for crabs

Certainly seems a more respectable, humane approach to fishing.

That's pretty messed up logic. You're saying, because they're not as complex as a human it's ok to cause them discomfort?

I'm saying I see fish as food. I kill what I want to eat. As quickly as possible.

I try not to catch species i don't like, or fish that are undersized (there's no way to actively avoid catching roe-bearing fish).

If I see a fish has been badly damaged and is unlikely to survive (foul-hooked, or blown swim bladder), and is not something I want to eat,I'll kill it for the otters.

Other fish I don't want to eat go back alive.

I don't consider catching a fish the same as catching a human to eat. That would be messed up logic.

I don't feel any guilt about fishing. None at all. My fishing causes no damage to fish stocks :( , and almost no damage to the marine environment.
