Getting Tramadol for chronic pain today, what should I expect?

Hiya guys, as above, have suffered chronic pain for years due to building laptops and repairing in a factory. I was prescribes Aulin years ago but they took it off the market here, I'm getting Tramadol later and am nervous about it, I have never had painkillers like this before just want to know if they make you drowsy (which I don't want) or give you an added bonus of a mood left. I'm a devil for benzos, not too bad but can neck up to 5-6 a day mix and match. Along with the pain relief which I so badly need, would they do anything to help me cut down on the benzos? All help/info appreciated! Btw, I'm very slim at 8 and a half stone if any of that matters. Thank you so much in advance xxx

Tramadol is not extremely strong in opiate effects, so though you may feel some sedation, it probably won't make you drowsy. You might feel a bit off at first, so make sure you find out how the medication will affect your reaction time and such before operating a vehicle or any other machinery.

You will probably experience a mood lift from the tramadol alone even if you weren't in chronic pain, as it also has SNRI properties and acts as an anti-depressant.It will also more than likely allow you to reduce your consumption of benzodiazepines as they are both depressants, synergize well together, and some of your anxiety was likely exacerbated by your pain. If you do not have physical dependence to the benzodiazepines, I will suggest that you skip them the day you plan on taking your tramadol for the first time.

Good post venrak, but tramadol is not an SNRI, it is a SRA (sert releasing agent)

Tramadol competitively inhibits norepinephrine transporter function at desipramine-binding sites in the adrenal medullary cells and probably the noradrenergic neurons of the descending inhibitory system.

To the OP. It really depends on how you take the tramadol. If you take it with the benzodiazepines, they will dock the tramadols stimulating properties, therefore causing it to be much less sedating than it usually is. If you take it without the benzodiazepines, you'll probably notice that it's more stimulating than it is sedating. A mood lift from tramadol is definitely an added bonus, and something I find more useful from tramadol than its pain killing properties.

The intention isn't to correct you laCster. No one has a complete library when it comes to drug pharmacology.

I've always known though, and I've always read that tramadol, specifically o-desmethyltramadol (m1) is a potent NRI.

(+)-Tramadol inhibits serotonin reuptake and (-)-tramadol inhibits norepinephrine reuptake, enhancing inhibitory effects on pain transmission in the spinal cord.

i wouldnt take over 200-250mgs in a day, even if you a scripted more than that. i had a grandmal seizure on 250mg tramadol

Well, what you can expect is that it may work as a decent painkiller, if your liver produces the correct enzymes to convert tramadol to o-desmethyltramadol. If your body is lackluster in this respect, expect it to have little beneficial effect in treating your pain. I can't remember the exact statistic, but it doesn't work for some 30% of people, but I could be wrong. Doesn't work for me, worthless stuff to some of us. Hope it works for you!
