Opioids Codeine addict about to undergo dental work

I abuse codeine phosphate and nurofen+, not a whole lot as I'm a small, codeine sensitive girl. I take about 8 n+ at one time twice a day when I don't have codeine phosphate pills. I use everyday, sometimes 8 n+ sometimes 16 and sometimes more but I use at least 8 a day and have been doing so for the last 4 months with a few days off. Before the 4 months of daily use I still abused off and on for month long periods over the last 3 or 4 years.

I'm about to have 3 wisdom teeth pulled and I'm just wondering if it's safe to be sedated or if I should opt for just local and be awake the entire time. I haven't had codeine in the last 24 hours so if I am given IV sedation, most likely midazolam/hypnovel, will this hit me harder as there may still be a bit of codeine floating around in my system? I plan to tell my dentist I use codeine as I am prescribed it. I am just apprehensive about going the local only route as I have anxiety about the procedure. I even had a nightmare last night about being sedated in the dental office and waking up in the hospital... Also I know that my kidney function is mildly impaired because of my codeine use, doctors have looked at me puzzled by the slightly off creatinine levels but I guess my kidney function isn't bad enough yet that they think it's a problem.

Can anyone advise? Any codeine users had their wisdom teeth pulled recently and what were your experiences?

P.S. If I have posted this thread in the wrong place I apologise, if there is a similar thread with advice I'd greatly appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I would tell the Dental Surgeon what you have taken in the last 24 hours and go the general anesthetic route for wisdom teeth.
Be truthful, it will make the procedure a lot more comfortable mentally and physically.
I had my wisdom teeth removed under General Anesthetic, I was using codeine at the time but much lower doses than what you wrote about above.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Again, just tell them what is in your system and go for the GA.

Edit: This wasn't recently, but I don't think that makes any difference.

I had my wisdom teeth removed while on Nitrous Oxide. You should get it done that way! It costed me about $80 and unfortunately wasn't covered in my insurance (usually extra stuff isn't). My doctor only asked me if I smoked any marijuana because stoners have a higher tolerance to Nitrous. But if you're worried about getting knocked out and your liver--nitrous is the way to go! You'll be awake during the whole procedure and seriously won't feel a thing (and I'm a baby when it comes to pain). All I was thinking was --I'M SO FUCKEN HIGH! Haha. It was awesome. Bring good music to listen to as well. :) Also--no recovery time! You're completely sober a minute after the whole operation.

Ive nothing to add to the above posters regarding your wisdom teeth removal. Ive had three removed with just lidocaine shots for pain and its honestly not as bad as you imagine it to be. I just wanted to address the large amount of ibruprofen your ingesting daily with your codeine. high doses of NASAIDs taken regularly can cause ulceration of the digestive tract and perforation of the small bowel, both potentially life threating. Also ibuprofen can cause high blood pressure leading to stroke and heart attack. I would say the ibuprofen could be the culprit of your 'off' creatinine levels, not the codeine. Im not 100% on the kidney one but regardless of that, your intake of ibuprofen is risky and you might well regret it futher down the road. I dont want you to feel like im having a go at you, i have geniune concern for your health with these kind of doses. Btw good luck at dentist. :-D

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you make the dentist understand that you are not immune to pain. When I told my dentist I was on Methadone he took that to mean I was not going to need any anesthesia since I was on such a high dose of Opioids already. According to my methadone clinic this is relatively common with dentists

^^This.

Once you've sorted your wisdom teeth story out, you Must tackle this issue.

(and this is assuming the wisdom teeth issue is going to happen in the next few days,
if not then you need to cut down radically on your ibuprofen intake as bunge has mentioned, starting now) .

I had 2 pulled and 2 impacted cut out I didn't get offered to be knocked out. I got nitrous it was fine and not painful. I don't understand why they offer being put in a coma for such an easy and relitivy painless thing.

I would go with nitrous if possible. Removes the anxiety and pain with out the side effects.

I had all 4 of mine yanked at once, they were supposed to put me under but refused to once they learned i was addicted to opiates (understandably, they dont want to be held liable for anything going wrong and it can be tricky to dose right when you have a tolerance). Instead they decided on giving me a crap-ton of novacaine. Unfortunately i have a rather large tolerance to novacaine as well (idk why, ive done coke and other stims but only recreationally, some have suggested cross-tolerance but again idk), so they ended up hitting the limit of allowed novacaine injections and they were only on the first injection on the last tooth (the others got 4 shots minimum and some a few more). This part was rather unpleasant to say the least, i could feel them pulling it out very distinctly but it wasnt really horrible pain, i survived it and they got all 4 out that day. The healing sucked and hurt like hell but id still say go for it even if they wont put you to sleep, i was just so glad to get it over with and really might have pussed out if i had to go in again. Also you may not have any problems with a novacaine tolerance, in which case it really wasnt bad at all, more mental than anything else. In short, just be totally forthcoming with them and they will make sure that even if they cant put you out, that you are totally comfortable (they made 100% sure i wanted them to finish my last one, they didnt just yank and then apologize later, and they told me what the deal was and everything beforehand). You should be just fine however they end up doing it. Good luck! :) <3

Oh, also i agree with the others: the ibuprofen is MUCH worse for you than the codeine and is the most likely culprit for your kidney problems. It can cause all sorts of health problems. Not to preach of course, just puttin it out there <3

I attempted to have mine extracted with just N2O (and I had taken 8mg of klonopin and 2mg of xanax) and was shaking before they even got into my mouth, so they realized I was going to have to go elsewhere for sedation (my mom works at a dental office that doesn't even use oral sedation). I went to an oral surgeon and the day before my surgery, I let him know about my high opioid tolerance as I'm a CPP, so he asked if I thought vicodin would still work. I gave him a very apprehensive "maybe," so he said, "well, we'll try them, and if they don't work just call me," and wrote me a script for 6 norco 10s a day. Well the day of the surgery, they give me an IV port, and start dosing demerol. I remembered wondering why I wasn't feeling anything and why it took them over a minute to get me put under. I get up from the surgery, and go home and am eating these norco like candy and they weren't doing it. I called him that night, and told him, and received the reply, "well, I'm not surprised they're not working; I had to give you 3 times the demerol I normally give patients your weight to put you under. I don't write morphine or OxyContin, so you can choose between demerol and percocet." Needless to say I took the percocet (6 percocet 10/650s per day) and was killing my liver as I was having to take about 100mg or so a day for real pain relief. Thank god I had an understanding surgeon; he wrote me 2 scripts of 30 perc 10/650s and 2 scripts of norco 10/325s, so while I was still in a decent amount of pain, I had pretty much all he could give me without attracting attention.

Be up front with your dentist and always stay on good terms with them once you find a good one.

Mine has done wonders....wisdom teeth and root canals all done with novicane shots only. Hell, on of the follow ups for the root canal was done with no shot. I was given the option to take one and never felt enough pain to need it. The nerves were gone in that tooth by that point anyway.

My point: its probably not going to be as bad as you think. Just suck it up and get through it.

One of my wisdom teeth was so deep in the jaw bone that he basically took a long bar with a claw on the end and used all his might to pry it out of there. I swear he almost broke my jaw a few times, said it was one of the worse he'd ever extracted (the guy is in his late 80s).

Three days later and some hydrocodone and I was just fine. Honestly the pain before the OP is far worse than the pain after IME. But I am an idiot that let mine get impacted and still have 2 to deal with in the future :). My dentist has made over $5,000 off me in a decade...all cash because I have no insurance. Had to do a lot of hustling, borrowing, and begging plus begin on a payment plan for awhile but I always make sure to pay that debt off ASAP. When the dude retires I have no idea what I am going to do....:(

lol...I had an impacted one as well...completely turned 90 degrees so that the top of the tooth was actually hitting the side of my other teeth - food was constantly getting stuck in there. My guy (an older gentleman as well, I'd estimate about 60) had to break mine up into 4 pieces...I actually still have them in a baggie lol...

Also I know that my kidney function is mildly impaired because of my codeine use, doctors have looked at me puzzled by the slightly off creatinine levels but I guess my kidney function isn't bad enough yet that they think it's a problem.

God damned assumptions, it'll kill you one day. How the fuck do you know it's the codeine that causes the problem? I can assure you one thing, codeine DOESN'T cause that problem and that you might be neglecting some more important health issue based on your blind belief that you did something wrong and that codeine is killing you.

That's the problem with you people...you think you've done something wrong...like the thief picking the pockets of someone and waiting for police to kick your door down any minute. You took codeine...so what? I take codeine, everyone here takes codeine. Big fucking deal.

I'm raged right now cause she put that nuropenis+ brand without saying the dose so I'm clueless how much she took...

afk slitting

I did research and cant find the dose in that shitty brand. How many fucking milligrams of codeine are in each neuropenis+ pill???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I think they come with 8...Pretty sure they're an OTC preparation.

edit: 12.8mg codeine phosphate...it's actually Nurofen...but here's the wiki, which for things like this I find reliable enough.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurofen

I had 8 in my mind, with 12.8mg might raise the creatinine with 16... thank you for reference.

tell your dentist everything.

CWE everything in future!

About her codeine prescription yes, about everything...that's debatable.

^+1

i was not put to sleep for the extraction of my wisdom teeth, rather they gave me a shot of a local anesthetic and asked the dental assistants to put the Nitrous on high..lol...i also gulped down 160mgs of DXM 45mins prior to the surgery, and i literally was soo faking high and euphoric. i love going to the dentist, even for a routine teeth cleaning, my dentist always lets me inhale some NO2. i always come prepped with DXM too, so i literally go into a hole every time..

however, one time i tried doing dxm + mxe before the nitrous....and that was definitely a moment to remember, but NOT in a good way... i was wayy wayy wayy to fucked up and too zonked out, i couldnt even speak or walk. it was quite awkward bcause my mother knew that i was totally stoned out of my mind... i thought i was the chosen one, and that aliens were coming to extract me from earth so i could fulfill my destiny. i remember i was transported to an egyptian pyramid shit and i felt like i was going through a tunnel...turns out MXE is an SSRI and not a DRI, so mixing MXE with DXM was incredibly stupid and dangerous...i was out of my body and mind for 18+ hours, even after getting home and stopping the nitrous, i was too fucked up to even walked. and when i did walk, i would walk and when i got to my bed, i would be shown a replay of me walking to my bed or my comp?? so weird!

moral of the story, dont overdo the DXM or nmda-antagonist before the procedure. the DXM +nitrous definitely helped tremendously to effectively stop any pain, and also gave me a nice anxiolytic effect. or maybe that was because i added in some xanax too? cant remember lol

ohh boy! this has me excited to go to the dentist again hahaha

I just had 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled out. My dentist didn't give me anything but lidocaine and it wasn't too bad. I want to say he gave me like 5 shots of lidocaine though because I was numb as fuck. I didn't feel any pain until it wore off... just a weird pulling/pressure sensation. He got them out pretty fast too and then gave me a hydrocodone perscription :) My teeth were already fully through the gum though. If yours have to be cut out instead of just pulled, your dentist may want to give you the general anesthesia. That's what my sister got because hers weren't through the gum and needed to be cut out. If they give you anything besides lidocaine (which I'm almost positive shouldn't interact badly with codeine) then yea tell your Dentist everything you're taking. General anesthesia is risky enough as is, don't make it worse by not telling your dentist what you're taking.
