The EADD Windows Technical Gibberings Thread

Yeah ffs you lot, even I knew that moving all the progs to the D: drive would fuck everything up

knock has it, i need to know what this 42gigs of shit is.

I back stuff up onto an external Tb HD, but only documents, photos, and shitloads of music.

i wouldn't know how to begin to do a proper backup.

I'm not posting you my laptop, there's 6 years worth of truly heinous stuff been on and off it, and I don't doubt for a second you'd trawl through every grotty bit (geddit??) of it.

Just trying to fucking avoid getting a new laptop, my fucking tiny sansa clip has more memory than my C: drive.

search for files bigger than 1gb, or bigger than 500mb etc until you've found and deleted/moved any big forgotten about files.

I think I've done that, I think theres millions of tiny files there, the names of which are completely meaningless strings of letters and dots and numbers.

Mailmonkey, this usually helps to find out where all your space is being taken up:
WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics <--- download link

if you dl and install this and let it scan your drive, then screenshot and post the pic which shows the map of where everything is.

windirstat.jpg

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for various versions of Microsoft Windows.
Note: if you are looking for an alternative for Linux, you are looking for KDirStat (apt-get install kdirstat on Debian-derivatives) and for MacOS X it would be Disk Inventory X or GrandPerspective.

Please visit the WinDirStat blog for more up-to-date information about the program.

On start up, it reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views:

The directory list, which resembles the tree view of the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
The treemap, which shows the whole contents of the directory tree straight away,
The extension list, which serves as a legend and shows statistics about the file types.

The treemap represents each file as a colored rectangle, the area of which is proportional to the file's size. The rectangles are arranged in such a way, that directories again make up rectangles, which contain all their files and subdirectories. So their area is proportional to the size of the subtrees. The color of a rectangle indicates the type of the file, as shown in the extension list. The cushion shading additionally brings out the directory structure.

Anyway, back up your important stuff.

Then click http://sourceforge.net/projects/gpa...table/0.14.1-6/gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486.iso

then click the green download button

then quickly RIGHT-click on the "direct link" link, and choose "save link as..." or "save as..."

Then locate a space for the file your downloading on your D drive, as you probably don't have space on the C drive.

Hit OK and wait for it to download.

Then you need CD burining software. Nero is the common one. It might already be on your computer. Nero Burning ROM or something.

If you don't have it, you could download this: http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

Install that. It should associate ISO files with that program. You might want to install it on your D drive, you'll get the choice. As you go through the installation panel, choose "Associate ISO files with CDBurner/XP". Then Install, Accept, Next.

It installs RealPlayer for some reason. Oh well, let it do it.

When it's installed, it should start. Click "Burn ISO image" from the menu. and choose OK.

Put a blank CD-R in the drive.

Click Browse and locate the ISO file you downloaded for GParted. (My Computer / D: / gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486.iso) and "open".

Then click Burn Disc. It will put the GParted software on the disk.
Reboot the computer with the disk in the drive. You need to make it boot off the CD, this is specific to your model of laptop. It might just do it automatically.

Press ENTER to choose GParted LIVE from the menu.

Wait a bit.

Press ENTER when it says "Don't touch keymap"

Enter 02 when prompted for your language

Enter 0 to "continue to start X to use GParted automatically"

Wait

You'll see something like this:

2nT77xu.png

Right click the box to the right which is your D drive and choose resize/move.

Drag the start of the box a bit to the right, say half way to let you have of the space allocated to drive D: available for drive C:

Then right click the box to the left, which is your C drive and choose resize/move.
Drag the right side of the box to the right, this is you expanding your C drive into the available space.

You should end up with something like this:

orDnRPK.png

Once it's ready, click the Apply (tick) button and it will do it's work

Click the EXIT button and choose Reboot from the menu, then OK.

Remove the CD when prompted.
Press ENTER

You should now reboot into a machine with a bigger C: drive.

I've just tested this and it worked. There were a few error messages but I just ignored them and it made fuck all difference. I was using an older version of GParted though, the newer one should not have those errors. If you get errors, don't panic, it's only when you hit Apply that it actually does anything to the disk. If you shit yourself, just eject the CD and reboot, everything will be as it was before.

Might be helpful to print this out, and have an alternative means of getting on line if you need help during the process, as you won't get on the internet while you're using GParted.

Or post me your laptop and I'll do it for you ;) I have space on my network to back the entire fucker up.

Oh wait, you don't trust me not to rifle through your stuff - quite right. Surely you have a mate with a bit of computer experience who could do this for you?

Yeah I know, it was a wtf? moment when it started doing that, I thought RP was dead years ago!

Anyway. Enough keyboard tapping and time to have a big dose of methoxetamine.

all good advice marmz and knock.

knock, my cd writer doesnt work, doesn't matter what software i use :(

and i agree about real player, that can fook right off.

I wouldn't trust any cunt who knows about pooters not to rifle through peoples, ermm, activities.....how could you not...

I haven't cleaned this laptop properly or reformatted or anything in 6 years, it must be so full of totally unnecessary shit.

I'm coming round to the idea of posting it to you actualy knock, I know you'll rifle through stuff, how could you not? But I guess you're pretty unshockable.

Would you be able to make this creaking old beast into a more competent machine? like, i think its got a 1gig processor, can things like that be changed, there's software i want to use that needs more than 1gig processor power.

And what would it cost me? (to keep you schtum)

You might not believe it but I would actually give you my word not to poke about, at least not beyond what is strictly necessary to make sure it all works. Your podgering pics are safe from me!

The job would take me an hour tops. If you covered postage that would be fine.

As for making it faster, that's a different thing. If it's a laptop, you're fairly shit out of luck getting a faster processor. A memory upgrade might be a possibility. Maybe a faster disk. Removing unnecessary software is the main thing, but the biggest hitters there are anti-virus etc and you can't run a windows machine without antivirus.

A defrag might help. You could do that yourself though - control panel / administrative tools / computer management / storage / disk defragmenter then choose each disk in turn and click Defragment. That'll make disk access a bit quicker.

PM me or, hey, hit me up on facebook while I'm drugged out of my mind to arrange something!

I get the same problem, this is worth a shot, try it

Download "fixit portable" from microwanks website and save it to an external drive, ie usb or sdhc card etc

Keep it plugged into your pc after that.

When you put a dvd in ( or whenever you want to see it again) , just go " my computer" and run it via double click

When it "scans" just cancel it and go back to my computer and hey presto your cd/dvd drive will show again each time.
Its the method I use and it never fails

Hope it works for you as well

Edit....

when you launch " fixit" just click the 2nd last one on the first page its called " fix problems with cd or dvd drive that cant read or write media"

Didn't know where else to put this, so it's going here

Found a neat little add-on for Firefox - Self-Destructing Cookies

Been using it for a few days and it seems to do an ace job. Way fewer open network connections than usual for when I've got a ton of tabs open. It's little pop up tells you how many connections and tracking cookies it's closed. I like this loads.

Mugz, I think you'll like this one

Luvvin this addon, Mz Marmz <3

No idea if it's doing owt especially exciting but am digging the way it keeps popping up telling me that a gazillion cookies have just self-destructed. Very pleasing so it is. Should come in especially handy during peev runs... or not cos I'll probably just think it's a ruse to lull me into a false sense of security whilst They are watching my every move :D

Also, it works for Ubuntu so definitely a cross-platform gibbering.

Poxy hard-drive failed didnt it. Luckily the mammy bought me a copy of the Windows 8 OEM Disk for Chrimbo - so what I'm wondering is, when I get this new hard drive on Monday - all I'll have to do is install Windows onto it and everything should be peachy, right? I'm just going to go with an external HDD - 500GB should do it, doubt I need a TB but we'll check out the prices anyway.

What does worry is that I already installed and registered it on the hard-drive that failed...so will that cause me complications in terms of entering the serial code when I go to install it again...? Could it be a case where they might charge me €70 for a new serial should the other not work since its been used already? Knowing those wankers its possible...

Anyway, any insight appreciated.

Windows 7 for Newbies

What a fuckin monster this is. First pc ive had that you cannot just plug in and use. The book states you cannot securely use it without a guide book (but then it would say that wouldnt it)

1. I got hacked, all data and software destroyed.
2. They inserted a pswd in the bios so the boot sequence couldnot be cnahged without resetting the bios..
3. i neglected to do a pswd rest disk (that didnt work) another call out charge
4, Windows decided to download 260 updates. Neither my new or old paswd didnt work after that. (accurately recorded and dated) Another call out charge
5. Mother board blew up.

Ive now bought a 1000 page fuckin tomb of a book at half price, but cant see myself doing much more than dip in here and there.

Any security essentials i should be aware of ?

Ive denied remote access functions etc, and installed a router. Purchased & activated avg pro and all windows defenders. Got everything up an running. Regularly check task manager to make sure there's no other fucker on my pc.

I think they were getting in through local network, RAS, Cheecky fuckers. Dont they just drive around slowly looking for an unsecured connection. Thats so vulnerable. Warnings should be more prominent. Well that hole is plugged now atleast. My only worry is if they've already planter another 'root kit' to start everything off all over again.

This may sound like the deranged ramblings of someone going through/ending a long pv session. I assure you it isnt.

Any ABC type tips from the several clever pc geeks I've noticed on here ?

Is it a pirate copy? I've had no problems with legit copies. I reckon a lot of people's problems with "getting hacked" is using pirate copies.

This is getting merged into Windows Technical Gibberings.

No its not a pirate. I wasnt on PV either. ;) Or Mssive doses of benzos which could feasibly cause me to delete everything myself and not recall doing so.

Fortunately i have everything backed up in triplicate. Yes that's anal. But its taken me 11 years to build up that music, auidiobook, picture and videos collection to the giant library that it is today....

Its a ball ache loading it all back on again though, as im sure you can imagine.

Sounds issues with laptop

OK basically I'm asking if there is anything I can download that can increase volume output for my speakers..

It's not an issue of it being the max my inbuilt speakers can handle as somethings will play louder than others... but when I have volume settings maxed out some things will be really quiet while others are ok..

(By some things i mean sometimes I'll be streaming movies and it'll be fine, others it will be too quiet to hear.. I understand the player (or whatever) is being used decides the max volume but surely there is a way around it?)

So... ??

What operating system are you using, so I can put this in the right thread?

Streaming movies and it's too quiet to hear? Where are you streaming movies from?

On VLC player, the volume goes up to 200%
But that will, most of the time, really mess up the sound with inbuilt compressors etc.

Best thing you can do would be to get a piece of audio-editing software and crack it up a few dB on there.
But watch out for it being too loud in places as distortion will occur.

Good luck on yer soundblasting ventures! :)

What you're talking about is called dynamic range, and it depends entirely on how the audio of the film, mp3 etc was produced and mastered. In films a lot of effort is made to maintain maximum dynamic range available, meaning quiet things are very quiet, and louder moments are a lot louder, transients are preserved and more exaggerated, because it's dramatic, but this can mean the overall perceived loudness of the soundtrack is lower.
With alot of modern music dynamic range is sacrificed to bring up the overall perceived loudness of the track, so it sounds like a wall of noise rather than having any drama.

Basically all you can do is use an amp and use the volume control a lot, or use a limiter which will make everything loud but sound like shit.
