I don't know if you're suggesting IV use at all, but as that could be read that way, I thought it was important to reiterate that codeine must never be IV'd as it's very dangerous and potentially fatal. Given that codeine needs to be metabolised before it takes effect, methods other than orally probably wont make much difference anyway. I'm interested to know if anyone has IM'd it though, and what that was like..?

Codeine can be administered orally, intrarectally and intramuscular via injection. It is NOT safe to use the product of a cold water extraction for any type of injection, and it is NOT safe to use codeine via the intravenous route due to the large histamine response it causes. IV use can lead to pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and can be potentially fatal. IV use has also been associated with seizures, hypotension⁠, hypocalcaemia and decreased cardiac efficiency⁠. Intranasal and inhalation of codeine are ineffective methods of administration as the drug needs to go through first pass metabolism to morphine before it takes effect⁠; hence it would appear that oral use is the most efficient and safe method to use codeine.⁠

Bless my mum. She was kind enough to give me a pack & a 1/2 of fortes since she was given way too many for her hip & she said "I'm sure you will put them to bad use". I chanced my arm & dropped a "so you have any spare oxys" & got a flat no. Still a freebie is a freebie & I know my mum needs her oxy until she gets her surgery so I would never pinch any.

What was scary is her Dr wanted her to take 8 fortes a day for her hip over 3 months. I told her about the para toxicity & begged her to ask for some oxy er or morphene. Thankfully she listened to me & got the correct pain relief from her Dr. Disgusting that Dr's are too scared to prescribe anything more than fortes even though this is a 64 year old woman who has never done drugs in her life. She needs a hip replacement & bone grafts but fuck it a couple of fortes will fix that right up :X

Nah, I was dreaming more along the lines of synthesizing dihydromorphinone from codeine, and how easy and terribly illegal it is. :p

Whacking codeine in any of it's forms (i.e, suspended in water after a CWE, Panadeine Forte tablets containing codeine phosphate as the only ingredient), this can lead to a variety of problems, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, hives. It is life threatening. As such it isn't even used medically because the chances of pulmonary edema are so great. Though, people have injected it and not died, notably William Burroughs shot codeine to stave off withdrawal (at least according to Junky) and reported that it was extremely unpleasant and that seems to be the general consensus from what I have read about people that have IV'd codeine. In hospital and such, it is administered via an IM injection or otherwise.

Like footsy said folks, do NOT inject codeine EVER! :!

So codiene still isnt scheduled in all places, correct? Is it still available on off-shore pharmacies? I know I can look up the laws myself, Im just doing a sub taper (from heroin addiction) and Im almost out. I hear about PAWS and I really cant deal with that, I was almost consider going back to a full-agonist and withdrawing off that, or kratom? but it seems codeine might be a smart choice, as I feel itd be easy to dose and to taper lower, as well as it not being that strong. suboxone its easier to taper lower because Im just trying to stay well, it doesnt give me any recreational effects. now, if i switched back to heroin (which I dont want to do, nor is it smart or am i endorsing that) itd be a lot harder to taper with smaller doses, as I use IV and its nearly impossible to do smaller and smaller shots, you IV for the rush in the first place. so thats why Im considering codeine now, the w/d's definitely would be less painful than subs, sadly enough.
 
Codeine available over the counter pretty much everywhere mate, AFAIK.

Yes, codeine can certainly work as a taper aid coming off a heroin habit and it is easy to taper, much more so than heroin. You have to dose twice, even three times a day, as it only lasts about 4-5 hours. But I have used it before and had a dose in the morning and gotten through the day and been able to sleep. Personally I find it easier to use codeine than buprenorphine to taper off another opiate addiction (heroin, oxycodone, morphine, etc). Also, you won't really get any recreational effects of codeine much like buprenorphine - I mean you will feel it, but beyond that not much.

^^I'm not sure if codeine is available OTC in the US like it is here. If you are still in the US, RoboRobot, I would suggest not using Australian Drug Discussion for the laws in your area ;)

Charcoal tabs will block the effects of the codeine too, man.
 
Would Iberia correct in assuming the caffeine helps counter the potential for drowsiness that the codeine provides?
 
^I thought that caffeine was added to some painkiller formulas because it is a vasodilator (increases blood flow and thus decreases the time spent waiting for the medication to start working).

I think the amount of caffeine added to each individual tablet is too low to provide much stimulation. It's only when people are taking numerous tablets, or doing CWEs that they get a load of caffeine from it.

That's been my experience too. My mother has a couple of medical conditions and over the years I have seen her being repeatedly under-prescribed pain relief. I find this strange when there are people on this board who have doctors who hand out benzos and painkillers quite freely. Maybe it's a state thing, or just a doctor thing...
 
about all this IV codeine talk; there's several european posters who were injecting massive doses of codeine and coming out unscathed, mainly just bad bouts of hives from the histamine release. it's used IV and IM predominately in the poorer countries within the region and normally as a last resort thing from what i've gathered reading posters recounts of their experiences.

there's a decent thread in ADD on the topic and poster Jasoncrest speaks about a few of his accounts along with a few other respected/well known bl posters who aren't around so much so more.

slay (from turkey i think) used to IV codeine quite often so you could search for past post's of his recalling his experience, if you're interested at all.

for all the reasons ashley points out is exactly why it is best to be avoided at all costs. if you want to IV an opioid thee are plenty of safer ones out there.

it comes down to a few factors - the doctor in question and unfortunately age discrimination plays a fair role in my bad experiences. intially a doctor is going to be very reluctant to start any patient on a course of morphine or oxycodone which makes sense to have them start out on codeine forte and work their way from thereafter exhausting all other intial avenues. in my experience having hard evidence (x-rays, mri's in particular) which can be read to give a definitive diagnosis is going to increase the need for heavier narcotics depending on the situation.

if you're mother, or anyone for that matter, isn't getting adequate pain relief they need to make it known to their doctor. they do have a right of care. and if they aren't willing to help out anymore they're more than welcome to walk out and get second or third opiions. alternatively seeing a specialist would be ideal rather than just a GP if it is a chronic ongoing problem.

i'm probably one of those people you're referring to who gets loads of morphine or oxy (my choice) alongside with valium and a very very generous codeine forte script every month for a degenerative disc disease called sponylolisis. i'm only 27 this year and have been on opioid treatment since 18-19. i'll be on and off the narcotics for my life.

i'd think poppy seed tea would be a better choice for tapering off opiates due to the fact that it lasts so damn long.around 12 hours with a good dose somtimes more :)

Is very sad to hear. When I mentioned people being handed out scripts freely, I wasn't think of people who have a condition like yourself. I was thinking of the cases I hear about sometimes where people nudge/wink their doctors to write a script and the doctor complies.
 
yeah, i realised that, mate.

i've been pretty manipulative with previous doctors to get access to higher doses, extra drugs, etc but keep things real for the most part now. i'm still planning to lower my morphine dose by the end of march. in fact my doctor and i are having a discussion about a plan to put into action on my next visit.

Panadein Extra is actually Paracetamol 500mg + 15 mg Codeine. (The strongest OTC medicine available in Australia I believe)

Panadol Extra is the normal 500mg Paracetamol + 65mg Caffeine - No Codeine at all.

Caffeine is said to be good for head-ache pain. "Caffeine is a common ingredient in many prescription and over-the-counter headache medications (see list below). Caffeine additives make pain relievers 40% more effective in treating headaches. Caffeine also helps the body absorb headache drugs more quickly, bringing faster relief. By adding caffeine and, in turn, taking less medication, you can reduce the risk for potential side effects and possible drug addiction."

Personally I take Panadein Fortes (CWE) with a cup of coffee, or fuck the caffeine of at all, although if no or little codeine available I'll have a few coffees with my Nurofen or Panadol.

I have to disagree dude, and for that exact reason. Because it lasts so long, drugs and compounds with longer duration and half-life generally result in long drawn out withdrawals. Consider methadone as an example. Also when you take PST you are ingesting a wide variety of different opiate type alkaloids so when it comes time to cease dosing, you are going to be withdrawing from all of those alkaloids and no doubt experiencing a wide variety of symptoms. I have heard that PST and PPT withdrawal can be pretty brutal - and it would be really hard to titrate your dose as not every 100g of poppy seeds share the same potency.

Just my two cents, as I have considered using PST to get off other opiates before too. :)

^ I find codeine also hits the spot much better than PST when it comes to withdrawing off heroin. It seems to match a lot better, not surprisingly I suppose...I prefer PST as maintenance for a few reasons but when WDing off smack PST never seems to fully relieve WDs, it's always there mildly in the background. Codeine is good for acute WD relief, it just doesn't last very long.
 
I used to get the pure codeine pills by telling the doc i was allergic to everything else they mix with it. Damn that stuff gives you the itches MAJORLY!!!

hmmm every persons different i guess,maybe pst would be better as a short term WD reveler.when i was going through some pretty full on smack+bupe+benzo WD's not long ago i found poppy seed tea to be a godsend!it would keep the WD's at bay much longer than codeine.maybe i wasnt going through full on WD's but i felt like fucking death!then i thought ahhhh 1 more point wouldnt hurt n i was back at the start again -_-as soon as i got some poppy seed tea into me i'd feel alot better for a good 12 hours+ but when i took codeine to combat the WD's i was lucky to feel at ease for 4-6 hours....now i have a pretty bad pst habbit using 800grams to a kilo every 2nd day minium and as you said pst WD's are brutal after just getting stable after that benzo+opiate WD for like 6-8 weeks im so worried about lowering my dose
