This is an excellent idea, jc. I'll try it!
Give it a crack... I've got a feeling that I heated a pin with a blowtorch once for some reason and that it pretty much cleaved in two but if I recall correctly it was a cheap-arsed pin which came in a posh shirt- it was very thin and I think you might well get better results with good materials. Also I guess that as a soldering-iron extension it would heat up slowly to a lower temperature, ie not white hot, then stay at constant temperature instead of going up-diddly-up-up and down-diddly-down-down very fast which could have contributed to the stress it obviously suffered. Let me know what happens, I'm intrigued.
