This is not a SWIM post. I kicked my own benzo habit cold turkey months ago, way before i even thought that there might be things that could help me. I went through hell, had a fit, fell unconcious for hours after 2 weeks of no sleep. I am not asking for myself.

A really good buddy of mine developed a benzo habit while kicking bups. He is at a pretty high dose (70mg valium daily) to feel normal. He knows what I went through and asked me for advice, and I told him - man up or shut up. I think that this is the wrong way to go about it. He can't trust himself with benzos in the house because he will abuse and not stick to a taper plan, and I was wondering, is there anything out there that can help the guy out.

Why can't he taper on a plan? He has no support system. I am his support system. 70mg of valium...I doubt he will experience anything close to what I did since my habit was over 150mg. Alcohol, not an option. I am not letting him substitute one drug for another.

Any advice?

I remember when I used to be on about 200mg daily, those were the glorious days which were burnt to misery when I quit cold turkey. Manning up doesn't always work wonders, it has its creepy subtle side effects on the sub conscious. I suggest a taper plan customized for him from the averages of the many clinical trials.
I've had positive results with Valerian, Ginkgo Biloba, Withania Somnifera. Wish him good luck.

yeah don't tell him to quit cold turkey. He's just going to have to learn the hard way like the rest of us. 70mg isn't even that bad, but anyway he'll learn some discipline when he's gone through a few benzo withdrawals and that's about the only way anyone is going to learn. IME herbs and shit will not do a fucking thing for a benzo addict. You either get tired of that life, run out or don't have enough money to get more.

if he's smart making his habit sustainable and not abusing diazepam will help him more than anything. It's too easy to end up taking 300mg/day after a few years and you do not want to be in that spot. If he can get down to 30mg/day and stay on that, then it's better than nothing.

If he is going to quit cold turkey from 70mg diazepam daily I don't think herbs is going to help at all. Maybe weed might help if he is a regular smoker like me, though going cold turkey from that dosage would cause me so much anxiety I wouldn't want to smoke even (I know cause I've been through it).

I know some guys who actually died cutting cold turkey. It's extremely dangerous to do so. I've been on benzos for 16 years now, and my daily doses are rather high but I function normally when I take them. I'm currently on 8mg of alprazolam, and 8mg of clonazapam daily. I also take diazapam on occasion if I feel a panic attack coming on....and I'll drop 20-30mg if need be.

Pending on how long one has been using or abusing benzos...it's extremely hard to kick the habit. Harder than coke, heroin, and even meth. Harder than most ANYTHING out there. Withdrawal can be a nightmare....I know because I've tried it several times. If you are not careful, you can easily kill yourself. In most cases, one usually needs to be admitted to a rehab clinic to kick it. VERY few people who attempt to do it at home have success in kicking it. I have Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome (CHVS), and my docs said I will probably be on these meds (along with others) for the rest of my life.

When I see young guys using benzos for recreational purposes....it really saddens me, especially after having lost someone close to me who died from a clonazapam and alcohol OD. IMHO, seek professional help to kick the habit....and going to a rehab clinic is your best option. Cold turkey can kill.

There are none sorry. Valerian root does something but is way too weak if you're actually addicted to benzos. Only thing you can do is slowly taper down before quitting them. Sorry mate.

Nothing you take can help your friend going cold turkey. You can die from cold turkey benzo withdrawal, your friend needs to know this. If he wants off of those benzos he is going to have do slowly taper.
