"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
New research shows smokers can expect to die much earlier than their non-smoking friends, if they aren't able to quit the addiction early in life. And women appear to be particularly vulnerable.

Lipstick can't brighten the latest research on smoking's effect on women. A new study from the American Cancer Society analyzed mortality trends among more than 2-million smokers for the past 50 years.

"The rates of deaths for both lung cancer and chronic lung disease and in fact from all causes have increased substantially in female smokers," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, with the American Cancer Society.

What's more, the research found both male and female smokers can expect to die a full decade earlier than their friends who've never smoked. Similar studies done decades earlier -- in the 60s and 70s -- didn't indicate such a huge impact on women.

According to Dr. Tim McAfee, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "it looked like the effects on women weren't as bad as in men, and that was probably because women were just starting to smoke in large numbers, and they didn't smoke as heavily."

Experts also blame so-called "light" cigarettes favored among some women -- which may have caused smokers to inhale more deeply to get their nicotine fix. "They're getting more of that smoke into their lungs, and that smoke has a bad effect," said Dr. Lichtenfeld.

Because researchers also had enough data on quit attempts, they were able to find some good news. Dr. McAfee says, "if somebody quits before the age of 40 they gain a lot of that back, they gain almost a decade of life, which is incredible."

news to me; looks like i've got at least another decade of smoking left in me then i can quit! great to hear this, now i don't have to feel so bad about it.

In my experience, most people who continue to smoke without a second thought are hardened people with hard lives, who really do not care how long they live. I question how many people a finding like this is going to convince to quit.

lol really? you ever notice how people rich as fuck smoke too? I'm pretty apathetic but i care about my health, so if i can get another 10-15 years in of smoking and quit before 40 and not really face any issues, i'm obviously going to do that. I'll probably just switch to e-cigs and never quit tho. After years of smoking it's almost fucking impossible to quit. I doubt it'll convince anyone to quit, most people either dont give a fuck or just dont even think about it. It only bothers me when i am tripping and realize that what i'm doing is not smart in the long run.

ive heard every cigarette takes 7 minutes off your life. also, ive heard laughing extends it. whenever im smoking a spliff, ill usually make a point to laugh maniacally, thus creating balance in my life.
