SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A new government survey suggests the number of people seeking emergency treatment after consuming energy drinks has doubled nationwide during the past four years, the same period in which the supercharged drink industry has surged in popularity in convenience stores, bars and on college campuses.

From 2007 to 2011, the government estimates the number of emergency room visits involving the neon-labeled beverages shot up from about 10,000 to more than 20,000. Most of those cases involved teens or young adults, according to a survey of the nation's hospitals released late last week by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The report doesn't specify which symptoms brought people to the emergency room but calls energy drink consumption a "rising public health problem" that can cause insomnia, nervousness, headache, fast heartbeat and seizures that are severe enough to require emergency care.

Several emergency physicians said they had seen a clear uptick in the number of patients suffering from irregular heartbeats, anxiety and heart attacks who said they had recently downed an energy drink.

More than half of the patients considered in the survey who wound up in the emergency room told doctors they had downed only energy drinks. In 2011, about 42 percent of the cases involved energy drinks in combination with alcohol or drugs, such as the stimulants Adderall or Ritalin.

"A lot of people don't realize the strength of these things. I had someone come in recently who had drunk three energy drinks in an hour, which is the equivalent of 15 cups of coffee," said Howard Mell, an emergency physician in the suburbs of Cleveland, who serves as a spokesman for the American College of Emergency Physicians. "Essentially he gave himself a stress test and thankfully he passed. But if he had a weak heart or suffered from coronary disease and didn't know it, this could have precipitated very bad things."

People are so stupid sometimes. just because the energy drinks are in every corner store and gas station on every street corner, it somehow is ok to chug 3-5 AT ONCE.... idiots. I took 6 200mg caffeine pills once. NEVER AGAIN. I was shaking like a someone with that disease.... where you shake a lot. Parkinsons?

With 20,000+ ER visits and what not, these aren't causing enough concerns to make a ban. Yet we get an RC that causes several deaths out of several 100,000 people using it and we immediately ban them. Makes sense!

I took 6 200mg caffeine pills once. NEVER AGAIN.

What made you think that was a smart idea? What were you trying to accomplish anyways?!

I was a young teenager with a notion that if 1 pill felt good, then so would 6.... foolish I know. I learned from that mistake no doubt about it. But some people take that much daily and then complain about their jitters and check into the hospital, i mean cmon....

Someone I went to highschool with died after drinking 3 energy drinks.. he did have pre-existing heart problems though. He was a sports player, a good student, it really shook up the community when he died...

I've had my fair share of panic attacks, and some of them have been from energy drinks. Most of the ingredients in energy drinks don't really do anything, but the ginseng and the caffeine can be overwhelming.

I know there's one type of Rockstar that has "DOUBLE THE CAFFEINE!!!", if I remember its 320mg of caffeine per can, which is like the equivalent of 3-4 cups of coffee in a single can... then factor in the ginseng in each can, and picture someone drinking 4 or 5 of those and its no wonder there's people going to the ER after drinking energy drinks

I know NOS stopped putting ginseng in their energy drinks, probably because of so many emergency room visists...

^ yeah ginseg is a great and clean stimulant but mix it with caffein or take too much of it by its own and its worse than speed for me.
if i take ginseng i take it as a light tea, not some hardcore extract with added caffein thats like bathsalts

hey just get the non energy drinks they sell in the next cooler like "bob marley chill out" or something like that, and "purple drank" crappy soda loaded with melatonin and valerian root and other "relaxing" things 7-11 speedball

Ill stick with the mdpv and adderal thanks though.

mdpv and mephedrone are the single nastiest stimulants ive ever heard of... why dont they just make d-amphetamine legal and sell it in vending machines so that young adults aren't pumping their bodies full of nasty research chems

even the amphetamine combo in adderall feels dirty.. if i remember correctly, any stimulant affecting the modulation of DA/NE is going to inadvertently be an anticholinergic in higher doses and feel gross as hell

its all fun and game until someone you know dies

I've always thought that it would be funny to one day read something like "20mg dextroamphetamine" as an ingredient on an energy drink.

It would be abused to hell though.

I never did care for energy drinks of any kind, really. I knew they couldnt be good for you lol

This is a problem, but really its more of a symptom to a larger issue. In combination with a shitty economy, many many people have it in their heads that they have to work at full capacity for 50+ hours a week. They either feel they are expected to, or they really do have to work that much to make ends meat. Its literally wage slavery. To such a sad extent that people are unwittingly addicted to legal, and potentially deadly stimulants just so they can make it through the day. In addition everyone in the US is so desensitized to the idea of consuming caffeine to be able to just perform adequately that they do not realize that caffeine can be very harmful, if not deadly in high enough doses. Ive said it before but our society is literally engineered to need caffeine to operate "normally." Just imagine how our country would look and work if caffeine was illegal. Do you guys think there would be a black market for caffeine? Or would people just almost immediately start off on higher power stimulants?

^I think there'd be no black market for caffeine per se. There'd be a very limited black market for coffee (sort of like the market for absinthe).

yeah haha, and the 20,000 ER visits from ginseng/caffeine energy drinks would probably quintuple

I could see it being more like weed. Gimmiie an 8th of brazilian dark roast. Sanka would be swag.
lol. I could see it being more like the market for Cuban cigars -- sophistos critiquing various imported blends

Yes, perfect analogy. I really don't see illegalized caffeine being sought after by the general public. It's not recreational as I see it. It is a fairly effective wakefulness aid, but there are better ones that don't give you heartburn and the shits. It's also useful for migraines, but I wonder how often caffeine withdrawal is misdiagnosed as migraine (they're so similar).

Oh and also: a double or triple espresso significantly increases my ability to run for long distances at a rapid pace.

they wouldn't ever illegalize caffeine. The coffee industry is one of the biggest legitimate industries on the planet. In the USA alone, the industry is valued at something like 19 billion a year.
It's kind of interesting to think that a large part of the economy (coffee) revolves around people getting up and being a part of that economy.

But making laws against 'energy drinks' with ridiculous amounts of caffeine in them is a different story

Most cups of coffee are said to have around 200mg. Caffeine pills(nodoze) are 200mg, on the box it says amount of caffeine is about the same as 1 cup of the leading premium coffee.

I don't drink energy drinks but I start my day with a caffeine pill and a 16 ounce coffee which I estimate to be 600-700mg caffeine. The rest of the day I drink water.

Yeah, but I found a headache medication with 40mg of caffeine per pill in it the other day, with the package saying 2 pills was the equivalent of a cup of coffee. The problem is "equivalent to a cup of coffee" isn't an accurate way of measuring caffeine. Caffeine levels between different blends vary, and depending how much coffee grounds you use the amount of caffeine will vary.

The smallest estimate I've ever heard of was 80mg per 8 oz cup, and the highest estimate I've heard of was 200mg per 8 oz cup.

Whenever I'm drinking caffeine regularly in the morning, I usually build to about 700mg in the morning too.. but 600-700mg without a caffeine tolerance is enough to give most people the jitters, bad.

Ah, the intricacies of a crappy legal stimulant.
