The What's Good on TV Thread Vs. S'all Good Man

That Storyville documentary mentioned above was indeed excellent. Focussed mainly on the problems with current drug strategy and how things got this bad historically. What impressed me most was the range of people who agree on just how fucked the system is: everyone from police to judges, doctors to dealers, parents to prison staff. Everyone except politicians basically. The extended interview with The Wire fella SHM mentions is indeed good stuff. Anyone who's seen The Wire will know that he can clearly see the problems at every level of society. As he puts it so very succinctly: "Why not just say it how it is? We're not trying to get rid of drugs. Kill the poor. That's what the real policy is. Just kill the bottom 50% of society and have done with it.". Quite. Essential viewing for all BLers.

^^ yep excellent docu shame that gov's rely on drug money so much and the prison building and filling with poor folk much the same , its just an industry.

Two thumbs up for Utopia as well - v intriguing

Ya. The private prison industry is a major problem. Perhaps even the biggest stumbling block to making real changes. As the doc points out - whole communities rely entirely on keeping prisons full and profitable the way things are. A "meat-grinder" as one of the interviewees puts it. So true.

Aye, that's why it will never change. Too much money to be lost.

Great documentary though. Yer man from The Wire speaks a whole lot of sense.

At least we haven't gone too far down the private prison road in this country yet. Nothing like the problem it is over yonder ponder. Is the one obstacle in the way of moving toward a more sane set-up that even a legalisation optimist like me struggles to find a way around. All I can think of is that the problems in the big cities will need to force the hand a bit and basically just override the more rural communities where the private prisons are the only real employer. Somewhat Thatcherite (in reverse maybe) option admittedly. Just take the jobs out from under 'em and leave the locals to sink or swim and find more gainful employment somehow. Prison policies and populations in America are just insane 8o

They're never going to implement policies that help unemployed black people at the expense of employed white people. Never. No matter what happens.

It was really worrying to see the reasons why certain drugs became illegal. Make smoking opium ilegal because that's what the Chinese are really into. Make smoking weed illegal because that's what the Mexicans are really into etc. I've seen documentaries on that sort of thing before but this one explained it really simply so it was obvious that it was straight up racism.

That was definitely one of the most unbias and informative drug documentaries I've seen. Really enjoyed it, didn't expect it'd be too good after watching the drugs: how they work thingy the bbc did.

Don't think it was really a BBC documentary at all. Storyville showcases documentaries from independents usually doesn't it? That one was winning awards all over the shop at festivals and stuff last year and even got a cinematic release in some places, I think. A very long way from sodding BBC3 drug "documetaries" :|

If anyone has never seen Carl Sagans Cosmos series, check it out

The series, which originally aired in 1980 on PBS is a classic
Sagan lucidly explains such topics as Einstein’s theory of relativity, Darwin’s theory of evolution, and the greenhouse effect, bringing the mysteries of the universe down to a layman’s level of understanding.

Yup. Waiting on the concluding episodes of the latest series. Quality show <3

In other TV series news, was recommended summat earlier that sounds good: Romanzo Criminale. Sounds very much like a cross between The Godfather and The Wire going by what I was told. Got the series downloading acquiring at the moment. Still looking for the preceding film of the same name though.

Got a pretty hefty list of stuff waiting on watching meself, PTCH. There's only two series of this one (plus the film which recently appeared as if by magic) and they're relatively short so not too much of an investment in time to get through.

Just finished watching... Funny Business: Gags to Riches. Really rather interesting insight into the grubbier side of the comedy circuit (ie advertising, corporate gigs, training films, etc). Of particular interest was the payments due per comedian... £25000 gets you Ricky Gervais (fair enough - he's an international comedy god at the moment,) £40000 gets you Michael McIntrye (there is no god :|). Although, to be fair, I didn't realise the latter slogged his guts out giving freebies across the land for a decade before his first TV performance... but still... 8(

Some classic old ads from when they were almost good and some glimpses of the training vids that you'd never know some of these cunts did for cash unless you were in that particular industry. Plus, Mark Thomas. Not seen him on TV for years but he speaks the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth as ever <3
