Nurses Fired for Refusing Flu Shot

I get free flu shots and always get them.

Personally, I think while you have a right to refuse, you don't have a right to be a nurse working with sick people AND refuse.

If there's a genuine medical reason to believe it would be unsafe for any particular nurse to get the shot, then that's fine, but otherwise, I think she should have to have the shot if they want to work in this field.

For the hospital to be able to sack her it was clearly in her contract/terms of employment which she signed, so legally she does not have a leg to stand on.

The flu vaccination is alot easier on the body than the virus itself hence why people are given vaccinations, plus she is at a high risk of getting infected by flu even if she shows no sympotms she would still pass it on to other patients who have a very weak immune system.
This is going to sound very small minded but religion has no place in medical decisions as when the bible was written medical science was rather basic and rudimentary.

It seems like one sort of signs into the medical industry if they're a nurse and/or doctor. Might as well reap what you sow.

So, even a 1% increase in prevention - and at the risk of compromising the immune system - makes it worth it to give up our rights to control what we put in our bodies?
Sounds pretty extremist to me.
The individual might get some other disease due to a compromised immune system, and is essentially just as likely to get the flu.
I don't see the benefit here.
But you would see this as sufficient benefit to warrant the enforced immunization of the general public? Health care workers?
Doesn't make sense to me.

Giving up basic human rights for minuscule gains in flu prevention - or, some years, no gains at all - and with an accompanying risk of harming the individual is something I will fight against with every bit of strength I can muster.

Of course if the positives don't outway the negatives then it should be optional, but I don't know enough about this, nor do I feel majority of people on BL to be able to say whether or not this is the case. "The hospital said in a statement that it implemented the mandate to promote patient safety based on recommendations from the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention". IMO, if such orgs who make policy's like this, feel that it is the right choice to help protect patients than if you are a health care worker you should follow the rules that are implemented.

I also made it clear for the general public I don't feel it should be required. I used to get the flu shot every year until I was 20, but stopped since then. I don't plan on getting the flu shot in the future either, but I'm not a health care worker.

edit; just to add, if these issues like compromising the immune system are significant enough where they can cause more problems for both the health care worker and the patients in the health care system, than they help prevent, I whole heartily agree with having it be optional. I just don't know whether or not the benefits that the vaccines have are scientifically large enough to warrant its use to protect the individuals the health care worker are in contact with, as well as themselves. So I shouldn't be the one to make the decision/I can't honestly give a reasonable argument with what I know to say whether or not the rule is a logical and reasonable one to have implemented. Like I said earlier, I don't think that many individuals here can either.

Of course protecting the rights of individuals is important, but with the world that humans have created for themselves their are certain things that (sadly, as I don't like the way humans have evolved in this world) everyone has to sacrifice or follow to benefit themselves and everyone else. When an individual completely decides to live with only its own needs and desires driving them, others get hurt in the process and often to a point that something needs to be done.

We are living in to big and small of a world for peoples actions to affect only themselves or such an signification few.

I have never heard of this vaccine but i would get it if they offered it to me....

CNN has an article on the flu and vaccine.

(CNN) -- An early and severe start to the flu season has many health experts concerned. On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 47 states are experiencing widespread activity, although it appears to be decreasing in some areas.
According to the CDC, this is the most flu cases they've seen at this time of year in more than a decade. Twenty pediatric flu-related deaths have occurred since the start of the season. The CDC does not track adult flu-related deaths.
The peak of the season, which usually happens in February, may be yet to come for most states -- officials said Friday it may be a week or two before it becomes clear whether cases have peaked. Here are some common flu questions from readers answered:

I think people here are missing the point about vaccines. Vaccine programs are a premeditated globalist eugenics operation designed to implant the population with cancer viruses. They have been known to reduce fertility and even cause outright sterilization. One of the top co-developers of one of the vaccines that works for Merck did an interview in Boston for PBS where he admitted they had found these viruses in vaccines. These vaccines are what is responsible for breast cancer rates tripling in the last decade. These vaccines are why most other cancer rates have doubled in the last decade.

And this is why the fact they fired these poor nurses is offensive. You can find more info about this at infowars by the way.

I'm glad not to have tits, nor a desire to reproduce then.

According to this source, some vaccines Bayer produced were tainted with HIV.

However I'm sure I'll still test negative as I always have.

She worked in the critical care unit FFS !!!!

If I ever found out that a loved one of mine (God forbid) was being treated in critical care by ANY MEMBER OF HOSPITAL STAFF and they had refused to take flu vaccine then lets just say me going mental would be a bit of an under statement.

The sick patients health are the priority not the bloody nurses' jobs after they had refused flu vaccine.

She refused it, damn right she should have been fired for so many reasons that I could not be bothered to go into on a nice Sunday afternoon.

I'm really not sure I follow how infecting people with viruses and giving them cancer makes sense as a eugenics operation.

a simple flu shot is not going to do the trick.

The point is about reducing risk of infection and thus avoid spreading it to those who are at serious risk, namely those in critical care. Why do you think hospitals ask visitors to stay away when there are outbreaks of norovirus and winter flu? Well, it's pretty simple, nurses and doctors have to come to work to take care of sick patients, visitors can stay away, so if there is a small chance that the flu vaccine will help prevent the spread of the virus then it should be company policy. I know there is no vaccine for norovirus.

Those most at risk of developing complications and dying from flu are those most vulnerable when already in hospital. They need as much help as they can get while trying to recover in hospital. A nurse or doctor simply refusing a flu vaccine for the sake of it without a substantial medical grounds just doesn't cut it with me.

Its a world gone mad!

2,140 cases in the United States per year, very rare indeed. There's probably at least 150 million men in the United States any given year.

The people we're talking about are female nurses I believe. But in males my fear is that if it's not breast cancer it could very well end up being just be some other form of cancer I dare say.

I'm really not sure I follow how infecting people with viruses and giving them cancer makes sense as a eugenics operation.

Because if you're stupid enough to take the vaccine then you deserve to die in their mind. It's a bit of a red herring so if it's easier just assume it's not true because it's not the most important point I was trying to make.

OK, first off, being vaccinated does not mean you will not pass the flu onto someone. It only means you have a better than average chance of not being sick the coming flu season. If you touch a door handle that has the flu virus on its surface, then you come in contact with someone before washing/sanitizing your hands you will pass the flu virus onto that unsuspecting person. I personally have had the flu shot 3 times my entire life. The first one was given to me free of charge from my employer Jetta Products in October/November 1994. I did not get sick that season. The other times I had been vaccinated I became ill. I actually had bad flu sicknesses both times. Much worse than when I hadn't been vaccinated. The nurse in question was in her 22nd year at the hospital? How much longer before full retirement with benefits? Perhaps that was an easy way out so as not to pay later when she gets to retire. Who knows for sure why she was fired. HR would know, but I bet they did not wish to respond. No matter the outcome I bet you there is a lawyer somewhere right now trying to get in contact with the nurse. He wants to turn her wreck, into a check!
I don't think she should have been fired unless all 1300 others were fired as well. That's my 2 cents, but mostly they aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

fair enough point re passing on the virus even if vaccinated.
I do think however, she could have been moved to another area where she would not jeoperdise the health of those in critical care, but then I suppose where do you stop? Everyone would want to be moved if they refused the jab!!
And if there is a lawyer out there looking for her, I guess it's probably cheaper to pay her off now than paying salaries for her and her buddies up until retirement. I'm not sure what the details were for the others.
And unfortunately yes, they may have wanted to send out a very very strong message to the rest of the staff and beyond!

The devastating flu outbreak in the US could be on its way here - Aus

20 children have died from flu in the US
Influenza strains travel the globe
Australia should consider US season a "forewarning"

A KILLER flu that's sweeping the US could end up Down Under.

The influenza season has hit early and hard in the United States.

Twenty children have died from the H2N3 virus that has swept across most of the country, there are vaccine shortages, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency.

There have already been five times as many cases reported in New York as there were in the entire flu season last year, and it's not clear if the season has yet peaked.

Golden Globe winner Hugh Jackman is among those hit, and he said he was still battling the strain that had "swept the entire west coast" of the US.

The Australian Medical Association said the overseas experience was a "forewarning" for Australia.

"Last time the flu season peaked early (in the US) there were 50,000 deaths," he said.

"We do tend to parallel the Northern Hemisphere in the south so it's a forewarning that we need to get in early and vaccinate this year. "

Dr Hambleton said the flu would still come in our winter, but that widespread vaccination would protect the vulnerable and reduce the effects in the healthy.

Vaccinations are tailored each year to match the expected strains that develop, mutate, and travel around the world.

The virulent Influenza A strain is the most common, but Influenza B and the H1N1 swine flu are still active.

Influenza Specialist Group chairman, virologist Dr Alan Hampson said they can never be sure what the upcoming flu season will hold but that the situation in the US "does tend to alert us to the fact we may well suffer something similar"

and that experts were "watching with interest".

"We really can't predict what's going to happen. It's best to anticipate it could be a bad season particularly for those prone to bad outcomes if they do contract influenza," he said.

"We will soon be heading into the vaccination time. From what I understand from colleagues overseas the vaccine we'll have should be a very good match for the strains circulating in other parts of the world."

Dr Hampson said there were also outbreaks in Hong Kong, and that south-east Asian influenzas often flowed in to Australia.

The specially formulated vaccine will be available in March and will protect against Influenza A (H2N3), Influenza B, and swine flu.

Tens of thousands of Australians get the flu each year, many are hospitalised and some die. The most vulnerable are older people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, pregnant women and anyone with an underlying health problem
