make it yourself you lazy fucker :) actually no, you did a nice dinner she can do pud. Thats fair. Tell her my top tips :)

She loves cooking and baking as much as i love being a lazy fucker. Perfect match. I'll advise her of your top tips. Will report back if she gets round to it. Need to get cocoa powder first.

Two questions, one is a gardening one, one is a food one.

i) how long do you reckon smoked salmon can stay open but wrapped in a plastic bag in the fridge?

ii) how can I encourage plant rhizomes to grow faster (I'm propagating them by division)? My guess is a low nitrogen high potassium fertilizer but all input welcome.

Does it smell right? Use your nose, it will tell you.

and what he said.

i) Ok, thanks both of you. I'm really not sure. I mean, it smells fishy, but smoked salmon does. I don't really want to get the squits. I am looking on the rest of the internet for a change. Actually, it says use by the 1st and it's been open since about the 29th, looks nice although I feel I should probably bin it.

ii) Excellent, they're on a radiator. The shoots aren't as green as they could be and they are in a sandy soil so I am toying with adding a bit of high P NPK organic fertiliser which I happen to have lying around.

edit: mumsnet says it'll be fine so I'll post them my shit if it all goes tits up, but I'll cook it in scrambled egg to be sure first.

i really dont think you need the ferts yet, if you insist on it, use at a quarter strength, or less even....Personally i'd just keep it warm and damp/moist.

and the smoked salmon i wouldn't eat if its been open this long...

cook it, in scrambled eggs.

The rhizomes are quite well established though, some have 6 inch shoots! What I'm doing is letting them grow to a certain size then slicing them in half so hopefully by summer I'll have enough for a bed.

I'll see what they think over on mumsnet.

cool, yeah, get feeding if they're shooting.

Girlfriend made a really nice curry with chickpeas, tomatoes, some leftover root vegetables. Had it with some mini naans, lovely :)

what plants jancrow?

I'm not actually sure! They were growing somewhere I visited about eight months ago and there was an enormous bed of them. Someone told me what they were and pulled one up to show me the rhizome and just plonked it on the ground afterwards but I picked it up and put it in my pencil tin with the root wrapped in wet tissue to see if I could get it to grow and spread at home. It has broad grassy blades and I think it's meant to put out clusters of orange bell-like flowers at some point but I haven't seen it do that... any ideas?

I reckon I will... potassium's the rooty one innit? Nitrogen inhibits root growth iirc innit.

Back on topic: I chewed a bit of salmon, thought it was ok, just as I swallowed it I detected something I didn't like so had scrambled eggs on toast without salmon. I've just had a really quite urgent and unpleasant bowel movement. I didn't think anything could go through you that fast but I have a very rapid metabolism which might have played a part. Or my lunch was dodgy too and I've got a double dose lined up. 8(

Er, yeah, food. Yummy yummy food.

Sounds like crocosmia, I like them. Comes in red, yellow & orange. You cut the foliage down to ground level in Autumn.

Crocosmia and Dierama
Divide Crocosmia and Dierama in spring
To remove the corms without damage, dig down 30cm (1ft) to avoid and gently lift
The roots of both perennials form ‘chains’ of corms, which can be replanted intact or individually separated. There is evidence that maintaining the ‘chains’ intact may be the better option
Discard wizened or diseased corms and trim old leaves
Replant sections at their original depth
Some crocosmias, such as Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ and C. × crocosmiiflora ‘Jackanapes’, produce underground stems (stolons) which can be detached, along with fibrous roots, to produce new plants. However, it is worth noting that crocosmias flower profusely when crowded, so do not divide clumps too often – every two or three years should be enough.

If thats the case they're stolons not rhizomes, but propegation ain't really my thing.

Woo HA - - that could WELL be right, you gem, cheers. Mine are looking very similar to the undeveloped ones at the base of the 'proper flower' in that pic, they don't hint that they could grow into something that large or spectacular but if they did I'd be pretty chuffed.... maybe they'll need a few seasons to get properly established and complete the cycle.

Do you reckon a high (ish) potassium feed would encourage the rhizomes to develop a bit faster? They're definitely happy on the radiator judging by the speed at which they're shooting but I'd like more shoots and for that I need more rhizomes to divide and replant. Thanks!

Its the time of year, they die back and those tiny little shoots start to reappear round about now, but by summer each small shoot will be about 15in high. Yours will grow that high and may even flower, just the clump wont be very dense. I plant them in clumps of five to start. Give it a few years and each clump gets bigger and bigger and will eventually join up - they do make nice ground cover - how big is the bed you want to fill, and how many baby clumps do you have just now? Just saw you ressurected the gardening thread, sorry for being off topic.

Lazier gardeners would just buy a pot of about 5 shoots for about a fiver but theres no reason why with a bit of patience and dedication you cant fill that whole bed for free :)

I fucking LOVE crocosmia, one of my favourite flowers. They spread like wildfire.

Had some near scarlet ones once, stunning.

Make great cut flowers too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Ofc when we are hungry we get dopamine rush, and when we are full serotonin is released. So yeah, we love drugs!

This is not the first incarnation of this thread either - there are thousands of posts in the archives about what we love to eat :D

We're pretty social in EADD. Over half the threads are usually non-druggy :)

English muffin with a fried egg and coffee.

I was coming to the end of my GBL supply so starved for the morning and threw on one of those tin currys and a portion of pasta, finished my GBL and munched! It was actually a slightly classier brand of curry (I believe it even had the authentic 'tikka masala' name in there somewhere)

Two slices of hot buttered toast wiv Brussels Pate. Must remember to buy pate more often. I've tried but just can't bring meself to munch meat paste anymore. Was a big fan as a nipper but once the phrase "mechanically reclaimed meat product" truly sinks in the appeal slowly wore off. I have no doubt that the meat in pate is equally rancid but is usually mostly offal which is probably cheap enough they don't need to pressure hose it off the carcass. Does seem to be rather limited in terms of variety of pate (certainly my local shops anyway) but maybe that's primarily cos no cunt buys the stuff.
