Due to my Grandfather passing away, I've developed quite the insomnia. He gave me Trazodone, Doxepin, Xanax 1mg and klonopin 1mg. Xanax seems to work best for me. I took 1mg about 3 hours ago, but am now awake again. Would I be okay to take another one?
Thanks so much!

Yea, you will be fine to take another one. You should try to use them as sparingly as possibly though, since dependence to benzodiazepines is something that you want to avoid.

^Agree with Tommyboy

I have a boatload of xanax, enough that if I used them regularly I would have quite a dependence. I get some hard to handle nightmares when I take xanax, either the same night or a couple days later. That's been enough to keep me at bay with this drug. In general, if the side effects are worse than the reason I'm taking the drug in the first place, I try to put it down.

Some rules I carry for xanax are never use more than 1mg, never dose on consecutive days, and max dose twice a week or 7 times in a month. I haven't suffered W/D from xanax. Atleast I don't remember any W/D. Maybe my nightmares WERE the W/D? I don't get them much now but when I do the first question I ask is, when was the last time I took some xanax?

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather, man.

I don't find xanax too hypnotic but if it works for you go for it. You might want longer acting hypnotic benzo if you keep waking up after couple hours.

Try not to use benzos as sleeping pills. There are way safer routes to go down (I use melatonin, works fine for me). Benzo addiction develops very quickly and is absolutely horrendous.

Besides, Xanax wasn't created to be an hypnotic. Its half life is too short. Yes, there is an hypnotic benzo with a half life of 3 hours (I won't name it), but it is illegal in a lot of countries and when it is legal, it isn't used at all or very seldom.

Mm, it's an advantage for a hypnotic benzo to have a relatively short half life because it's meant for initiating sleep. The meds that keep you asleep such as nitrazepam are different, though they are hypnotic too but the hypnotic effect usually wears off really quickly regardless of half-life.

be safe dude. i was in detox with a kiud who had a close cousin that died and the kid never did drugs before that.

well he got prescribed xanax and within 6 months he was addicted eating up to 12 bars a day, if not more and had 2 xanax related duis, was in jail, etc

If it helps you threw a difficult time you do it! Short term it will not hurt you just dont make it a regular occurence.People can have there say about it being banned in this country or that .I myself fail to see the relavence but there you go.To help help you threw a transition on a very short term babis should be fine.Sorry to hear about your loss! :-) Xxxx

helping you through a transition is how it starts.. for numerous people. regular people that in no way before had a substance abuse problem can become full blown addicts within months such as the example i provided. not saying its not good for short term anxiety because it is but if your using it to cope with a problem then your gonna keep using as more problems pop up. i myself would never want to be prescribed it cuz i already know how addictive my personality is without it but then again everyone in the world isnt like me, i know.

just be careful.. youve been warned.

Benzo tolerance increases dramatically over a short period of time, and subsequently it will lose its efficacy. Personally, I don't really sleep on benzos, and when I do, I don't feel particularly well rested. I would suggest maybe trying an OTC sleep aid (one without acetaminophen or other pain relievers that take a toll on your liver). I am sorry about your situation!

Hey OP,

Sorry for your loss - have you tried melatonin in combination with xanax? I've found that taking a good dose of melatonin (10mg+) with xanax (or in fact any benzodiaziapine) keeps you asleep after you've passed out. Either way, go easy on the benzos and only use them when you absolutely have to - the only thing worse then insomnia is benzo withdrawal.
